I think you are exactly describing tarptent dipole 2. It has little (8"?) end struts that provide extra usable room. It pitches in a tighter area than the durston. Take a look. I have two tarp tents, one is the dipole 1 Li. The Li is the dcf version, which will break your budget, the non-li is sil-poly (I think).
I'm 6'4", about 220lbs. First question is about your budget. I have two TarpTent tents, the Dipole 1 Li and the Protrail. Tarptents are particularly good for tall people. They have end struts (short poles) that lift the ends up and make much more livable space. The dipole is the analogous one to the XMid. I love the diple, ton of room, moderately light, easy to set up, small footprint (the XMid has an infamously large footprint). Point of information. No matter what your question is about tents, Reddit will suggest a Durston. They make good tents.
I'm 6'4", about 220. I have the dipole 1 Li and there is plenty of room. I would think the 2 would be great for you. I believe, the not-Li version has the same specs just a bit heavier and cheaper.
I'm only 6'4", I have a dipole 1, I have probably 8" of extra space , you should be fine. Tarptent has these little poles at the ends of the tent which makes the space much more usable than many tents. Tarptents are trecking pole tents that are single wall. They are lighter than free-standing tents. I paid extra for the 'ultralight' version, but they have a normal/sil-poly version that is more affordable. I love my tent, but you have to decide if you want a single wall tent or not.
Many Tarptents have end struts (little poles that are ~2' tall) that go on the ends of the tent creating a lot more usable space. I'm 6'4, and wear size 13 shoe and fit in my dipole 1 Li with headroom to spare. I think the non-Li version is the same size. The dipole is a very similar tent to the durston, but I think it's a little heavier. I love my dipole. I also have an old version of the Protrail. It's a bit lighter, but not as roomy.
I think more comparable dipole li and x-mid, not Aeon. And for my opinion Dipole 1 Li is The King of the single wall non freestanding tent. It’s not a lightest option, but you will have a lot of comfortable things.
The Rainbow and Double Rainbow (maybe way too big) from Tarptent can be set up in basically free standing mode using trekking poles. I wouldn’t really trust the single Rainbow in higher winds though. I personally am going to be getting the Dipole 1 Li with the nylon floor next from Tarptent.
I’m rocking dipole and love it.
This is inaccurate. Ultralight does not mean making these sacrifices. There are well designed and poorly designed ultralight tents, though there are fewer and fewer poorly designed products given how few customers there are and the amount of research a typical consumer does. Modern fabrics have absurd strength for their weight. Modern ultralight tents can be as feature rich, weather resistant, well ventilated and roomy as a heavier tent. Compare the Xdome and Tarptent dipole with a heavier tent; there is no trade off other than cost (and in the case of the xdome, even that isn’t true).
same as below treeline. there is no such thing as a bad 3 season tent anymore at a budget of 200$+, unless you buy a festival garbage. it's more about the site selection. if you pitch any tent in front of a morning cold air niagara from the 1.5km high pass, it's not going to be comfortable night. But just hide behind a boulder or ground incline and it's fine. i wouldn't go for a pyramid though. it doesn't justify a footprint compared to alternative designs like Dipole, that have all the floor space, but hacked away unusable low-angle parts.
Tarptent all the way - has kept me dry and cozy for thuousands of kilometers in snow, rain and heat. I have never owned a better ultralight tent. Bonus: you buy from a small, independent company, founded and owned by a great guy - when I bought my first one (years back) he answered all my questions personally… What a legend!
