I suggest an alternative that is much closer in price to the Encore: the [KitchenAid KCG8433, on sale for $159.95 at Williams-Sonoma](https://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/kitchenaid-burr-coffee-grinder/?catalogId=79&sku=7772675&cm_ven=PLA&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=Electrics%20%3E%20Coffee%20%26%20Espresso%20Grinders&cm_ite=7772675_14571727833_pla-1418851111101&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=14571727833&gbraid=0AAAAADrs9cGYe76Sy1GVKlAE0BDQbpHgN&gclid=Cj0KCQjw9JLHBhC-ARIsAK4PhcpwvNgz294gDI3lTqNVGfRBKrcVnqK0Z7EpWifbR3K0M_PY_kv5HJsaAidqEALw_wcB). I have this grinder, and it's outstanding for drip coffee. It's as quiet as any electric grinder can be, and the noise it does make is lower in pitch vs other electric grinder. The grind quality is excellent--easily on par with the Encore. It's well-built, and has an effective anti-static catch cup as well. Very easy to use. 😊

I like to use the KitchenAid KCG8433 I recommended previously and this [MOKKOM conical grinder w/ built-in Bluetooth scale, on sale for $106 on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/MOKKOM-Removable-Bluetooth-Connectivity-Anti-static/dp/B0D1C4PF2L/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=1M25WT4JDHIF0&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.sbGhPteexD4GarhWRMf7-UE7pQjdn16WKJAy066QKueFWD6HE6KVZptmz_nqflyc0XntsOpEfP8nPQoL_q6i3_DWTygRX-2GwLhl0kQ_68rA9j774H-8PLJuHnIdokbSPCLqOJ-Ee6Zin_vQAtXyrUgTgTgSeHlFYsw5g6QrbG5UKTJwmIJzu6NJ7LWKGG2ar1wPPXMSs4wO7HiOn1ZnR7h_1cMc_dO-S2zv3lArWNLVwkO2P9MdUAtD1bRIN4uDVwl7bAfEr9C_h09__IXUawBxLUDwIxlpi1CnfbGUPWc.nJKb_TCaUkNK0bwYHLeuH5hgTOiUF4h7mchlpic4Qxg&dib_tag=se&keywords=mokkom+coffee+grinder&qid=1759920175&sprefix=Mokko%2Caps%2C121&sr=8-2-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1). The MOKKOM is also excellent—especially for the price. The ability to grind by weight is super convenient if you keep the hopper filled. The controls are easy and intuitive, and the LED screen is bright and easy to read. The grind quality is very good—on par with the Encore and KitchenAid. It’s louder and higher pitched than the KitchenAid, however. The KitchenAid has better overall build quality, though the MOKKOM is nicely built where it counts (body is all metal). It also has a larger hopper and catch cup than the MOKKOM. The anti-static is more effective with the KitchenAid, and it’s less messy—probably the least messiest electric grinder I’ve used. And KitchenAid is obviously the bigger and more well-known brand, with an established reputation for quality. The KitchenAid doesn’t get as much attention from coffee enthusiasts because KitchenAid isn’t a “coffee brand”. But it’s an excellent grinder at its price point, and a better overall choice than the Encore IMHO. You can’t go wrong with either grinder, IMHO. I recommended the KitchenAid first because it’s an established brand and it’s available from multiple vendors. Most importantly, I recommended the KitchenAid because it’s the quietest electric grinder I’ve ever used—you have an infant that you don’t want to wake when grinding coffee. The MOKKOM is available only on Amazon, to the best of my knowledge.

