As said better to go with a good known brand. One of the better bang for the bucks right now is the VIOFO Dash Cam A119 Mini 2. It goes on-sale for around $100 every couple weeks. https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-STARVIS-Control-Parking-Supercapacitor/dp/B0C5MVB7NX/ That plus a high endurance memory card and you got a great setup with real 1440p quality.

They have 10 pin adapter that taps the power from the mirror to a usb. I installed that with this exact model camera on my 2024 SEL Premium. Works great but no power if the car is powered off, not sure if that matters to you.

I've had no need for parking mode so for the past 15 years we've been manually powering on/off our dash cams. It' has only been in the last couple of years or so that we started hardwring them yet I still have three dash cams we manually power on/off. OP needs to lower their prerequisites especially when their max budget is only $200 CAD... I'm in Canada also so.... In my opinion best if they choose something like the Viofo A119 Mini 2 w/HK4 hardwire kit, or the VS1 Mini with the HK5 hardwire kit. Psarking Mode is enabled/disabled via the camera settings (disabled by default), so leaving it off there should not be any concern of battery drain.

That's a bummer sorry to hear that. Yeah I am a techno junkie of sorts which also includes dash cams lol. I've been using dash cams in one for another since the late 2010's so we own many. At present we two 2-channel setups (front & rear) in both our car and truck. I've used many brands of dash cams with my fav being Viofos's, but 70mai fits in there too due to their value for the monies. I purchased my 70mai A810 pre-launch with it working just fine in my case but removed it as we decided to change our setups as shown below. The SD card I've mainly used with the 70mai's has been the SanDisk High Endurance ones ranging from 64GB to 128GB. Truck... \- Viofo A119 Mini 2 front \- 70mai M500 as a rear \- 70mai S500 2-ch rear view mirror dash cam Car... \- Viofo A229 Plus 3-ch \- Wolfbox G900 2-ch rear view mirror dash cam

Although I personally have no need for such a dash cam (recently purchased the Viofo A229 Plus 3-CH), it's impressive to see Viofo keeping on the bleeding edge of dash cam technology. I've been using Viofo dash cams successfully for over 5-years starting with a couple of A119 V3's, then a couple of Mini 2's. So looking forwarded to seeing how the newly released A329 fairs out-of-the-gate.

There are others, but my perffered brand is the wedge shaped Vofo's, such as the A119 V3, A119 Mini 2, A229 Plus, A229 Pro, etc. If used with their GPS mounts, the power cable is plugged into it, allowing easy removal without dealing with any cables whatsoever. These mounts can be purchased separately, allowing a single camera to become a multi-vehicle use camera. Add in an additional power source for the other dash cam(s), and you are set.

I'd get a dashcam with the newest Sony Starvis 2 sensor in it. It has the best Dynamic range of any current sensor so you can have a better chance of reading the license plates of the vehicles in the video when recorded at night. That's the most important thing in my opinion. Others may have other priorities. I have a Viofo A229 Pro that records in 4K and has a Starvis 2 sensor in the rear camera. If 1440p is all that you need, then the A119 Mini2 would be my choice. I would not go with the 4 year old Viofo A119V3 recommend by others today since it's got the outdated Starvis (not 2) sensor which was the best until 2023. Here's a recent summary of what's recommended from April 2024 from blackboxmycar. These guys actually test these dashcam side by side. They also sell and install all sorts of dashcams, so have a lot of experience with them. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kBYuUSbWqA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kBYuUSbWqA) Also here's another summary from vortexradar from about a month ago. They also do side by side visual quality tests of dashcams. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrvTxCEBbek](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrvTxCEBbek)

I'd go for the Viofo A119 Mini 2 instead today since the A119V3 has the outdated Starvis sensor whereas the A119 Mini 2 has the much better Starvis 2 sensor. The newer sensor has much better dynamic range so improves the chances of reading a license place of another vehicle at night. Being 4 years newer there are a lot of improvements. Here's a comparison review: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiIsqF2yir8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiIsqF2yir8) Edit: When you got the dashcam, it was definitely the one to get. It's just that recently, newer models with better picture quality have been released.

Why would hardwiring void your warranty? You're not changing any stock components, just tapping into an existing circuit and adding a fuse. And it's dead simple to undo it, you just unplug your add-a-fuse... Anyway, the A119 Mini 2 is excellent. I installed one on my girlfriend's car and will be installing one on my mom's car this weekend. The A229 pro front+rear is what I run in my car, attached to an external battery that is hardwired into the fuse box. I would just hardwire yours, and if you think you want front and rear later on just go ahead and get it now. But, you can hide wires pretty well even just using the 12V socket. It's just a matter of popping off interior trim panels.

