Fair enough! If you can find a second hand Terra Nova Pioneer Compact 2 on eBay, they're about £300 and really great tbh.
Hydrostatic head of 3000mm for the fly sheet and 5000mm for the ground sheet is plenty enough for what the UK weather can hurl down from spring to autumn. Denier of 50D is very good level of tear resisitance to have agianst thorns, sharp stones or a clumsy 10yo. Get a tent that both free standing and pitches as all-in-one (outer and inner together) so it's probably going to be a dome tent. This'll make pitching up and tearing down very simple and quick. Get one with two entrances at either end so no one ends up crawling over the other whilst going out to do their ablutions with nature in the middle of the night. Make sure the tent is genuinely sized as a 2 person tent, a lot of them claim to be, but in reality are 1 person + a small dog. And be carefull of Chinese branded tents as some have dimesions that are too small for taller Europeans (6 foot or more).. With that I'd recommend the Terra Nova's Helm 2 Compact tent. It's well within your budget and weight allowance and ticks all of the criterias I've mentioned above along with decent sized vestibules, large storage pockets and a ceiling loop to hang a lantern or what not. I own this exact tent and with myself (M 6'2") and partner (F 5'0") inside it'is a very spacious 2 person tent that's gone on plenty of thru-hiking and motocamping trips with us. It's been a fantastic all rounder of a 3 season tent. Plus Terra Nova's customer service has been legendary (even when living in Norway) and I think they still offer their trade-in service too.
Durston X-Mid 2 ticks most boxes, dual vestibules, fly to ground, strong in wind/rain, light. Tarptent Stratospire 2 is weather proof with real vestibules but heavier. Terra Nova Pioneer 2 is solid and lighter than your current tent. Naturehike or 3F are okay if you accept durability tradeoffs. For wet and wind, structure beats ultralight every time.
Terra nova is a good choice. they do a trade in deal to. Send them any tent in working order and they will give you a discount. It's kind of hidden on there site. But it is there
90% of people here will advise against fires like this (10% will think we are killjoys). While wild camping (not the same as camping anywhere) is allowed in Scotland you’ll find that fires are not permitted or are discouraged. peat can burn underground for many miles for extended periods (years). If you are going to do this please please do it on a platform, maybe on rock. Personally i would ask you not to but if yoi do… Winter tents in Scotland? I wouldn’t use less than a hilleberg or terra nova but that’s out of your budget. I’m a big fan of my quasar which is genuinely roomy enough for two (usually ‘2 person’ involves thin small people). If you stump up cash for one of those (eg Soulo) you will get possibly a lifetimes’ use out of them. Others will be able to speak to particular models. Ps if you do decide to do a fire you will at best be hot in front and still freezing on your back so don’t think it will ‘keep you warm’ lol