If you want something simple and entry level that works well with a drip machine, I like this [MOKKOM conical grinder w/ Bluetooth scale for $129 before $10 coupon](https://www.amazon.com/MOKKOM-Removable-Bluetooth-Connectivity-Anti-static/dp/B0DLG3N57P/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=RBCBBKY7L82C&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.WszLcK1bDO54WO3y0V9Bl5kh2bARjNZabhxyoDacpeTKrzWN9Lbz8hNClnZDSM0qSgkfczhVYx11akwxHPhiXE7CCSLVKpG3sNTk4mvTkVc4ayq1NFPuW86UI023bSWqbtj9Ik_h4dQx37T6r_vGt6zI-mbHaLvzSg4f5jJ6_y26WMAQfQV0Y8yotn0YfMQfk3rhCMld5YSvnk7_fCCymfQ4DFIEBdeqeqFlAwb4oddQgpL01TBPWDJSlQOWH6lOx_0bMdmh8vBhk8i7KD8pg-t0GUDonzTp4p7yN5VVjZk.GAlMvVtE8J1-2iREgL7WwujiomtfnSsZlYNUh1r9NEQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=mokkom+coffee+grinder&qid=1752195441&sprefix=%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-2-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1). The aesthetics are solid IMHO, and the grind quality is quite good, especially for use with a drip machine—I have one. The Bluetooth scale is what makes this grinder awesome at the price point—it enables you to grind by weight, which is super convenient for daily use for batch brewing. It’s not that loud, either. Another grinder I like for pairing with a drip machine is the [KitchenAid KCG8433](https://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KCG8433BM-Coffee-Grinder-Black/dp/B08JH6K5PY/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3R46XK5YDNI6A&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hHKyi-XGgrtq1Sl85_GPvUPPTNaAUEz811fmAitMd7H8T7L03lKdmjjA8OYbAsczY7Pk445t2TOEuYH9nRrl0mycCDtY8YIeQ50O6MpJ4TYERxXXsNWWb5pmEld2ZeK3nFELoGLltK5CKAjvBGm0Y36OU8SnrqyHR2GFoLMN5pppQ-5C8fWWhLuQGEpQD_gZdOZOKHJKFyFUrQF5J7X2pyePRzPoa35CicUwnajSKoIAcQ0LxbB3ilF2RVEUwxO_H2nyjP5XtgKJkDmEMPRcwdNi-fSIqhJeTna-sALvYh0.jSMvxTxA0XaLPQvAMDtC07GeL05K5TldkYxs7jIr5b8&dib_tag=se&keywords=kitchen%2Baid%2Bcoffee%2Bbean%2Bgrinder&qid=1756347195&sprefix=Kitchen%2Bcoffee%2Bgrinder%2Caps%2C129&sr=8-1&th=1). Excellent build quality for the price, being a KitchenAid. Very quiet, with nice workflow. Grind quality is also quite good. Very easy to clean and maintain, anti-static performance is very good. I have this grinder too. I prefer these over the Breville and Opus. Baratza Encore is obviously a good reliable choice in this price range, but if you don’t like the aesthetics and noise, then it’s not for you.

I like the [KitchenAid KCG8433 for $159 on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KCG8433BM-Coffee-Grinder-Black/dp/B08JH6K5PY/ref=sr_1_1?crid=WXWLK7N96TJ7&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hHKyi-XGgrtq1Sl85_GPvVLDjsaBXF--j1gVT_k_wz_FHWq1VlYwEfGlU3JcyllHhuRUw-U_zOKQraINyXFKS4AemsYFE7lkznvzPM4rmOoE3IaI2khQk2coQll9fO7Eb5ymzGNJgEYFWDNB4hlDhUV2etTAwYyUZvPKEqJPZEuhtlfxtjNjKNZZikyLD5YXbZC2DL-DlySeh0IuSkHVTTUDdQ9ScaTYHRuniEvcgduUF_XIodk7ouA36sgm6-wx0b00Nu_EQapadhgUNcrwCFxDW7icZvDXzLyQNI3H9uM.4yKM7CFDSHHfsdoHChM_Wqd1ecM_Wh6FTaSGXQcIeLs&dib_tag=se&keywords=kitchen%2Baid%2Bcoffee%2Bbean%2Bgrinder&qid=1756223395&sprefix=kitchen%2Baid%2Bco%2Caps%2C104&sr=8-1&th=1) for your use case. It has very good grind quality, and is great for batch brewing with drip machines. Very quiet for an electric grinder, easy to clean and maintain, and has good workflow and ergonomics. Very good anti-static performance. And it's a Kitchen Aid, which means KitchenAid build quality and reliability. I have this grinder myself, as well as several other grinders.

Under $250, you would be looking at a Baratza Encore ESP, DF54, or KitchenAid KCG8433. The Baratza is an excellent choice for reliability and easy repairability. Parts are readily available, and it’s a good grinder.  The DF54 is the most popular coffee nerd/enthusiast choice. It’s a flat burr grinder with excellent performance and the ability to change the burrs. It’s basically a Chinese OEM grinder, however—so support is more dependent upon the retailer. The KitchenAid KCG8433 is very nice at $179–often goes on sale for $139. It’s the least expensive of these three choices. KitchenAid’s track record as a company speaks for itself. I personally own the KitchenAid (along with several other grinders)—I like the ergonomics and it does a nice job. It’s a quiet grinder and very good for the money, if not necessarily a popular coffee nerd choice. There are great choices if you expand the budget, but it’s really easy to go down that rabbit hole. Also, just get a separate scale. I’ve seen only one grinder in this price range that grinds by weight—a $129 grinder on Amazon by a company named Mokkom. FWIW, it seems to get good ratings on Amazon, but clearly would be a bit of a gamble. I’m comfortable with making that kind of gamble, but not everyone is.

