I 2nd that. I got the one with the scale used on eBay. It's been great. Baratzas are great too. Better reliability and fix ability. But they are also a lot noisier.

I found the OXO grinder with integrated scale for a steal on eBay and that's been pretty nice for my first conical grinder!

I recently got into cold brew and bought a k6 hand grinder. It works great but be prepared to spend a lot of time grinding beans. Last night I ordered the oxo electric and I just used it this morning. It worked well for coarse and saved me a ton of time.

I'm really happy with my OXO grinder. Clean it out regularly and no issues to date. I've had it for 6-7 years now. Fresh coffee works much better. Grocery store stuff has some oils on it and just means I have to clean out the grinder more regularly.

I second the Oxo conical burr. I got one for my hot coffee drinking girlfriend a few years ago and she loves it. She got me into cold brew and bought one for me. It died suddenly and Oxo customer service was excellent. I'm on my second one and it still rocks.

I also recommend the oxo burr grinder. Had mine for a few years and it’s consistent for coarse grind. I’ve even been grinding fine for the new OXO rapid brewer and it’s doing great with consistent grinds on low settings like 2.

Baratza Encore ($150, preferred) or Capresso Infinity (cheaper - literally $70 on sale right now with CAP30 code so half the price of Encore, almost as good as Encore and a huge jump over anything cheaper, just much less user-serviceable). OXO Brew ($100) is also a good bet, just not sure it's worth that much more than Capresso if money is super tight.

Do you have a price range in mind? You can technically “get away” with anything, but the quality of the cup will suffer up to a certain point. I liked my OXO burr grinder for pour over, filter, and aeropress. They go on sale for $80 a lot. Not perfect but made very serviceable cups. I swapped it out for a Baratza encore at some point, and didn’t think it was significantly better to be honest. Grind consistency was definitely a bit nicer, but not as big of a step I was hoping for. HOWEVER, their customer service is outstanding, so might be worth spending the extra coin just for that. I have seen them for $120 before but usually they are $150. Of course now if fallen down the rabbit hole and both of those are long gone… hah.

OXO - better button placement, timer is kinda nice if you aren’t weighing things. - faster - quieter - easier to assemble / disassemble for cleaning. Baratza - lower retention than OXO (still a lot!) - somewhat better grind quality. - easier to repair / get spare parts for - upgradable to better burrs Honestly, for someone not discerning, I’d get the OXO. I honestly think it’s nicer to live with, and I thought the taste was going to change more than it did. The leap from pre-ground or a blade grinder to the OXO is significant, and the step from the OXO to the encore is small. Put it this way: I had my Baratza for less than a month before I got sick of it and upgraded to a DF64 g2. Now with the DF54 / sk40 / dk40 out, I wouldn’t buy an encore again. For an additional $50-80 over the encore you are going from a reliable but kinda just ok electric grinder to MUCH nicer machines. The encore isn’t a bad grinder, by any means. 15, heck even 3 years ago it was the king of the market. But the market has caught up, and we now have a ton of options that IMO render the Baratza as somewhat outdated.

Hi - I'm at same place as you - Bambino Plus for 6 months and OXO. Using fairly fresh medium roast beans, I have to go <2.0 - rn I'm at 1.3. This seems to work for me and tastes pretty good. Its just made me realize I need a really good grinder - and that what I thought was a quick am espresso has become an obsession and probably expensive. But I love it! I had to breakout Excel and start tracking grind size, grams in, grams out and time. whew!

Depending on how dark your roast is, you will need to be at the very finest end of that grinder. I tried using one with a bambino for a bit before my espresso grinder arrived. I found crazy retention and uneven grind to be the biggest frustrations.

I tried the same combination…… Grind size around 3 or 4 started giving decent results but the shoot was getting blocked intermittently. From several posts, It felt like the oxo is good for pour over coffees. I switched to a better grinder; fellow opus…… that became a game changer. Taste got better and so did the extraction quality. I suggest you switch to a grinder that is made for espresso……

Check out the OXO brand, you can set different times and grind size and just click go! I rarely change my brew method so it makes it a simple thing with my fellow stagg. 9:30 am rolls around kettle heats water to my temp. Press one button on grinder, and I have the need amount of beans. Start my process.

I like my Oxo burr grinder. Have had it since January. It's my 1st burr grinder and I'm happy with it. But if I was getting a new one I'd get a Baratza and use a scale. No need for timer settings or grinders that tell you how many cups worthits grinder ding. Just weight and grind

I second the OXO grinder, but like others have said, keep it clean and it’ll do just fine. Even then, the worst thing that happens when it needs cleaning is you’ll hear the grinder spin with nothing in it so you just have to clean it out and go again.

I have the Oxo grinder and it works great, but I wish I dropped more $ for the Encore because it’s repairable so it will probably last longer (part of the reason why I bought a moccamaster in the first place). As far as I understand, the grinder bits will wear out down the road. Trying to move away from disposable cheap appliances to ones that are repairable where I can.