Same experience and setup as RiverStrolling. The 128gb is adequate with the polarizing lens (I'm in Florida with plenty of glare). I also pull out the card periodically, put it in my laptop, and check to see that it's actually recording; I don't want any surprises later.

Also have Viofo A119 mini 2. It’s the cheapest dash cam with the Sony Starvis 2 Sensor. Linus Tech Tips did a comparison between dash cam that showed most dash cams (cheap v expensive) performed only as well as their sensor. You can power it via a long usb cable. Most people who go that route connect it to the back seat USBs bc there is no data connection there. If you do it in the front, folks have reported a message coming up on the dash asking you if you want a power or data connection. You can also power it via a hardwire tap in the rain sensor (similar to the FitCamX) but some have accidentally blown fuses or electrical issues to do that. For all these reasons, I went with a hardwire tap to the fuse box using Viofos HK4 kit. I’ve never done any car work (I don’t even own a socket wrench) and I managed to wire it up myself in about an hour, hiding the cable along the a pillar trim and headliner. I totally recommend this route! There are YouTube videos from Kilted Texan that help with this.

It depends on the sort of person you are Fitcam looks the best and is the sleekest but ever since i heard there were a minuscule number of cases where it interfered with Safety Sense, I decided it was not worth it as safety is the priority for me so I didnt want to take a chance with that. I hardwired the A119 Mini 2 in both my AP2 and DC2 last year and they're holding up well. It has all the normal dashcam functions and does have bluetooth functions but that's optional. You can still do everything on the dashcam itself without the app if that's your preference.

Front: 3ch Voifo A229... Just that does what you want. But... If you want USEABLE footage consider substituting their telephoto lens (used the rear port)... Then buy a separate standalone 1ch A119mini2 for the rear. If you wanna go nutso... Buy a 2ch A229+ for the rear and another telephoto for the rear two. That gives you telephoto and wide angle for front/rear... And inside camera too. (Probably cost $750ish with cards and hardwire kits).

I just put the VIOFO A119 mini 2 in my wife's RAV4 and it is really tiny and tucks in behind the mirror nicely. It has a tiny screen but turns off between one and three minutes. It turns on and off with the vehicle and a capacitor instead of a battery to tolerate higher temperatures. The phone app for it is easy but has a ton of options to configure it as you like. You can download or watch live on your phone via WIFI. It records up to 2K and can hold up to a 512 GB SD card. It also allows for voice commands cost in the low $ 100's.

to answer your question. I went with the VIOFO Dash Cam A119 Mini 2. it is small enough that i cant see it from the drivers seat. Hopefully this makes it less likely to be stolen. i also used the VIOFO HK4 Acc Hardwire Kit, USB-C. i made sure to buy a camera that uses usb C so i wont have to rewire if i upgrade later on. This kit does still need two fuse taps to wire up acc and battery power. With this set up the wiring is all completely hidden and the camera will turn off if the car battery gets low. Ill see if i can find a way to upload a video, the picture is great. I also added the glare lens that viofo sells.

Regardless of manufacturer, I recommend finding a camera with a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor. Look for recent reviews to make sure my info isn't out of date, but I'm pretty sure that any sensor other than STARVIS 2 is essentially daytime-only. No sensor is perfect, of course, but STARVIS 2 at least has a chance of recording license plates at night with headlights or nearby streetlights. Everything else will generally be too dark or smeary to be useful. There are several manufacturers that offer cameras with STARVIS 2 sensors. I tend toward Viofo, since the ones I've had have been very reliable. If you only care about forward-facing, the A139 Pro 1-channel model is 4K (~$200). For 2K/1440P, you can check out either the VS1 (~$140) or the A119 Mini 2 (~$100). Viofo frequently throws temporary discounts on their Amazon listings.

