There’s no difference in performance with the plug-in version vs the battery powered version. The battery life and capacity is substantial as well—it’s not uncommon to go a month or longer without needing to recharge. Going with a battery operated version greatly increases your placement options. Plus the A4Z is battery only—there is no plug-in version, so you automatically rule out arguably the best pourover grinder in the Femobook line. If you are going with a plug-in Femobook, the only model that makes sense IMHO is the A68.
You might wanna look into the Femobook A68. Wouldnt really recommend the Lagom P80 for med-dark roast (even though it’s a lovely machine).
I‘d take a Niche/Femobook over a Varia/DF64 tbh. Can‘t really talk on the VS6 but they had quality issues on their VS3/VS4 I really wouldnt wanna deal with - looks cool, but possible cost savings on the insides at least on their cheaper stuff. Edit: if your „occasionally lighter“ bean choice develops to a „mostly lighter“ over time, a Lagom could make sense tho (overread that part at first)
I have tasted the A4Z side by side with the A68 - and the A4Z is wildly superior to the A68 in terms of cup clarity, flavor separation, flavor panorama, finish and acidity peak and up front zing. The A68 is a very nice espresso grinder, than can produce nice cups of pour over - that are more akin to a K6. The A68 is nice, but I personally couldn’t live with it as a daily for pour over.
I have femobook a68. wonderful easy to use
So if I would have to buy a grinder right now for under 1K, I would probably get the Lagom Casa. It's said to be very similar to my I200D Philos burrs with less retention and a much smaller footprint. Just a weaker motor. Or the Femobook A68. The Femobook seems super nice and really well engineered, if you can live with that ass ugly Femobook Logo on top. When I was shopping for the Philos, it was between it, the Casa and the Femobook A68. Decided for the Philos because I got it from a store at a discount.
I'm a big fan of the Femobook A68.
As the other poster mentioned a C40 or K-Ultra are great blendy grinders, that can also do espresso if you ever have the need to grind that fine in the future. For the flat burr electric side, maybe Timemore 064, or 078 if you can stretch the budget. It's a nice balance of blendy and some clarity. The Ode 2 is a fine grinder, but it's not a great value proposition due to its age. The Lagom Casa is an excellent conical grinder, you can also consider the Femobook A5, or 68 depending on budget for higher quality conicals.
Femobook A68 So underrated, it can do any kind of roast so freaking well. Also it constistancy is really good.
The Femobook A68 sounds like the perfect fit. Does great espresso and good pourover. An eu based seller for Femobook would be Kofio.
