I have the OXO with the built in scale model and have enjoyed it as my first electric grinder, knowing fully well it's not going to give me the "perfect" grind. But, being that I've never had any other, my taste buds dont even know what I'm missing out on so it doesn't bother me!

I 2nd that. I got the one with the scale used on eBay. It's been great. Baratzas are great too. Better reliability and fix ability. But they are also a lot noisier.

I have the Oxo grinder and it works great, but I wish I dropped more $ for the Encore because it’s repairable so it will probably last longer (part of the reason why I bought a moccamaster in the first place). As far as I understand, the grinder bits will wear out down the road. Trying to move away from disposable cheap appliances to ones that are repairable where I can.

I also recommend the oxo burr grinder. Had mine for a few years and it’s consistent for coarse grind. I’ve even been grinding fine for the new OXO rapid brewer and it’s doing great with consistent grinds on low settings like 2.

I took the same path. The k6 smokes the oxo. The only advantage the oxo has is that you can grind a whole bag at once, but you don't often need to do that if you drink pourover.

So I’m gonna go sideways here for a second. Honestly just get a grinder that can do large quantities. Manual burr grinders are a pain and overkill. If you’re going to be brewing larger batches, then definitely get an electric grinder. That being said I don’t believe you need grinder more than $50 at all. The Oxo may serve you best and they are dozens on FB marketplace (at least in my location.) You just need something that will grind coarse. My recommendation for a quality brew is consistency. Get the same bean every time while learning. Local coffee shops that roast their own beans would be a good bet. I personally get dark roast with chocolate and hazelnut notes. Measure. Measure. Measure. You will be working with ratios and be consistent. I like 200 grams of coffee to 64 oz of water. When serving it’s 50/50 coffee to water with a bit of milk. So I would literally write what you do down so you can replicate it. Lastly it’s important to note that cold brew tastes better after being in the fridge 24 hours after brewing. Even better after 48 hours. Getting good at ratios and replicating your craft is what will make a great brew. Once you get that down and are able to splurge a bit more with a grinder.. you will then be able to mess around with different coarseness. For now, cheaper grinder and the coarsest setting. Anyone pushing an encore for only cold brew is nuts. I got an encore esp recently because I still want to brew cold brew in large batches AND grind for espresso. That being said if FB marketplace Gods bless you then get one lol

Oxo burr grinder does well and is under $100. Is it the best? No. But it’s close to the encore etc and half the price.

I do not have any experience with the Baratza, but I got the OXO conical burr as a gift. It’s still the only grinder I have and honestly, I think it’s great. I get very good tasting cups out of it, it’s easy to clean and for filter coffee the grind settings are great. For me, the biggest cons is how much static it builds up, which can lead to some clumps in the coffee. And the ground catcher doesn’t lock in. All that said, I am just starting out my coffee journey and will be buying a ZP6 by the end of the year. But I think to start, the price point for an electric grinder is hard to beat.

I upgraded to a burr grinder a few months ago, an OXO Conical Burr grinder. It made a huge difference for me. Every morning I grind just enough for 2 cups of coffee. I also learned how to make my own cold brew. The beauty of a burr grinder is being able to adjust for different brewing methods. My grinder cost $100, but I got it on sale for 25% off. I'd say, if you make only one type of coffee and you've been pleased with your current system, just stick with what works for you. But should you ever need to replace your grinder, maybe consider investing in a burr grinder.

Get a used grinder on marketplace for sure. Oxo and Breville are the bare minimum, but if you see a sub-$50 Baratza, that’s even better. If you don’t want to then start buying more beans, just resell it yourself when you finish the bag. Anything lower-end than those and I wouldn’t bother. Blade grinders ruin beans, as do super cheap “burr” grinders like Cuisinart and Shardor. As far as storage, if you brew coffee daily, I’d just keep them in a resealable container (with a “burp” valve if possible; old bags from previous coffee purchases should work) in a cool and dry place.

I started with the OXO and got a Kingrinder K6 hand grinder a year ago. I get much more flavor out of the K6 than the OXO for sure. Noticeably different.

A burr grinder actually grinds the beans through crushing through wheels rather than chops them up with blades like the way less expensive grinders do. I agree with other poster that it makes a huge difference in the oil extraction and final resulting cup. I wasn’t able to shell out $200+ on a Baratza either, but got the OXO conical burr wirecutter recommends for about $70 on sale (normally about $99). I’m loving it! And the 1.25L will get about 42 fluid ounces, so 5.25 American cups or about 4 mugs of coffee depending on your mug size. If you do get the oxo conical burr, I can give you some recommendations for grinder settings- I’ve been experimenting with it all week.

Sure! So as people who know way more about this than me will tell you, the grind size is ultimately going to depend on the type of coffee roast and your preference among many other factors. That said, I use a pretty common medium roast bean. If you like darker or lighter coffee, you may find you need to change the grind size which will in turn change all these numbers. MM recommends a medium to coarse grind, so on my OXO I have found the sweet spot for my particular bean to be 8.1 (one notch past the 8) on the grind size. For that size, here is what I have figured out if you’re aiming for the MM recommended 64g per liter: For each 1/4 L, 10 seconds grind time gives roughly 16 grams. So For 1/2 L, 20 seconds = 32 g; For 3/4 L, 30 seconds = 48 g; For 1 L, 40 seconds (20 sec x 2 pushes) = 64 g; For 1 1/4 L, 50 seconds (25 sec x 2 pushes) = 80 g.

