r/dronesI used the Holy Stone HS430 I was given as a gift today. 2 minutes later it bumps into a tree and a rooftop and now it's gone.

Holy stone is a good brand. the very first camera drone I owned was a holy Stone HS720e, and though it's not a gimbal drone, it's an solid build and has a lot of power. In the end I really needed a gimbal so I quickly upgraded to DJI. I also never had a chance to really test how consistent the signal was on that drone. Which is a significant thing, when it comes to drones you have to have solid connections or solid RTH if connection fails. In the end, I don't fly any nicer holy Stone drones now because once you get to their upper end their prices start to reflect the prices of other brands that I think surpass them, namely fimi. People have a billion reasons to hate fimi, maybe I've just been lucky and gotten non-lemons from them, but I just can't think of a better value in drones currently. Besides building your own quad, of course. Until recently, I owned hs430, in fact I can see it right now (it's about 50 ft up in a tree and not worth it for me to grab). It's a good cheap drone for practice, and I almost solely flew mine outdoors. Unstabilized drones like the hs430 are good way for absolute beginners to get ready for freestyle flying. It doesn't do everything for you like an optical flow drone, though it can be calibrated to hover in place fairly well in a windless room. It requires counteractive stick input if you want it to behave like an optical flow drone. The way these unstabilized drones handle is much more like you would expect from a race quad, in a very limited sense. Unless you're in sport mode with a DJI, it's tries to come to a stop as quickly as it can after you release the control sticks. With the hs430, if you're hauling ass (relatively speaking) and want to come to a quick stop you can't just let go of the sticks, you have to reverse throttle or you're going to keep moving a ways. If the wind has any input, pilot has to actively counter that. I think that type of stabilization is what separates full-blown gps camera drones from what are commonly called toy drones. For what (I think) you want, I'm going to recommend a Fimi Mini 3 (not the mini 3 SE). Can be found on sale for sub 300, though mostly it seems to approach 400 now. The footage will satisfy 95%of people, 4k/60fps or 48 MP photos, night mode and good digital zoom. Great optical flow stabilization, no it doesn't have obstacle avoidance. Flight characteristics are fucking awesome for a camera drone. It can fly circles around my larger camera drones, my DJI air 2s and my Fimi x8 tele max. Insane acceleration, light enough to stop on a dime. For me it's one of my favorites to fly just because it's extremely nimble compared to most gimbal camera drones. I've flown a potensic atom 2, and can say with confidence they are also contender.

If you’re brand new to flying, get a toy drone you can fly in the house. I have other drones, but still love to play around with the Holy Stone Mini. They’re about $40, and can take a beating. It’s definitely a toy, but is controlled the same as more expensive drones. Super fun.
