Haven’t seen anyone mention the Breville Precision with thermal carafe. It gives you a wide range of adjustment for bloom time, temp and pour over speed, the carafe holds 60 ounces and it’ll keep coffee hot for 8 hours (warm for another 8 to 12 depending on how full it is).

Breville Precision brewer and Fellow Aiden allow you to tweak a lot. But the Moccamaster quietly and easily delivers good brews.

Okay so in order of importance: 1) grinder 2) espresso machine 3) drip machine / pour over 1) grinder. It sounds like you need something that’s capable of both filter coffee and espresso. There are tons of options out there and it’s a huge rabbit hole. Based on reviews I’ve watched, I think I’d reccomend the Timemore 064s. [Here’s a good video going over a lot of the options in your price range](https://youtu.be/3VohJapkObs?si=tYM0scVHTklmwoyM) 2) espresso machine. The two options I’d recommend are the Breville bambino plus or the Gaggia Classic Pro, depending on what type of person your partner is. If they are a tinkerer and like to upgrade things over time and do a bunch of research, you want the Gaggia. If they like a more set it and forget it experience, the Breville is the best thing you can get out of the box for your budget. Both have built in milk frothers as most semi auto espresso machines do. 3) drip machine. Now, if you think your partner would like to do a pour over every morning (about a 10-15 min process) you can go that route and get them a v60 and kettle. But what I’d actually recommend is the Breville Smart Brewer with the insulated carafe instead of hot plate. There are a lot of good drip coffee makers - the smart brewer has some really nice UI/UX feature imo. Your partner could grind the coffee the night before, then set it on a timer so there’s fresh brewed, hot coffee right when they wake up. Don’t get any drip machine with a hot plate as it just burns your coffee I think this setup will come in a few hundred below your budget, so you could use leftovers to get them a subscription for coffee or a nice big gift card to any roasters you know they like * if you are in the EU, everything Breville will actually be called Sage Good luck, and what an awesome gift! Sorry about formatting I’m on mobile

Just as a data point, I don't like my Breville Precision Brewer at all. Huge disappointment, and far too many shortcomings for the price point imo. It replaced my Wilfa Tim Wendelboe brewer (1st gen) – I would have bought that again had it still been available in the U.S.

I had one for about a year and determined it was my brew size. It's way easier to get a great tasting batch when your making 500+ ml than 1 or 2 cups (which was my normal use case). I ended up getting rid of it and getting an Aiden and I'm much much happier. Even brewing a single cup I can get a great tasting one basically every time.

The breville precission brewers allow you to put the pour over into the machine to simulate a pour over. So you can put your stainless and glass pour over into the breville instead of the normal plastic filter piece. Its a lot of coin to avoid plastic, but it does work. And the breville is a great coffee maker: [Breville Precision Brewer Tribute Edition Pour Over Coffee Brewer | Seattle Coffee Gear](https://www.seattlecoffeegear.com/collections/breville/products/breville-precision-brewer-coffee-maker-tribute-edition) > **Automatic Pour Over** \- Each Precision Brewer includes an adapter and restricted spray head for your Kalita or Hario pour over cone.

If you can squeak out a few more dollars (or find it on sale) check out the Breville Lux Brewer. I have the Precision brewer for 5 years or so and its been outstanding and I would recommend except it does not have a removeable reservoir (I wish it did!). Looks like the Lux Brewer has the same functionality but has the removeable reservoir. I dont know if it can do single cups without using the carafe, but its completely capable of making single cup qtys because thats pretty much all I use it for. It has a bunch of other cool features like cold brew, pour over adapter, and things like that. Its programmable to whatever recipe you want but I almost always use the default gold setting. It makes great coffee provided you use good beans, grind, water quality, and so forth. There are cheaper ones, but this is the one that I would go for as it uses an insulated carafe instead of a warmer plate. I really enjoy my Precision Brewer as well. The only downside is the drip lock not working and always dropping 1 droplet of coffee when I pull out the carafe. It vaporates quickly from the heatbed, but it's annoying having to clean it once a week. The coffee not being hot enough is a thermal carafe problem. It doesn't exist with the glass one, try buying that and turing on the keep warm in the brewer settings.

