Cycliq fly 6 & 12 is what I have. I also started with GoPro. What I concluded is that GoPro is good for short, vivid, action shots but battery life will disappoint for your use case. On the Cycliq, you need a high resolution to get a tag, which shortens the memory and battery life. I loop the video to ensure I get the more recent video.
I’m mixed on cycliq. The one time I had an incident and needed footage, the impact caused the fly 12 camera to malfunction and I was just missing 14 seconds of video. I also had 2 rear fly 6 cameras die after rides in not much rain (wet roads, but not pouring). Customer support wasn’t great. That said I’ve had a front cam, that aside from the lost 14 seconds, has worked well with good battery life for almost 5 years now. The app could be better (if alarm goes off and you have low battery, you can’t turn off the alarm) and it’s overall pricy. Not sure if I’ll get another though.
I’ve had a rear Cycliq camera for about 6 or 7 years now and never had an issue with it. The image quality is great and the battery life is better than a GoPro or 360. Aside from that I believe Garmin makes a radar/camera that is well reviewed. I would chose the Garmin or Cycliq over a GoPro or 360.
Cycliq front light/camera mounted to handlebars - has lasted four years, buttons failed within a year but duct tape has kept water at bay. White label Technologic light/camera on rear seat post. Had a Cycliq but it couldn’t cope with any moisture let alone the Singaporean monsoon and finally died just out of warranty. Rear camera gets grubby with dirty roads so becomes pretty useless in bad conditions. Have used it successfully as hit and run evidence.
I have the front (Fly 12) and rear (Fly 6) Cycliq cameras. They have a nice Black Friday deal right now as a bundle. There is ambient audio. I've been known to call out tag numbers from close passes so there is no doubt. I live in GA and we don't have front plates and people ask why I have the rear camera and it helps show that a car didn't move over at all when passing. I have friends who have the Garmin Varia radar and they count on the couple of us who have rear cameras if they need footage.
Cycliq.com is also an option out of Australia. They have front (fly12) and rear (fly6) specific cameras. I have both and really like the fly12, the fly6 has some questionable design choices. Both have 7 hours of battery life in camera-only mode. The resolution is plenty good enough to read license plates. The fly12 co-exists with my Garmin 1030 in the front and the fly6 co-exists with my Varia radar in the back using a mount I designed and 3d printed. I think they are a bit over-priced for what they are but I found no other better options for what I wanted.