Page 7 of my manual says, "*The microSD card must have a Class-10 or UHS-I rating, and the capacity is up to 512 GB.*" Any card should work - I actually got an old Class-4 card to record sporadic clips in my A119 Mini 2 before burning it up. :-D The question is how long you want your card to last. You definitely want an "Endurance" card rated for dash cams. Nothing is worse than going to review a clip that is not there! :-O With it set to maximum bit rate at 1440p 30fps (\~40 mbps, or 5 MegaBytes per second) a UHS-I \[U1\] card with a V10 rating, meaning it writes at a minimum of 10 MegaBytes per second, *should* be all you need since it is a single-camera-only unit. I've hear of people wasting money on insanely fast write speed cards like the "Extreme Pro" with V90 ratings. :-D Even Viofo's flagship, the A329, writes at a maximum of 65mbps front cam and \~45mbps rear cam, for a *maximum* total of 110mbps. That's only \~14 MegaBytes/sec, which requires only a V30 card

I have a 128GB Max Endurance card with my A119 Mini 2. After review some recorded files, I calculated that it would hold around 9 hours of driving time. So 256 would hold 18 hours. And 512 would hold 36 hours. Since I would be copying off the card or downloading a crash or incident video right away (before driving another 9 hours), I decided 128 was fine. Not sure I would need to review an incident that happened 18 or 36 hours of driving in the past.

I’d say go with either the A119 mini or the A229 plus. Both have the Starvis 2 sensor which really helps with night time. [The A119 Mini 2 is cheaper](https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-STARVIS-Control-Parking-Supercapacitor/dp/B0C5MVB7NX?crid=2Y2ELQBTX901F&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.5nyPp72DnMI_ODE51ynTBjocCh5dIwi3KchnQREBKgUJP-ZLqBgCZzPlt53DOLk-60MJ-4WUMLNu8Rtn8Ap3AQuDawNvEUmlQWvEx-tv5DWgde1IJwTokeceWbv9aHWF3oGkVbnGoBVdFAZXoFUl8_HACYVQO3M3zQt8nfpyENW5tO7IC-_1Ahyo-mfNrP7bvDCKgBaSK-5vFjoXRdw82hB_-cuuFYA5EXKwOosDW6o.ZGFZD2Z7S5EEYzUktjWbe8S03pRz_2zT7Pj6z41Bj2U&dib_tag=se&keywords=a119%2Bv3&qid=1716994238&sprefix=a119%2Bv%2Caps%2C263&sr=8-5&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=lfttscl-dbc-20&linkId=0cc083c017bca6aaecc9d50227b55d37&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) and 2k resolution...which can marginally do better image quality. But it’s only a front cam. It’ll be easier to install though. If you’re looking for a dual cam then, [the A229 Plus is the way to go](https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A229-Plus-STARVIS-Ultra-Precise/dp/B0CKX14L34?crid=ODOCM20VAXM7&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.zPIWU7n-bytu1xxkTnuc2EyTGeeEdaXMTGYIwRIO215reF0iK25fC6AbS9LG-cr_xKgOQ5Z51A7yqwuTHFHAE5P_rShDvDQ_pp98f8-O5WiFIMPcxo7XQXkbN6NM-OXoFpCpsuvQt1xpKXT2MIn6yt6WoWsW0W9GK32xr-C1pvBXlLkUeNbMwOSmOfl8U_PzojCab3mjRYKUpaiP1gntsg3MLIRZJqojR-0t31IceLk.N_m—R9zWtiv3zwSf8q6q18csSdtThNsIctSbvBM-ds&dib_tag=se&keywords=VIOFO+A229+Plus+Dash+Cam+Front+and+Rear%2C+Dual+STARVIS+2+Sensors%2C&qid=1730008188&sprefix=viofo+a229+plus+dash+cam+front+and+rear%2C+dual+starvis+2+sensors%2C%2Caps%2C169&sr=8-3&linkCode=ll1&tag=lfttscl-dbc-20&linkId=22d987094893adf529b9c0e958278795&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl). Like I said, it has the same sensor so night time quality is the same. It’s 1440p on the front and 1440p on the rear cam...still very respectable. So if you want a front and rear cam, I’d go with that. Just get [a max endurance memory card](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084CJ9T2R/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_WFFHDWCRNAPCVZJ2PGSF?linkCode=ml1&tag=lfttscl-dbc-20) and you’ll be good to go.