I just got the Breville Precision a week ago. It makes amazing coffee and makes much more sense than burning through 3-4 nespresso pods a day. I’ve used it while grinding before use and the night before with the timer, both scenarios the coffee taste is great. My gripe with it is the non-removable water container.

I’ve had a [Breville precision coffee maker](https://a.co/d/2D0rsVL) for the last 5 years and highly recommend it. They have a model with a glass carafe and another with the thermal carafe. Get the thermal one. I recommend this model because it mimics a pour over method when making coffee. You can use cone or regular filters. You can customize your brew in several ways, which is perfect for someone who is into coffee, but also wants the convenience of a push start, make coffee machine. Whatever you choose, I’d stay away from the models with a combo grinder + drip coffee maker. If you’re into coffee, you’ll want to get a fancy grinder and none of the combo machines really hit the bar. I hope your BF appreciates the thoughtful gift. That’s really kind of you to get something meaningful like this for him.

I’ve got a breville/Sage precision brewer and it’s been great. I think it’s 5 years old now and basically like new. Gives me options if I want to be fancy but otherwise the default “gold” setting gives a good cup. My only complaint is that they only have the water track markings in ounces and I’m doing my ratios in grams per liter, so I made my own tank markings.

I'm getting ready to send my second Precision Brewer back to Breville for the second time, with the same problem I had with the first Precision Brewer. It brews only half or a quarter of a pot then says its hot and stops. I'm over it and will be moving on. The Aiden is starting to look pretty good.

Just get a chemex. No plastic, will last forever if you don't break it. Makes great coffee. Whatever you do, don't buy the Breville Precision... The lid design is defective. Mold grows inside the lid, and there's no good way to clean it out. Gross.

I'll usually brew about 1.2L at a time. So I go with 1.2L Water / 75 g of freshly ground beans usually roasted about 5-7 days prior. Grind is medium/coarse (setting 7 on a Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2). As far as the settings on the brewer, I'll usually go with the Gold settings -- making sure I'm using the cone filter instead of the basket filter. I've played around with brew temp, bloom times and such, but found that the Gold settings worked fine for us. For drip, it does a good job. It's convenient when we are in a rush in the morning and need to have some coffee ready to go. It isn't better than an Aeropress, V60 or French Press. I'll typically go with one of those when I have more time in the morning. But, in a pinch -- the Breville has worked out well for us.

>My only gripe is that it's not hot enough for milk to be added cold. What do you mean by this? You can just adjust the brew temperature. If you have the glass carafe, I'd recommend the thermal carafe - it's one of the best I've ever seen and easily keeps coffee hot for many hours. We also use this machine, though the Breville version since we are in the US, and love it.

I know everyone is going to say Moccamaster, but I will die on this hill: the Breville Preciscion Brewer is LEAGUES better. I wanted to get a really nice coffeemaker for my birthday a year ago and initially bought the Moccamaster (because that's the one everyone says to get), and I was pretty disappointed. The coffee was...fine? My BF, seeing my disappointment, insisted we try the Preciscion Brewer "just to see." We decided to keep whichever made the better coffee. He spent quite a bit of time tweaking the settings, and once we figured out the perfect settings... GAME OVER! I can't drink coffee from anywhere else now 😭 We've had it just coming up on a year now, and we still love it ad much as the day we bought it!! We have the metal/vacuum-seal carafe FWIW.

café-quality doesn’t come from buying a programmable brewer with an auto shutoff, op that just means you’ll get bad coffee on schedule. what actually matters is water temp stability and grind consistency. extraction control to a lesser extent that’s why machines like the moccamaster, breville precision, or fellow aiden keep getting sold out. they hit proper brew temps and don’t choke flavor out of your beans. same on the espresso side: the gaggia classic is the bare minimum for something that can actually pull shots close to café standard. and here’s the part you people hate hearing, even [a casabrews](https://vorolab.github.io/grab/?q=MCS40332) can make good coffee if you know your workflow. give it a half-decent grinder, get your puck prep right, use good water, and it’ll produce shots better than what most chain cafés are serving. the machine’s not the bottleneck nearly as often as the operator is. gear helps, sure, but technique is what decides if your cup tastes pro or just like sad bean juice.

