Melitta is certainly a household name in coffee (though here in the States, they're mostly known for their filter papers being in every supermarket). More important is your other question: is the ECBC list just marketing, or is there something to it? You might be familiar with the [SCA home brewer list](https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer). That actually is a useful resource: the SCA is known for making a real effort to certify brewers that actually make good coffee, and to make it onto their list a brewer needs to meet very specific standards that I have completely forgotten but I promise actually make sense. At a glance, the ECBC list looks suspiciously similar to the SCA one. To me, that is a very positive signal; it suggests that the ECBC is assessing machines against against very similar standards. That said, I implore you to buy [the version with the thermal carafe](https://www.melitta-international.com/filter-coffee-machines/our-categories/Allfiltercoffeemachines/Melitta-One-Therm), **not** the glass one. It will likely be moderately more expensive, but your coffee will taste *hugely* better. (Reason is that hotplates are the enemy of good-tasting coffee.)
> I strongly dislike ECBC / SCA "certifications". Terrible business model. What "business model" are you talking about? They're a trade association (at least the sca is), not a for-profit enterprise. > It's normally cheaper to just buy the version with the glass carafe and just get a Thermos on the side. Can't be by much. And it's both more annoying and probably less good.
I went from a 30+ year old Melita drip and French press to a Moccamaster. While the coffee is better, so are the coffee grounds due to a far superior grinder that I also purchased. The Moccamaster is a beautiful machine that my wife and I enjoy daily. Small price to pay.