[The A119 Mini 2 is cheaper](https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-STARVIS-Control-Parking-Supercapacitor/dp/B0C5MVB7NX?crid=2Y2ELQBTX901F&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.5nyPp72DnMI_ODE51ynTBjocCh5dIwi3KchnQREBKgUJP-ZLqBgCZzPlt53DOLk-60MJ-4WUMLNu8Rtn8Ap3AQuDawNvEUmlQWvEx-tv5DWgde1IJwTokeceWbv9aHWF3oGkVbnGoBVdFAZXoFUl8_HACYVQO3M3zQt8nfpyENW5tO7IC-_1Ahyo-mfNrP7bvDCKgBaSK-5vFjoXRdw82hB_-cuuFYA5EXKwOosDW6o.ZGFZD2Z7S5EEYzUktjWbe8S03pRz_2zT7Pj6z41Bj2U&dib_tag=se&keywords=a119%2Bv3&qid=1716994238&sprefix=a119%2Bv%2Caps%2C263&sr=8-5&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=lfttscl-dbc-20&linkId=0cc083c017bca6aaecc9d50227b55d37&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) and 4k resolution...which can marginally do better image quality. But it's only a front cam. It’ll be easier to install though. If you're looking for a dual cam then, [the A229 Plus is the way to go](https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A229-Plus-STARVIS-Ultra-Precise/dp/B0CKX14L34?&linkCode=ll1&tag=lfttscl-dbc-20&linkId=45361330c47c598c5b08977b88cca526&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl). Like I said, it has the same sensor so night time quality is the same. It's 1440p on the front and 1440p on the rear cam...still very respectable. So if you want a front and rear cam, I'd go with that.

I’ve also had really good luck with the A119 and A129 in the Arizona heat for the last few years. Although most capacitor dashcams should be able to handle heat. Here are all the [operating temps for different cameras. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/dashcams/s/8bg7mGCAsL) Hope that’s helpful

Take it from me, [unabashedly and unequivocally yes.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Dashcam/comments/i248rh/reason_1_to_have_a_dashcam/) You are responsible for the data as it goes on an SD card. It goes nowhere else unless you let it (By downloading and connecting via an app). Right now, the Viofo A119 mini 2. ANY camera is better than none, but the mini 2 is fantastic for the price. Note: I still use the same Roav A1 as in that link. If you can find it on ebay for cheap, I can absolutely recommend going that route.

The advice in Linus' video still holds up. Viofo has a few new models which seem to be the best bang for your buck. I got an A119 Mini 2 with a polarizing lens recently and it's miles higher in quality than my old $50 Garmin. It's still dash cam quality for sure, but license plates are way easier to read now, and the polarizing lens kills all reflection from my dashboard

I installed the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 in my Hybrid XSE. Was a pain in the butt. I used [this video to help with the install](https://youtu.be/kClSZ1Q_XhY?si=cC0zPnvPw0mTz0dR). The worst part was reseating the a-pillar body panel. The clip is a pain, but the video helped. I have the dashcam placed on the black dots portion next to the center/rearview mirror section. https://imgur.com/A2b3VQm https://imgur.com/O2oJonr I bought the CPL lens filter & HK4 Hardwire Cable bundle with the dashcam: https://www.amazon.com/%E3%80%90Bundle-Hardwire-STARVIS-Control-Parking/dp/B0C99BNBGQ The Rav4 uses low profile mini fuses, so you'll need to get fuse taps if you're going to hardwire. Someone uploaded this pic which was helpful. One of the open fuses was ACC and one was always on. Used those to power the dashcam: https://imgur.com/fg0NX0V Love the finished look. Super clean. [Dashcam video is nice](https://youtu.be/Ui3QslFuWZk?si=j7a4byBkOwr0QvzV). Having parking mode is nice, too.

I bought the Viofo A119 Mini 2 dash camera, amazing camera for $99 The dash cam group on reddit speaks highly of it. I installed it works flawlessly, video playback via iPhone and computer are impressive. I have had dash cams for years and over that time the hard wire parking kits have acted up on me. In this case I decided to plug it into the lower cigarette lighter as you don’t really see it. However I have one section of cable that I cannot hide. Does anyone have any knowledge or know where to look how to tuck or conceal this exposed wire. I cannot seem to push it through those two panels (shown in pics below) and I don’t see any way to easily take apart this area. I was able to tuck the wire easily in the headliner and down the sides but the exposed section I still may like to further conceal? I did not go with the mirror powered solution because Its a 2024 Calligraphy and I didn’t see that as an option? My wife says she doesn’t even notice, and I’m probably ok with it also but I know if anyone would know it’s this group. For those that did cigarette wired method how does yours look, what’s exposed?

The hardware is easy if you buy the hard wire kit it has these fuse adapters that you plug in, I plugged into the fuse for the door locks and for the stereo system. This allows it to use the parking mode to record when the car is off https://youtu.be/2y5UnMSiehs?si=Mt2egohGQ0PEzI7p

I have the Viofo A119 Mini 2 and connect it to a spare cable in the upper console with an adapter. It makes for a very clean install without having to run long lines or tap into the fusebox. The camera is great too.