I second the Oxo conical burr. I got one for my hot coffee drinking girlfriend a few years ago and she loves it. She got me into cold brew and bought one for me. It died suddenly and Oxo customer service was excellent. I'm on my second one and it still rocks.

I also have the OXO, and have a question. What settings are you all using? I've been trying to dial in a Peet's medium roast (Nicaragua Las Hermanas, closer to dark roast, really), and it's been coming out very bitter. I have it all the way over to course setting, still bitter. Using 55 grams for 8 cups, Arrowhead water. This morning will be using Stumptown Holler Mtn.

I got a home grinder initially so that my coffee wouldn’t go stale as fast.  Whole beans last longer than preground.  Part of the bonus was, hopefully, that I could buy a larger bag for cheaper and still get good coffee for less money per cup. Then I got better at dialing in my grind size and getting the smoothest flavor I could, so now rather than spending ten dollars per kilo of commodity-grade coffee, I’m happy spending twenty per 300g of specialty coffee. 🤣 For the same money, you’ll get much better grind quality in a hand grinder than you would for electric.  Get a Timemore or 1ZPresso and it’ll rival electric grinders costing double or triple as much.  It’ll take a bit longer, but with the modern class of hand grinders, you’re only looking at maybe 45 seconds for a 3-cup pot without working very hard (which is much better than multiple minutes in a Hario Skerton). In electric grinders, the bare minimum I’d recommend would be an Oxo or a Baratza.  But I’d rather step up to, say, the DF54, Eureka Mignon series, Urbanic, and some others.

I recently got into cold brew and bought a k6 hand grinder. It works great but be prepared to spend a lot of time grinding beans. Last night I ordered the oxo electric and I just used it this morning. It worked well for coarse and saved me a ton of time.

I can't speak for either, but they are major brands, and I assume work as well as you can expect for the price. Cuisinart *($50)*. OXO *($75)*. Cold brew grind size is far more forgiving than other methods, but you will want a burr grinder. I recently upgraded and no longer use my Encore. The burrs may need to be aligned. It's old but has plenty of life. I would have to look it over, and you would have to figure out how to get it to you. If you want it *(free)* send me a chat.

I had the OXO but wanted something better. Upgraded to the K Ultra and was very happy with my decision. I don’t think the OXO made bad cups, but the step up was noticeable. As an added bonus it doesn’t wake the entire house up when I make my first cup of coffee.

> If it’s REALLY something I should look into... It really is. > ... can anyone recommend one that would accommodate a small amount of beans at a time? I don’t want a big hopper to deal with as I’m generally drinking something different every morning Most good grinders, actually. Large hoppers have largely gone out of fashion because a lot of coffee drinkers do exactly this. > ... can anyone recommend one... Depends on your budget. I used the Oxo conical burr grinder for a while, and as a grinder it's a very good cost-to-value ratio. It's not really set up for small quantities of beans, but you can get a bellows thing that really helps. TBH, though, get the Fellow Ode gen 2. New it's become too expensive, but you can find used ones on ebay for not-ridiculous prices. It's just an excellent single-serve grinder. (Or do what I did and get an Ode gen 1 and fit the Gen 2 burrs -- those really are worth it.)

I use a oxo burr grinder, there’s a plastic housing that holds the beans and funnels it into the grinder. but after that it’s all metal. and I use a chemex with a paper lining. I’ll be okay with plastic touching room temp whole beans for a total of $100.

All the popular options already mentioned. I used the Oxo for about a year. Nice enough grind but the timer didn’t deliver the same quantity of grounds each day. I ruled out the KM5 because I didn’t want to stand there with my finger on the button while it worked. Baratza Encore has an on-off switch on the side but still feeds from a hopper — not a big problem mind you, but accuracy would require some weighing. Fellow Ode 2 is set up to grind enough beans for one pot, so I have to weigh before I grind. And the Ode 2 shuts off automatically when the beans are gone. So I picked the Ode 2. Still in its first week, but it’s quiet and delivers some really nice grind for the MM. Your choice will depend on your own workflow. But any of Baratza, Fellow, or Moccamaster will deliver a great grind.

Sounds like the K6 is the winner in the comments. But if you want a budget, beginner friendly electric option, I recommend the Oxo Conical Burr grinder. It was my first grinder I bought for pour overs and it served me well for over two years. It will do the trick if you are just getting into pour overs.

That’s the one. I don’t really do espresso so not concerned about getting down to a uniform powder. I have had it several years and it has been quiet and very reliable. Can’t speak to benefits of the Encore over it. With regard to the timer, I weigh my coffee so I don’t really care about that. Time to grind a specified rate will vary with every bean variety anyway.

I've used both and had just the OXO for years. It's good, but not great. If you think you'll be wanting to sample and try lots of light roasts go with one of the nicer baratzas or the fellow ode or opus IMO. If you just want a solid cup of coffee every day and aren't chasing clarity the OXO will be fine.
