I have the stripped down Eureka Mignon Facile and only use it for espresso. I love it and does exactly what I need it to do and nothing more. I'm probably not as hardcore as you because IDGAF about burr sizes but if you're looking for a well priced grinder that just grinds coffee well. I really recommend it.
The 1Zpresso K Ultra absolutely changed everything for the better. I had an electric grinder the Eureka Mignon Facile which is more expensive than the K ultra however it was very inconsistent. I definitely recommend something from 1Zpresso. I use my K Ultra for pour over and espresso. It excels at both, however you can probably find something cheaper from them that’s more for pour over.
I considered that grinder. Although it seemed fine, I’m happy I spent $100 more for the eureka Mignon facile. You could get a Gaggia Classic pro for that money and should consider it I personally wouldn’t buy an espresso machine or grinder on Amazon. Check out whole latte love if in the USA or the home baristas if somewhere else.
I think it’s worth it! Trust me. I’ve been making espresso for 3 years and never regret buying a Facile, the lowest end eureka mignon. I use it every day. Every day I hear someone complain that their breville grinder cannot grind fine enough for their espresso. A lot depends on roast level so I’m sure it works for some espresso depending on roast level. But it’s totally wasted money if you buy it can’t easily get a good shot. I would look at manual hand grinders if you can’t get a stepless flat burr grinder. Take a look at the DF54 as well. It’s a Chinese grinder like the Zero 55s but can grind fine enough for espresso. The home baristas in the UK are good: https://www.thehomebaristas.co.uk/coffee-grinders/df54-coffee-grinder
Eureka Facile owner here, single-dose modded. SUCKS for coffee, but grinds great espresso. For coffee, I just use a Timemore Chestnut v2 and my Clever Dripper. Don't discount good manual hand grinders! Kinggrinder and Timemore make good, fast/easy, and relatively inexpensive models to work with.
Will it be just for espresso or other methods? If espresso and budget allows I would suggest either stepping up to the Eureka Facile (incorporates quieting features from higher level grinders) or looking for a Eureka second hand. People often get the itch to upgrade quality grinders long before there’s a function concern. I routinely see Specialita models for about $300-350 in my area. https://www.wholelattelove.com/collections/eureka-mignon/products/eureka-mignon-facile-espresso-grinder?variant=32966051037238
Mignon Facile was pretty quiet for its class!
I have a Breville Duo Temp Pro and a Eureka Facile grinder. Cost around $900 and I've been using this set up daily for 4.5 years. Breville also has a slightly smaller espresso machine that's often recommended! She will also benefit from having a food scale to measure out her coffee beans - but a cheap one from Amazon does the job.
I have a Gaggia classic, no mods and a facile eureka grinder. I get consistently excellent espresso out of it.
I'm not a gearhead, but I got myself the Facile (their lowest-end model, as far as I know) and I love it. Very quiet, grinds more than well enough for me, easy to use, small, and most importantly for me, **quiet**. (I also got a third-party single dose hopper with bellows which improved it a lot for me. Will probably also get one of the big adjustment knobs eventually, though I never change mine as I pretty much always use the same beans.)
My usual budget machine post is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/espresso/comments/1pemyi9/comment/nshft26/ But I'll extrapolate some algebra into levels and see what the sub thinks. Each step represents an improvement in both ease and quality/taste, from cheapest to decent cheap: 1. $170 = 1Zpresso Q Air Manual hand grinder ($70) + Casabrews 3700 ($100) 2. $300 = Baratza ESP ($200) + Casabrews 3700 ($100) 3. $350 = MiiCoffee/Turin DF54 ($250) + Casabrews 3700 ($100) 4. $480 = MiiCoffee/Turin DF54 ($250) + De'Longhi Dedica ($230) 5. $550 = MiiCoffee/Turin DF54 ($250) + Breville Bambino ($300) 6. $650 = Eureka Mignon Facile/Zero ($350) + Breville Bambino ($300) 7. $850 = Eureka Mignon Facile/Zero ($350) + Breville Bambino Plus ($500) My opinion is that ***grinder*** is more important, but you need at least the Baratza ESP for an electric, so go with a hand grinder below that. The DF54 gets slightly better ratings, so the extra $50 is probably worth it. Not perfect, a fraction slow, a bit of retention, a little loud, not too strong. But good enough grinding until you can get up to a Eureka Mignon (my personal preference) or other decent options into that $500 range. For ***machine*** I've seen a number of good reviews for that super cheap Casabrews, basically a throw away for as long as it lasts, but many say you can spend more and get less. Lance reviewed the HiBrew with decent marks for ultra-cheap, Dedicas are very popular, and I like my Bambino Plus as end game until I have money to burn for a La Marzocco Linea Mini. ;) I'll be curious about what people would swap in and out based on experience. EDIT: I updated some prices from Christmas sales, none are as cheap now. Note all these electric machines prices regularly swing throughout the year and can be found cheaper on sale or refurbished, and I usually wait and/or take that risk.