I use the Viofo A119 Mini 2. I like it because it's small and has the upgraded sensor. [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C5MVB7NX/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C5MVB7NX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Check out the Best cam recommendations on the right side of the page. I recently picked up a couple of Viofo A119 Mini 2's and they work fine. If you go this route wait until they go on sale. I got mine for $90 each.

Best bang for buck - Viofo. I've got their A119 mini v2 ($87), A129 Plus Duo ($130 in 2020), and A119 v3 ($80, 2018/19? ish) in use, and will be picking up an A229 Plus Duo whenever they go on sale again (no tax if buying through their site, btw) Garmin, Blackvue, Thinkware also have very good track records, for both reliability and honesty. 70mai is generally well-regarded and trustworthy as well, but they have a penchant for using batteries in their cams, which (in earlier days of cams, at least) were prone to swelling in heat. You'll want a cam with a (super)capacitor instead of a battery to mitigate this The reason I mention honesty and trustworthiness - almost all other brands I've looked at lie in their marketing and say their cameras are capable of a resolution they aren't. E.g. Rove - their original 4k dashcam isn't true 4k, it's upscaled You'll be better served at /r/Dashcam (or /r/dashcams, I can never remember which is which) and dashcamtalk.com. You will also need to factor in the cost of a microSD card (high endurance highly recommended) and, if you don't want cables hanging around leading to your 12v cig lighter, the cost of a hardwire kit. A good 128GB card is ~$12-23, hardwire kit ~$15-25 https://dashcamtalk.com/best-dash-cams-of-2024/

Yes. The first thing I did with my BS was getting dashcam wiring. I have a VIOFO A119 Mini 2 that has good image quality, a relatively decent app, and is fairly discrete. I like it better than the Garmin I had before in my other car. The app is worse but everything else is better, particularly the fact that it stays in place, unlike the Garmin which has a crappy mount that lets it move. I don't have a rear dashcam just because the cost/benefit wasn't there for me, I think the front is enough to prove fault in 99.9% of crashes. The one thing I don't like is that I can't record both time lapses and normal clips at the same time, though I don't know if there's any dash cams that can. I also wired a radar detector at the same time, total cost for the wiring was about ~$180, worth it for a clean look in a new car that will be used for a long time to me.

I run a VIOFO A119 mini 2. My second viofo. Had my other one over five years in my other car and it hasn’t had any issues. Also pick up a “Dongar Dashcam adapter” from Amazon. You can run the power from your mirror to the dashcam and hide all the wires. And you don’t have to hardwire it.

None of these cameras had a Sony Starvis 2 sensor, yet if you pay a little extra, you can step up to the newer version of the Viofo A119, the A119 Mini2 which does, and which would beat the Viofo A119 V3 that won this test in the same way that the V3 beat most of the competition! Having stepped up to current generation Sony Starvis 2, you can then step up to the 4K version, which is another significant step, and then you get a bit stuck on image quality and going for a far more expensive Blackvue or Thinkware is currently a step down in image quality relative to the 4K Viofo A229 Pro, only reason you would take that step is to get cloud access to your parked car, but that is an expensive choice, both in cash and in license plate readability. Best image quality currently is the Viofo A329 series, which not only has Sony Starvis 2 sensors, but has also moved to the next generation of processors, which is bringing quite a few advantages.

When I was recently researching dashcams, I noticed that there were a lot from Viofo to choose from. I made this list to help me narrow down what I needed. Hope this is helpful. I use a Viofo A119 Mini up front. Powered from the fuse box. The camera is USB-C powered and the fuse kit I found on Amazon. Found a video on Youtube for how to wire it. Easy peasy. I cannot specifically remember the fuse numbers that I plugged into. I do remember that I wired it so it only turns on when the ID.4 is powered on. (Pressing the brake or the start button) You can wire it where it’s “hot” all the time for motion sensing, all depends on the fuses you pick. There are two required. Edit to add that the Viofo cameras have capacitors instead of batteries so you don’t run the risk of having an issue with a hot car. I have been a big fan of Garmin Dash cam mini 2. However, I just recently switched to Viofo (119 mini 2) as it is of higher resolution and comes with latest Starvis2 sensor which is quite good in the night. I moved my old Garmin Mini2 to the rear. Coming to wiring, I am using the usbc port in the second row to power the front cam. Trunk 12V for the rear cam. Note that none of these gets you constant power while parked. Works only when car is ON, or when charging.