It can, especially if the inner burr adjustment is utilized along with the main grind dial. The Encore ESP will be better for espresso, as it has more range at that end with 20 grind settings specifically for espresso. However, the KitchenAid has more range overall with more than 70 grind settings, not including the inner burr fine adjustment settings. This is not unlike the Fellow Opus, which is another option that I did not mention. The KitchenAid also comes with a portafilter holder for grinding directly into a portafilter, whereas the Encore ESP does not. The anti-static catch cup on the KitchenAid works very well too. There obviously is no perfect grinder at this price point, or any price point for that matter. Which is why I presented these 3 choices—the OP then can decide which mix of features works best and which weaknesses they can live with. The DF54 probably offers the most raw performance, but has the most day-to-day usability quirks from what I can see. The Encore ESP will offer very good espresso performance, but is a bit basic in its features and day-to-day use. The KitchenAid, IMHO, has the best ergonomics for daily use, especially for beginners and regular coffee drinkers. It’s pick your poison. OP, honestly, you may want to consider having two grinders—one for espresso, and one for everything else. Even if a grinder can handle both filter and espresso well, it’s a pain switching back and forth between them—especially for redialing your espresso grind. Many coffee enthusiasts have a two grinder setup.

I totally skimmed over the fact that the OP has a Virtuoso. OP, you really won't get your money's worth in terms of improvement in the cup if you drink only medium to dark roasts. Honestly, an Ode Gen 2 or Timemore 078 would be a bit of a waste, and neither company has Baratza's reputation for reliability and service. Your Virtuoso might just need a bit of TLC. Or you could just get one of the grinders I recommended. If you are really itching to spend some dough, maybe order the new [Lagom Casa](https://www.option-o.com/shop/p/lagom-casa?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22282491509&gbraid=0AAAAArBqeyLITcQFGPZ35mGhGSVsTsA-d&gclid=Cj0KCQjwndHEBhDVARIsAGh0g3DQBDbUkpnQb8lkTIRxKLOIv2jvhqr-kqRp0bPOqXwZnOn45dBSWs4aAhFqEALw_wcB) or [Femobook A68](https://femobook.myshopify.com/products/a68-electric-coffee-grinder).

If you drink only medium to dark roasts, you don't need to spend anywhere near $1,000. Just get a Baratza Encore ESP, SK-40, or KitchenAid KCG8433 and call it a day. Use the saved money for good coffee.

My pleasure! 😊 I've owned both the Ninja CE251 and the Bonavita Enthusiast--they both make great coffee! The Bonavita is fast and more compact than the Ninja. I also own that KitchenAid grinder--it's a great grinder, especially for the $99 price of the certified refurbished model. It's better than a Baratza Encore, IMHO--superior workflow and great anti-static performance. Grind quality is very good. It's just a question if you want a really nice SCA brewer now and better grinder later, or a good brewer (Ninja) and better grinder now.

Hi everyone. In the intense search for the best option for my home pour overs and brewing. I’m in Mexico so the most fancy and expensive grinders are not available or just to away from my budget. I currently work with a kitchen aid KCG8433BM whic works fine with mid to dark roast but lighter roast it’s been kind of hard to dial in. It doesn’t give a lot of problems with retention. Also I’ve notice some fines going trough to my final dose so THIS IS MY MAIN PROBLEM. I’m looking for something that leaves the least fines and delivers a lot of consistency in the ground size. The main options I have in my local gear dealers are baratza encore, baratza encore ESP, fellow opus, fellow ode gen 2, miicoffee DF54, micoffe DF64 II and Timemore 064S (this one is the most expensive). Fancy burrs out of budget right now, just trying to make the most with my current budget. Maybe in a future I would aim for a nich but can’t currently. Thank you for your advice really much. I would really appreciate that

I second this! Love my KitchenAid. looks great, is quiet… makes delicious coffee, is fast, cup is antistatic.. list goes on. love the design too of the hopper coming off the top. only negative thing is that might not be good enough for espresso. but ion make espresso so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have the kitchen aid bur grinder and it does exactly what you describe- I’ve been using mine daily for close to 2 years- grind and amount desired is all set and we rarely change it. I love how quiet it is It does need to be cleaned every few months if you start getting static buildup. The oil from the beans ends up coating the static discharge pins and you need a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab t clean it

Bought a stilosa for $85 from Delonghi and a $100 KitchenAid grinder for my first setup and it still is glorious a couple years later. This machine looks very similar to mine. I freaked out about the grinder due to this sub, but learned later that any machine with pressurized baskets (such as this one) has a lot of flexibility there. I think you could save on the grinder for sure but I do like my KitchenAid
