Bro, I had a high end dash cam for 5 years with the same high endurance sd card and had no issues. Just recently upgraded to a newer model. Still no issues. Also, good dash cams will alert you if you have a failing sd card. I personally use BlackVue. They’re not cheap but worth every penny. Just upgraded from the 750x 2ch 1080p to the elite 9 2ch 4k front 2k rear. Get good sd cards and stay away from cheap amazon offers and you’ll be fine.
Also, if you do this frequently, I recommend a body cam just in case you ever have a self defense incident. It will cover your ass. I personally just use a go pro with a chest strap. No self defense issues in 3 years of flex, but definitely caught some things on camera that people probably wouldn’t believe without the footage.
My DR750X has worked fine for over 5yrs and I live in Cairns, Queensland Australia which gets really hot. And I don’t know what you mean about limiting stuff behind a subscription. I don’t have a subscription and I went through my recording/SD card the other day with no issues or limitations
They're easy to install, follow any YouTube video and you'll get it right.
I've had the blackvue 750x which I found to have low video quality and ability to capture license plates and details. My vantrue n4 pro blows it out the park in all those qualities and more.
I would definitely look at video comparisons between multiple, would not cheap out on a dashcam but there is no need to spend outrageous amounts. I found vantrue to have very affordable and good line ups and recommend them.
Eventually the capacitors and RTC battery will fail. Blackvue and Thinkware tend to see that start occurring after the 5 year mark. The camera will often still run, but will shutdown immediately losing the current video segment.
I have a pair of old Blackvue 750s still going strong, but their days are numbered.
There's a fair number of things to go wrong with dash cams. Garmin consumer cams rarely make it beyond two years, with capacitors rarely being the cause.
I have a 2019 Forester Sport and installed a BlackVue front and rear camera setup. The front camera fits nicely just in front of the rearview mirror, and I was able to route the wiring through the same cover/chase used for the mirror wiring. It’s a little tight, but definitely doable.
All of the wiring is hidden behind the windshield trim and headliner on the way to the rear camera. Just be mindful of the side curtain airbags when routing cables. A plastic trim removal tool kit is worth having for the job.
The most challenging part was fishing the rear camera cable through the rubber wiring boot into the rear hatch, but once that was done everything went together pretty smoothly.
I’ve had the setup installed since 2020 and it’s been very reliable. The only issue I’ve had was the original SD card failing. I replaced it with a BlackVue-branded SD card in 2021, and it’s still working perfectly.
I’ve actually needed the footage several times. Most recently, it helped document a semi backing into my wife’s Outback last October while I was stopped directly behind her.