Yes. Hearing the 2025 may use a different connector, so I'd double check if you can. Simple install, and I used the static cling sheet that the Viofo comes with. So far it hasn't fallen off. When I took the car in for a warranty repair I just peeled it off the window and tucked the wire up - didn't want them to have a reason to give me grief. Put it right back when I got the car back.

Hey I just barely got the A119 Mini2 as well. I ended up hardwiring mine, but I still need to go out and hide the cables (just installed it on sunday). Edit: Did you have to pop the mirror housing off the rear-view to stuff the wires? The hardwire kit has a large bulge in the cable (capacitor?) that unfortunately you cannot stuff, so I need to remove the plastic

Behind the head unit doesn't make sense. Dashcams are typically installed at the very top of the windshield, to the right of the rearview mirror. Just about any dashcam will work, just avoid Chinese dashcams (Korean/Japanese/American ones are fine). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrvTxCEBbek I'd go with: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-STARVIS-Control-Parking-Supercapacitor/dp/B0C5MVB7NX I don't personally see the value in rear dashcams, its extra wiring work and for insurance purposes the front wide-angle camera tells enough of the story. For example, if someone rear ends you and says you backed up into them or slammed on your brakes, you don't need a rear camera the front camera can show that wasn't true.

If you are in the market for a dual dashcam, I just got this from Vantrue Vantrue N2X 2.7K Uber Dash Cam... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9GRRXH5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share which has been pretty good so far. I also got this https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sku/6506838.p?skuId=6506838&sb_share_source=PDP to go with it. Before this I bought the Viofo A119 mini 2 which was pretty bad as the app was not retrieving any videos and the camera was not recording the videos properly. It was cutting it off abruptly every 30-45 seconds. Give this a shot for about 170$.

I was wondering the same thing about why it is not a standard feature considering how simple it is to implement on a manufacturer level. If you compare footage from Tesla and a dedicated cam--the first one really leave much to be desired. What's important in the camera is the size and capabilities of a sensor inside the cam. Tesla doesn't provide so much details and resolution in their videos, therefore it is hard to read plates, especially in motion, and especially in low-light. look into Viofo Mini 2 for a discrete look. Still a very capable camera. I would also look into Viofo A229 Pro. It doesn't look bulky when you look at it installed in-person. The shape of the cam plays well with the angle of the windshield, which makes it to blend in better than the other competitors.

While I wanted one like yours that looks like part of the car, I went with a viofo a119 mini 2. I stuck it on the black dots to the left. I can’t even see it when driving because it hides behind the mirror. I ran the cable down the A piller (behind the airbag) and fuse tapped in the box by the brake pedal. What do you mean exactly by “ideally where the rear cam plugs directly into the side of the front cam”? They all do that. It’s just a matter of if you want a wire dangling through the cabin to the rear of the car or if you take the time to hide the wire through the headliner. You’ll be hard pressed to find any two channel dash cam for ~100. Most, if not all dash cams, can be programmed for the screen to turn off after a set interval, so it isn’t distracting. I would check Amazon, but your budget will be extremely tough to work with for 2 channels. I would recommend the Viofo A119 Mini 2 since that is close to your budget, but that is a front camera only. This might be better for you though if you don’t want to deal with hiding the rear camera wire.

I'm using a 256GB card (Sandisk High Endurance, item code SDSQQNR-256G-GN6IA) , so I cannot speak to anything larger being supported (but I do see others have). I've had the camera for roughly 7 months now (bought 2 of them on Amazon and with deal of the day discount, got them for $185)and I am really happy with them. The phone app isn't bad but could be better. I still use an older cell phone with the Torque app installed and use the track recorder function (I have an obd2 bluetooth adapter that interfaces with it and I have extra gauges as overlays for it) for a secondary dash cam, but it's nice to have the features of a dash cam with great night vision recording, something that a Galaxy Note 3 phone doesn't do well. 🤣 Overall the A119 is a great dash cam. I have one in my car and have been trying to convince my wife to let me install the second one I bought in her car because these days I really do believe that everyone should have a dash cam in their car. For my Firebird I went with a ROVE R2-4K DUAL Dash Cam (front and rear camera) that I'll be installing in the spring. That car already encountered a hit and run when it was parked and I wasn't in it, so I'm a little paranoid about that happening again.