I would say a Moccamaster is perfect if you’re not a coffee snob because it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of other high end drip machines. The thing doesn’t even have an alarm function to start making your coffee in the morning… because it doesn’t have a clock. This also makes them practically indestructible. I’m getting frustrated with my current drip machine (a Breville YouBrew with the worst Carafe in history), and I’m considering upgrading because I don’t need the bells and whistles.

I sold my precision brewer after a while, partly because of it being difficult to clean properly. It had all these nooks in the basket and the thermal caraffe lid always contained leftover liquid which seemed unhygienic[](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&sca_esv=8c342fd051715880&q=how+to+pronounce+unhygienic&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAOMIfcRowy3w8sc9YSnjSWtOXmPU5eINKMrPK81LzkwsyczPExLjYglJLcoV4pPi4eIqzcuoTM9MzctMtmJRYkrN41nEKp2RX65Qkq9QANSVD9SWqoBQBAAn2r_lXwAAAA&pron_lang=en&pron_country=gb&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwixyter7IuNAxXLcvEDHdKYIH4Q3eEDegQIPhAO). I havent tried it, but I hear the cold brew function on it is a joke, though. Really good coffee beans make all the difference in the world too. Same. Bought it full price though but worth it. They're called Sage in Europe (I guess the website redirects though) and they also have a glass carafe one with heat plate but don't get that. The insulated one will keep your coffee warm for roughly a working day and heat plates burn your coffee.

They are really simple machines so getting one that is more expensive means it is probably full of features you don't need but that are points of failure. You really need to go high end on drip machines. Like, my programmable Sage (Breville outside of the EU) Precision Brewer is great but it's a 300€ machine. Even a Moccamaster is just a 300€ machine that has two buttons. On/off and half / full can. It's maybe a bit more stylish. It might have a more complex program, it might have higher quality materials. But none of that matters if you don't grind your coffee in the morning. You can throw some store bought pre ground garbage into the cheapest coffee maker you can find and it will taste the same. So just get the 30€ one and replace it every 2 years. Everything between 30 and 300€ is just the 30€ machine with a timer.

I wouldn't really consider it to be a one machine to rule them all type of machine because it is non-adjustable other than the amounts of coffee and water you use. If you’re in the US, go find a local TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. They typically have Breville Precision Brewers for on sale for $179. I actually got one for $89 recently. Any of those on your list will be perfectly fine though. I like the OXO stuff for the money, but if you can wait on a moccamaster sale you’d be in good shape. It’s not my favorite brewer at MSRP (I much prefer the Breville precision, the Ratio 6, and the Fellow Aiden—all of which I’ve owned), but if you can get it around $200 it’s great.

If you’re using a good machine and grinder there’s really no quality difference whatsoever once you’re dialed in. Drip and pour over are conceptually the same thing, it’s just a matter of if you wanna do it yourself or not. I make pour overs for smaller weekend or evening cups, batch/drip for mornings before work to save time and brew larger cups. Using a Fellow Aiden currently, which has been great but also have the Breville Precision (also great) and have had the Ratio 6 and Moccamaster previously.

Lol, yeah, I suppose I was exaggerating a bit. Anyways, that’s beside the point - I don’t think it would be worth the money for OP to buy an Aiden if he has a poor quality grinder and isn’t buying good beans. That was the main thing I was trying to say. I’ve owned an Oxo 8-cup, Breville Precision and my dad owns an Aiden so I’ve tried that now too and they are absolutely fantastic, although my favorite is still a pour over. None of those would be as good without good grinders, though.

