"Last month got rear ended by person on the phone. ... I downloaded the event clip from the mobile app and was able to show the video to the police on the spot. ... The other driver got a ticket for using the phone."
"But both work great and I would 100% get front and rear."
"It records front and back."

"I’m not a car guy and I installed it all myself; was pretty easy."

"I bought my Blackvue 750 in 2019. It failed after about three years and they fixed it for about $100.00. it still seems to be doing fine. I live in Arizona and while I use a garage and don't have to park in the sun all the time, it still gets really hot in the car."

"The app. It's a complete pain in the ass to view any footage ... it won't update the firmware because the dashcam connects to my phone via wifi and if it's connected via wifi, there's not any actual Internet access from the cellular signal so it can never update 🤣 what a joke."

FYI - Teslas have built-in dash/sentry, just make sure to plug in a large enough thumb drive or SSD (recommended). But just be warned that sometimes its not fully reliable. I saved a clip manually and it literally cut off the event I was trying to capture. But for most people, its good enough. I personally have the Blackvue 750s installed prior to when dash/sentry came out, so I left it in
I’ve been using Blackvue for a while now, and for me the DR750S-2CH checks all the boxes.
I've spent some time checking out various models, and the Blackvue DR750S-2CH really stands out for me.
Seconding Blackvue. Mine is the DR750S 2ch 1080p front (60fps) and rear (30fps). I've had it for about 6yrs now and does the job well. I've got one of the magic battery things that cut it off when your car battery drops below a certain threshold so it can do the parking sensors for a short time. Got it on a huge fathers day sale discount, like 40% off cameras and card, plus 10% off the installation. The fancy SD card was basically the same price as the camera, but I went for the biggest one and I can use the same card if I upgrade in the same ecosystem. The newer models have built-in lte models for live GPS tracking instead of external modems, and some have the better 4k picture at least on the front. The good: - clear picture most of the time. Reasonable at night as well. If the car is further away at night you might struggle to read the plate a bit. - good sensors, it tracks everything and will mark events if it senses impact or hard acceleration/braking, and you can set the alert thresholds. If you're lte or modem connected it can automatically upload "events" to Blackvue cloud (and it can use your phones hotspot if you didn't buy the modem) - direct wifi connection from camera to a phone to grab videos. It's old gen wifi so slower but it works, and then you don't have to connect through the internet when you're sitting in front of it - Web interface and app is reasonably well designed, it knows you're there to connect to the camera and watch video and that's what it does The downsides: - you do have to pay for a subscription for live viewing (not live GPS) or to send live audio from the Web to the camera, but I've never used that. You get a certain amount of cloud storage on the free tier before it cycles videos. But it does mean you're locked into their cloud. I have seen a guy use a python script on his home wifi to hackily transfer the recording to his home nvr when parked though. - because the videos are cut into 1minute chunks it can be a bit tedious to download a 10-20min block on the phone app - it doesn't like it when it gets really hot (it Struggles in the Aussie Summer a little until the aircon cools it off a bit, but we're talking extreme temps and I think this is pretty expected) -when you update firmware it wipes the card, including any recordings, so you have to save them first My budget was based on what I had set as my insurance excess - if it saves me from paying the excess once it's paid for itself. And I've grabbed clips for friends too - one of them had their mirrors vandalised in a carpark (drivers side mirror found 5m or so away) and we were able to see what happened.
Just picked up the Elite 8 and it’s been ok so far, not the clearest image and I felt my DR750S-2CH front camera was clearer at reading license plates. So far I’d recommend and take advantage of hardwiring for the low current parking mode which I haven’t completed yet.
I've been using BlackVue for a while now, and my go-to model has been the DR750S-2CH.

I really like my BlackVue. I have an older 750 and a newer 950, not sure what models they have now. I don't mess with the cloud storage or the batteries, I run off the car battery. They record 24/7 to the front and I added my own storage, were easy enough to install myself if you know how to watch some youtube.
Eventually the capacitors and RTC battery will fail. Blackvue and Thinkware tend to see that start occurring after the 5 year mark. The camera will often still run, but will shutdown immediately losing the current video segment. I have a pair of old Blackvue 750s still going strong, but their days are numbered. There's a fair number of things to go wrong with dash cams. Garmin consumer cams rarely make it beyond two years, with capacitors rarely being the cause.
I have a Blackvue front/rear. Solid units and they stand up to the nasty summer heat here.
