I usually just read here; not contribute. But I also went the 'buy once, cry once' route, so here's my thoughts. I stretched my budget a lot and bought a Option-O P64 and a Decent DE1 Pro. A Lelit was my second choice. I am extremely happy with both my P64 and my Decent. Counter space was a consideration for me. Whatever you choose, be aware that every setup has a learning curve. Be patient. Your first dozen or so espressos might be mediocre. But after that your worse espresso will be very very good. Good luck. And enjoy
I have a lagom p64 and think it is fantastic. I would get a p80 if I were in the market now.
I have a P64 with SSP MP and I'm very happy with the result. I think it's my end game grinder and killed my desire to upgrade further. Might try another burr set in the future but that's way less costly than switching up grinders.
Linea mini with an option-o p64 with the mizen Omni burrs. Considering SSP HU burrs for purely espresso and a 1zpresso for pour overs
The Niche is fine, but i know given it's age and limitations, that i can get more out of my P64 (with changed burrs). My plan is to keep the P64, change burrs, and use that as my milk grinder. New grinder will do everything else, running two burr sets. I know that won't make sense to some, and that's okay, but for me, it's where i'm looking to go. If i cannot find a grinder that fits my needs, i am fine with keeping the Niche going for another couple of years.
Bite the bullet and get the Lagom P64
I love my lagom p64
That was my exact situation. Ended up with the P64 and haven’t regretted it at all.
P64 it’s dead silent. Fast and easy adjustments
It is the internet, with a global reach. Many of the subs and forums get dominated by people who need to tell why they are right and you are wrong. Having owned a DF64 and found it to be one of the loudest, most unreliable grinders backed with no customer service, I have had in 40 years, I would say well done you dodged a bullet. Anything by Option O gets my vote (I have a P64 now, owned a Mini and tested a Casa and P100). The cheaper Eurekas I like as hopper fed grinders, but not single dose (the adjustment is not consistent). Niche Zero (I have one) is bombproof, quiet and lovely adjustment. However, more of a traditional darker to medium roast grinder. A used Mazzer SJ or Mini would be bombproof and a good find.
I have had dual grinders, one flat burrs and one conical, for many years, for exactly the same reasons as you suggest: espresso and pour-over. I currently have an Option-O P64 (I believe now discontinued) and a Niche Zero. However, I can't tell you it has really been worth it and it is the 'best' thing to do. It has been, and is, a fun indulgence, but I could have easily 'survived' with just a flat grinder. If you want to go for it, do it - we only live once. :-)
I have had many good grinders over the years, right now I have two: a Niche Zero and an Option-O P64. They are really good for my espresso, pour-over and Aeropress. I would happily recommend both.