Fitcam dashcams are terrible dashcams. The 4K versions use the [Sony IMX 335](https://www.phase1vision.com/sensors/sony-sensors/starvis/imx335) sensor, which is a 5MP sensor (yes they flat out lie about having a 8MP sensor, see tear down [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Dashcam/comments/100qk66/fitcamx_4k_but_is_25k_cmos_battery_dead_replaced/)). This means it's only actually able to do 2.5K, and they just upscale it to 4k, thus the terrible image quality. For the same money, you can get a Viofo A119 Mini 2, which is a 2K camera that doesn't lie about its specs and uses the *far superior* Starvis 2 sensor.

r/Dashcam • [Fitcamx 4K] Just me or is this video quality trash for a $200 dashcam? You can't even make out the license plate of the car that turned in front of me, not that I care in this case. At least the cam installed easily and looks sleek. ->

I just bought the A119 Mini 2 and it works great. Downloading videos from it it very easy. The only problem I'm having is getting no power to it using the HK4 hardwire kit(s). Works great with the included USB-C cable though.

Maybe it's a good idea to get your own dashcam and even if your car gets the functionality in the future it's good to have a second one for failsafe and redundancy. If on a budget, the [VIOFO A119 Mini 2](https://dashcamtalk.com/viofo-a119-mini-2/) is a great option. Otherwise, I'd get the [VIOFO A229 Pro](https://dashcamtalk.com/viofo-a229-pro/), which is the one I have. It's been recommended as the best 4K dashcam for a while now. There is a new model that does 60fps instead of 30 but it's a little overkill and very expensive. This one will still produce better quality video than other dashcams, including the fancy 4K ones some cars come with now. It even comes as a 2 or 3 camera setup for adding a rear and an interior camera. As a bonus, they also have an external rear camera available for it, for pickup trucks or cars without a rear window, I guess :) Both of these have buffered parking mode recording with event detection. You can get them on [Amazon.se](http://Amazon.se) or order directly from the manufacturer's website (a little cheaper but it takes a couple of weeks).

After lots of research myself, I have the Viofo A119 mini 2 that has the Sony Starvis 2 sensor and it’s been great (my SD card is a 64gb SanDisk MAX Endurance). I like that it’s compact, and always works. It’s worked during the summer (95+°F days) and even with it freezing overnight now it’s had no issues. I determined in my research that this one was the best value for the money and anything with better video quality at even $300 was going to have negligible benefits. When blind comparing videos from the Viofo A119 mini 2 to other $300 dash cams, you could hardly tell the difference.

Not sure if the same issue, because I have a viofo, but I found that this happens on mine because the Mazda is trying to reconnect back to the phone. It somehow kicks off every other connection and gets prioritized on the phone. What I do is just turn off my phone's Bluetooth, and the Mazda stops trying, and your phone can stay connected to the dashcam's wifi.

Value for money front-only dashcam: Viofo A119 Mini 2 Top performing but barebones 4K front & 1080p rear dashcam: VIOFO A229 Pro Dual. 4K Dashcam with cellular LTE connectivity: BlackVue DR970X Plus 2CH LTE. 4K Dashcam with the best parking mode: Thinkware U3000 with built-in radar. All of the ones mentioned above have the latest Sony Starvis2 image sensors which are industry leading. If you’re after an easy to install and OEM looking dashcam, FITCAMX could be an option. I have the aliexpress 4K version in both my cars as it piggybacks power off the dimming rear view mirror and it slots under the ADAS sensors near the rear view mirror, took 5 min to install. But the image sensor is old, it has no parking mode with included harness and it has no GPS so no co-ordinates or speed.

I'm successfully using this cable on my two Toyotas https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D2D78KMJ?ref=emc_b_5_mob_t Other redditors reported success with this one as well https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZ7QJVHC?ref=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_H76099TX42XDAEK2XCE3&ref_=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_H76099TX42XDAEK2XCE3&social_share=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_H76099TX42XDAEK2XCE3&starsLeft=1&skipTwisterOG=1 You just buy this cable (12P type C), open the lane assist cover, connect this Y cable in between the lane assist connection, and with that, you have a powered USB port right in the middle of your windshield. Then just install the Viofo cam (I recommend Viofo a119 mini 2) or anything else needed and connect it there. Done. Simple as that. No hard routing in the A-pillars etc. It's the same method FitcamX uses, except Fitcamx is crap compared to Viofo.