That setting that would slowly release cold water over the night - does it have an automatic start do it can start brewing let say at 6am -is it compatible with thr v60 adapter that thr precision brewer had -can it saved the settings of pre infusion and temperature like "my brew" so next time you don't need to re add thr settings evey time -there is no longer a glass version with heatplate right? And finally is this replacing the precision brewer or is it to be sold next to it?

It's true; I had a Breville Precision before I upgraded to the Aiden, so I am familiar with it :) e: the only possible reason I could even remotely think of is just wanting the spacer it includes to raise the cup a bit if you have the version with the heater under a glass carafe and don't want your cup resting on the heater but you can literally use anything to raise the cup (I used a ramekin, even though I had the thermal carafe version, just for less splashes)

It has several options to customize under "My Brew" including bloom time, temp, flow rate, etc. I don't have a problem with the coffee not being hot enough, but I haven't checked the temps with a thermometer. I usually can't drink it right after pouring from the carafe and a little milk cools it to the right temp for me. My minor gripe is cleaning the thermal carafe. It gets quite a layer of old coffee and scrubbing, vinegar, coffee cleaning tablets haven't worked well. And the cap seems to trap a dribble of coffee as well. I'll probably have to get a replacement carafe eventually.

A lit of brewers are like that, they use the full water you put in. I have a Sage (Breville) PB and I just have a jug next to it that I use to fill it up. Just add only as much water as you intend to make, same as when adding coffee

Other people have pitched in with their replies (and as always the main ones are the Moccamaster and the Sage/Breville PB) but one thing to add is to go for one with a thermal carafe. Forget the glass carafes with the heating plates. Thermal carafes are such a better experience and convenience unless you want to keep your coffee for more than 4-5 hours

I’ve had my Breville Precision for a couple of years now. Choosing the “gold” option is very good, but you also have the option to create and save your own settings for water temp, bloom time, and brew time. I’ve only started tinkering with those settings along with grind size with my Breville Grinder and I have absolutely noticed an improvement by going beyond the default settings. This brewer can be a simple one button push if you just want fast and easy every morning, but you can also play around with things to dial in exactly what you want.

Yo mate, I have had the sage or Breville precision brewer since last easter and it is amazing with temp control and single cup brewing. For my first machine it is amazing and it can brew 1.8l (idk in ounces or cups). It is currently on sale in the UK with some stores selling it for less than 200 quid. I would recommend getting a good grinder with the rest of the money as it allows you to spend more on the grinder.

I have the Breville Precision brewer, it works great but the heating pad looks like shit. The non-stick coating or whatever is it wore out and now I have to clean it or it will get rusty. Before that I had a $20 coffee maker and the coffee the Breville makes is so much better. I just wish they would've made their heating pad better quality.

The Aiden might be overkill -- sounds like the thing you want is a good drip coffee maker with a clock.  The "clock" part isn't the expensive thing (you can get a Mr Coffee thing with a clock for $30), it's the "good". Tbh I'd buy a decent one second hand. I've used the Behmor Brazen and Oxo 9 cup, and recently switched to the Breville Precision (all second hand), and can vouch for all of them, tho I really do like the Precision the best. And all are cheaper than the Aiden.