I also have the OXO, and have a question. What settings are you all using? I've been trying to dial in a Peet's medium roast (Nicaragua Las Hermanas, closer to dark roast, really), and it's been coming out very bitter. I have it all the way over to course setting, still bitter. Using 55 grams for 8 cups, Arrowhead water. This morning will be using Stumptown Holler Mtn.

So I’m gonna go sideways here for a second. Honestly just get a grinder that can do large quantities. Manual burr grinders are a pain and overkill. If you’re going to be brewing larger batches, then definitely get an electric grinder. That being said I don’t believe you need grinder more than $50 at all. The Oxo may serve you best and they are dozens on FB marketplace (at least in my location.) You just need something that will grind coarse. My recommendation for a quality brew is consistency. Get the same bean every time while learning. Local coffee shops that roast their own beans would be a good bet. I personally get dark roast with chocolate and hazelnut notes. Measure. Measure. Measure. You will be working with ratios and be consistent. I like 200 grams of coffee to 64 oz of water. When serving it’s 50/50 coffee to water with a bit of milk. So I would literally write what you do down so you can replicate it. Lastly it’s important to note that cold brew tastes better after being in the fridge 24 hours after brewing. Even better after 48 hours. Getting good at ratios and replicating your craft is what will make a great brew. Once you get that down and are able to splurge a bit more with a grinder.. you will then be able to mess around with different coarseness. For now, cheaper grinder and the coarsest setting. Anyone pushing an encore for only cold brew is nuts. I got an encore esp recently because I still want to brew cold brew in large batches AND grind for espresso. That being said if FB marketplace Gods bless you then get one lol

I've got that grinder! On my not-real-espresso machine (Mr. Coffee cappuccino maker), about a 2.5 - 3.2 worked ok. As soon as I got a real machine that could pump out 9 bars of pressure, that grinder started only being good for pour-over.

Your coffee tastes acidic as the OXO is not grinding fine enough, likely underacting the coffee. I had this same OXO grinder when I started my journey and it was not fine enough at setting one. You will need to upgrade to a specific espresso grinder like Baratza ESP, DF54 (my rec) or Kinggrinder K6 (manual affordable option)

I also have this grinder and keep it as backup to my ode 2. I single dosed, used RDT, and always picked up and banged the side of the grinder a few times for no retention. If I didn't find the ode 2 on a major sale, I'd still be using the OXO.

I have this oxo grinder and I keep it around to grind larger quantities of beans for batch brews these days. I usually hover around numbers 8-11 for a solid pourover grind and shake the finished ground coffee in the catch cup to reduce static and minimize fines migration. Also, ignore the grind by time and try to single dose for a most consistent experience! I picked up an 1zpresso k ultra and haven't brewed a pourover with the oxo after comparing the two cups side by side. With that said, the oxo is a great electric grinder for the price and you can learn a lot about your brew preferences as well as being able to experiment with different brew methods. I'd recommend trying not to fall into the endless upgrade path and instead experiment with this grinder, brewing the best cup you can. Hone your skills so when you're finally ready to get something better down the line, you'll be able to pull the most out of that upgrade too!

I had total weirdness with an Opus I bought in early September. Yeah, retention is frustrating - at least a gram unless I bang the heck out of the top and use the lid as a bellow. But my issues with it are much bigger. I had a Oxo conical grinder for pourovers and a Sette 30 for espresso. The Oxo wasn't cutting it so decided to believe the marketing that the Opus could do from espresso to cold brew. Out of the box, first thing I tried was espresso. They say 1-2 setting for espresso. Nope - got up to 3 before I could get a decent 30 second pull but I was happy with it. Moved over to pourover. Long story short, got all the way to the 11 setting and no joy - 20g/300ml v60 was taking almost 5 minutes. I changed the inner ring (after hours and hours of research to figure it out) and I'm at a "virtual" 12 setting (inner ring/outer ring combo) and I'm getting 4:15 pourovers. Still not great. They send me an outer burr, convinced this is the issue. No joy. Then a new Opus. No change. I decide to send the "new" unit back because I paid for it (support was going to refund me when I returned my original one) and put my old one back in service. Reset the inner ring back to the coarsest setting and viola, suddenly when I'm at 12, I'm getting just over 3 minute pourovers. But this is still the coarsest setting and no way I could get a cold brew or French press grind out of it. Today, I tried espresso. Dialed it all the way down to 1 (with the inner ring at coarse, so really like it's at 2) and my shots are taking 10-12 seconds. WTH? So maybe some user error but I doubt it b/c of all the adjusting, cleaning burrs I've done over 2 months. I've been playing with the inner ring, outer ring with espresso and pourover and it's clear I can't get any more coarse than just good enough for a pourover. So it's going back to Fellow for a refund as soon as the DF54 I bought on Friday arrives.