I did not hardwire mine, just plugged it inside my car. One Viofo mini at the front, then got one from amazon at $35 and placed it at the back (both connected by long cables). I DIY the viofo by sticking it to a speed trap radar detector mounting base that has a suction cup and now I can remove the viofo whenever I want.

For others that are shopping, the starvis 2 sensor this has is great. I have both the older and newer viofo units, and the starvis 2 definitely makes a difference compared to the previous gen.

I have the same in my 2024 XLE ICE. Ran the cord along the top, behind the weather stripping of the passenger door, through the side, behind the gloves box and down through a hole beneath the radio but above the usb ports (there’s a light in higher trims but it’s just a hole). I have the VIOFO Mini because I only needed something to record the front. I wanted something minimalist, as I didn’t like the idea of a cable running across my dashboard. I was about to buy a Fitcamx, but after reviewing them, I didn’t like them. What did I do? I found out that the same company that makes Fitcamx also manufactures an adapter. So, I connected that adapter to the front sensor and ran a cable to the camera. Technically, it’s not visible.

There is a neat community and [recommendations thread on /r/dashcams](https://www.reddit.com/r/dashcams/comments/1iube1b/dashcam_recommendations_on_reddit/). Helped me get my A119 which was around $90 when I got it on sale.

Texan here with the A119. I’ve had it for over 5 years, no issues

I also highly recommend Viofo. I have an older bigger version (cheapest) and it has had no issues on my car in over a year. I bought my fiancé the Mini though, and it has melted 2 different attachments so try going for the bigger one if you can

Screw it looking oe. What you really want is a good camera. Viofo makes some of the better ones WITH a rear camera as well. After doing lots of research, lots of them use garbage cameras but the better ones use Sony. Specifically the Song Starvis. The Starvis 2 just recently came out and viofo made a new one with the 2. Good cam, doesn't look ugly. Supports parking recording and collision detection. [viofo Amazon ](https://a.co/d/izrOa1d)

Same, but I upgraded to the Mini 2. Better night images. But the A119 is now my back view camera.

Viofo on Amazon. Most are around $80-$100. If you spend any more than that you’re probably paying for features you don’t really need. I got the Viofo A119 Mini with Wi-Fi. Footage is good, can download videos to my phone within minutes, you can see some videos shit with it on my profile.

Yes, although I would go for any Viofo with the Sony Starvis sensor.

I have a garmin mini 3. It takes great video but its slow to connect to from your phone via wifi. I have a viofo a119 mini in another car but I don't think the angle would be right for a rear dash cam. The garmin mini 3 fits really well and isn’t too intrusive. https://preview.redd.it/pczycgw1xaue1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f49e58449e8e04300a899d96dc382dd4a632b11

The best cameras are the Viofos but the Fitcam is the easiest to install cleanly and looks OEM so it really depends on what you're after.

For dashcam, i would recommend either Viofo or Ventrue. Make sure you get the ones with Sony Starvis2 sensor so you can capture the license plate numbers. Hot wire kit is a must of you want constant power and a clean installation

I've ran several viofos with no problems. Currently run a A119 V3. No problem easy install. Been running them for years. Usually if something is wrong, its the sd card.

I use Viofo 119 mini for the front camera and the 119 v3 for the rear camera. The whole setting costs less that $200 total when on sale. I prefer the smaller one up front so that it occupies less of my windshield. I bough a long usb C cable and run it from the middle console, under the floor mats, to the rear window. It sucks that the new Highlander doesn't have a 12v or an usb port in the trunk area.

I've had good luck with the viofo dash cams over the years. Some of the more expensive viofos have the Starvis 2 sensor, which does get a slightly better image (which might help if you are reading a license plate). Buy a really good high-endurance SD card, no matter what you buy And if you are ever in a collision, read the plate out loud so the mic can pick it up. Just in case the camera doesn't quite pick it up.

Is it a newer model? Caz my viofo from 2020 failed me the only time I needed it's footage to find the driver who side rubbed my car on the road. He sped away. Number plate was not legible. And the darn wifi transfers were dead slow.

I have had 4 different dash cams in four different vehicles and only one fail. And it started failimg because of the way it plugged in to USB. i'm guessing over the years it just kind of jiggled loose. tape was holding it together .I got rid of was because the software stopped working on android 13 because it was never updated. That was a vantrue but it was still working. I have a Rexing now and when I lost the rear camera somehow (when moving car to car) they actually sent me a new rear camera free of charge. That was some really impressive customer service. The A119 in my wifes car and Kenwood in my truck are the original ones I stuck in there years ago and I still working fine.
