The M40 doesn't have external grind adjustment- no way I would ever get it. Copying an outdated grinder like the commandante is a weird business model. I have used a K6 every day for the past 2.5 years. I also have a baratza Virtuoso+ that I've basically not touched since I got the K6.
Because it's absolute crap. It might break apart beans, but the "burrs" in it bash the beans apart and don't cut them. I owned this same grinder at one point a LONG time ago, and I can tell you it does an absolute miserable job of grinding coffee. No one wants to believe how much of a difference the grinder makes, but it really makes a frigging huge difference in the quality of coffee. I switched from using a Baratza Virtuoso+ ($250) to a much cheaper handgrinder - the Kingrinder K6 ($100), because the burrs in the K6 are a LOT better.
You're welcome. I think there are a lot of great alternative suggestions in other comments, but I do want to throw in my two cents in about one issue, which is the possibility of upgrading your current Virtuoso to the M2 burrs. I used the Virtuoso+ with M2s for many years (maybe 5?) as my primary grinder, and the original Encore before that – more than a decade combined between the two grinders. I did not find the M2 burrs to be a significant upgrade. I think both the original Encore burrs and the M2s are good for batch brew, and pretty bad for pourover at any roast level. I was always fighting between grinding coarser than I wanted, or grinding as fine as I wanted but dealing with the possibility of clogged filters/inconsistent brews. I brew medium to medium-dark for my wife's pourover every morning, and both of us think her coffee got better when I started using the Ode.
I got a Delonghi Dedica Maestro Plus on sale on Amazon for $300. It was between this and the Bambino Plus because my wife wanted the auto steamer. My grinder is a Baratza Virtuoso+. I know it's not an espresso grinder but I also make a lot of cold brew at home and could only afford one grinder after my last one gave out, so I got a jack of a trades grinder. Grinder does work for espresso, it does get fine enough, it's just bigger jumps in size compared to a dedicated espresso grinder, so I may not dial it in as perfectly.
I have a Baratza Virtuoso+ and a Kingrinder K6 and use the K6 daily for 2-3 v60 pourovers a day. I'm amazed at how easy it is to use and the fantastic coffee it produces.
The timing of this video was perfect as I was in search for a new grinder for pourover and light espresso. I sold my Baratza Sette 270Wi after using it for 7 years which paid for the Shardor 64mm + SSP MP Burrs. I received it Sunday and seasoned it with just a pound of old beans I was never going to drink. Every v60 and switch drink I made with this has been fantastic. Excited to see how it improves after 10 lbs. NOTE: I've been using a Baratza Virtuoso+ and Kingrinder K6 for pourover lately. The Sette 270Wi was exclusively for espresso. I hoped to sell both Baratza grinders so I could have one electric that could do both espresso and filter.
Get a Baratza Virtuoso+. It's an investment but a significant step up from the Encore and totally worth it. What kind of drip matters, too. I have an Origami for that and am quite happy.
I have the virtuoso +, and I never use the timer…I always weigh them.
Fair point. I don’t leave beans in the hopper exposed to air. I store them in an airscape canister and weigh out what I need for a brew. I leave mine set at 40 seconds, and turn it off when the beans are through.
When my encore got to be over twelve years old, I sent it to baratza and had it rebuilt…new motor, circuit board etc. I also had them upgrade the burr to the m2 burr. This is the burr used in the virtuoso +. While I was waiting, I got a virtuoso +, because I can’t wait that long for a cup of coffee😄 when I got the encore back, I was impressed with the service. They discounted some of the parts and labor…I believe it was less than $100.00 usd. I don’t see much difference between the two grinders….the encore seems to grind faster than before. I don’t use the timer on the V+, as I weigh my beans as needed. I would be equally happy using either grinder. I keep the encore, because my wife likes flavored beans and I don’t want my light roasted beans tasting like French vanilla.
We have the virtuoso plus after seeing the reviews of the encore. The timer is a nice feature to have
We use the baratza virtuoso +, best value we found
Fair point, one best or won't break the bank. I'm looking mid-range, and after a ton of research and reviews or reddit threads, the [Baratza Virtuoso+ Grinder](https://www.reddit.com/user/its-creator1036/comments/1n4xbv2/i_researched_best_coffee_grinders_under_500_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) stood out to me. It's very consistent for pour over, easy to use with timed dosing and baratza support and parts availability make it reliable long term. Its also handle espresso well enough with fresh beans, and what impressed me most was it solid build quality and user friendly design. Honestly, it felt more practical than a lot of pricier grinders i came across.
I suggest the Baratza Virtuoso+ It's as good as the Ode2, if not better. And it's considerably cheaper. It's also much easier to clean and produces far fewer fines; basically zero if you give the beans a spritz of water. Better customer service as well.
I'd look at the Baratza Virtuoso+. I think it's superior to the Ode2, at least for brewed coffee, and it's much cheaper. It's also much easier to clean. Baratza support is clearly better, too.
For brewed coffee you won't do better than the Baratza Virtuoso+. It's cheaper and superior than most brew grinders. Actually, you could upgrade the Encore to the M2 burrs and turn it into an almost-virtuoso.
That's what i have and use the timer all the time