I do both pour over and drip. You can get really complicated with pour over, and you will see endless posts where people claim that unless you have this and that you will not achieve good coffee. Honestly don't worry about it. I have a V60 switch, you will see posts saying that V60s aren't the best, you need zero bypass etc etc etc, you will also see people come up with really complicated steps for a V60 switch. I have a 1z presso x-ultra hand grinder, it's a pretty good all rounder, you will see people say that unless you have a K6, or Pietro your pour over, or a commandant it won't taste good. But you could just get yourself an 1zpresso Q air for like £40 or whatever and still make great coffee. I don't have a £200 gooseneck kettle, I use an old sainsburys own brand one. I just buy the normal brand V60 papers, none of this quick flow, slow flow stuff I have two recipes, one is the one I use every day which is a version of this one [The Coffee Chronicler] (https://youtu.be/68ZOXrXbVHc?si=xLblP-Ti7n62W-rS)onicler Really easy, two pours, really nice coffee! And a more complicated one that I do for very specific coffees because it takes longer and I only do it when I can be really bothered. [Tetsu Kasuya](https://youtu.be/4FeUp_zNiiY?si=QHL2URVPQOq5SJA3) I also have a breville precision brewer, I have my own custom set up, but the "gold" setting is really nice so no need to get technical with it. I would say drip is less effort overall, but the downside is you have to grind a lot of coffee in one go, and the coffee will stay warm for maybe around 4 hours with the thermal carafe (I think the new luxe precision is better). So you can't make all day coffee. Also the cost is higher with the cost of the machine and grinder. Pour over can be more fun, if you're doing it for fun, cheaper entry, and you can try different beans per cup if you have the time and effort.

I was also disappointed with my cuisinart coffee maker and grinder. I have been happy with a breville precision brewer and baratza encore grinder since switching a couple years ago.

Breville Precision if he cares about the ability to tweak a bunch of variables, despite the brewer not being very remarkable to look at on your counter every single day. Moccamaster if he cares about design. If he’s into mid century design, things like Herman Miller furniture, vintage Braun products, record players, etc. Fellow Aiden if he’s into the latest tech They’ll all brew pretty good coffee, but in my opinion these three serve three different types of people. I care about my coffee and nerd out over my pour over coffee, but I own a Moccamaster because I simply cannot justify having an ugly coffee maker on my counter 24/7/365 when something as beautiful as the Moccamaster exists

Looks nice but still looks like its going to be pain to clean, too many intricate parts, they should take notes from moccamaster

its not about how many parts but about how are they deisgned, the lid for the carafe is hollow and cannot be disassembled, same the plastic part on the carafe also cannot be removed and yes coffe goes underneath it. source: I owned the previous precision brewer for years this looks like they didnt improve a thing on this new one

I only make filter coffee at home. I use the Breville Precision brewer and I'd recommend it over the other two filter options you have. First, it's very configurable. Second, it comes with an insulated steel carafe. If you already ruled it out, I'm curious why?

After owning multiple moccamasters and feeling like they channelled and brewed too hot for more extractible beans I've switched to the breville precision brewer based on advice from the coffee nerds I know. Could not be happier with the function and brewed coffee. Going on 3 years with no issues.

My experience with vacuum carafes is that if you are brewing a small amount t of coffee, you need to first warm up the carafe, else the cool carafe cools the hot coffee. Do you experience that with the moccamaster? I have the breville precision and have been considering a switch

I have an aeropress and for anything over one aeropress cup, I will brew using my drip brewer. Sometimes, that’s 20oz. The breville will bloom the grounds initially and then there is a pause before it lets the rest of the water out. By the time the coffee is in the pot, it’s cool. I have to boil water and preheat the carafe and the filter basket to get hot coffee for small volume. Such a pain.

I love ours. I replaced the Breville Precision Brewer (a fine coffee maker) with it. Makes great coffee from 300 ml to 1300+ ml. Cold brew also works like a charm.

I had a Cuisinart "Grind - N Brew" with the built in grinder for 10+ years. Thought i'd "Upgrade" to the Breville with its hopper of coffee beans and it automatically figuring out how much coffee to grind based on how many cups of coffee you were making in the pot. After about 2 years it started to leak, starting off once in a while, and then getting worse. And by leak, it's not just some water running out... its while the coffee is being made and since I use the timer i'd come downstairs in the morning to see a ton of coffee spilled all over the counts, down the drawers, and on the floor. The chute between the grinder and basket would also clog. I went back to a new Cuisinart like 3 years ago and it's been great.

It depends what you want: If you want to tweak and maybe hit maximal bean flavor expression w/ said tweability, probably a fellow aiden. If you want a no fuss tank that'll last forever - Moccamaster If you want a few basic features but nothing crazy that'll also be very durable - Sage/Breville brewer
