There are a lot of variables that go into choosing a scooter, and a lot of ways to answer your question. The "right" answer isn't as easy as you might think, and might be different for different needs. Things you need to consider: Your weight. The terrain you plan to travel (lots of hills?). The type of weather you expect to experience (rain or constant wind?). Are you comfortable with minor repairs or upgrade like changing a tire or tube, adjusting brakes, replacing brake pads, etc.? How far do you need to travel? There ARE brands that have been around for quite some time and have a generally good reputation. Segway/Ninebot, Inmotion, etc. But, you can have issues with ANY scooter from any brand. Rainy weather will require a proper rating. Hills + a heavy rider might require dual motors. Long journeys will require an adequate battery. The majority of scooters I've owned could be considered "no-name" brands. I've had zero issues. No broken stems, no battery problems. Only great experiences. Of course, I've had to fix flats here and there and replace brake pads. Most parts for most scooters can be found on the manufacturer website or via AliExpress (my preferred source). An electric scooter is my main form of transportation (I don't own a car). But it's also lots of fun. I prefer to buy inexpensive brands (that you won't find talked-up in this forum) that provide exactly what I personally need. I'd rather have two inexpensive scooters than one very expensive scooter. If one breaks down, I've got a backup. If one dies, I've got parts. I have scooters that I use for commuting to work, and scooters for neighborhood riding/shopping. My advice is to watch YouTube videos and find dedicated Facebook groups for brands (if they exist). Learn about motor and battery specs and how they relate to performance. Consider all the variables I mentioned (weight, terrain, weather, etc). In the end, go with your gut and jump-in somewhere. We all started somewhere and we have all learned good and bad lessons and what works and doesn't work for our personal needs. Your first scooter isn't going to be your only or last scooter. It'll be a good opportunity to learn. P.S. When I started, there really wasn't a single option that was legitimately very good. But, my needs were different then too. One of my very early scooters was a GoTrax GXL V1. An absolute dinosaur by today's standards. But, I got it for $198 and got between 7k and 8k miles out of it (probably the most anyone ever got out of that model). It simply wouldn't die. Looking back, I can't believe that I rode that scooter THAT much. Now I have scooters that go three times as fast and three times as far. My point is; we all start somewhere. Have fun and try to make an educated choice that you're happy with.
Honestly, in the low price category, like under 500 for for name brands. I am a huge ausom guy, but heir scooters are great. Also gotrax GXL2 is good too, lasted me 4 years. Till the tire gave out. And my parents made me toss it away
I bought my friends kid a Gotrax Vibe when she was 11. It's slow vs adult scooters, but still seems fast and fun to a child. It's large enough a small adult can still ride it, so your kid won't outgrow it right away unlike some of the other kids scooters that are smaller
I picked up a Gotrax GXL V2 on Marketplace for 170$. The deals are out there.
GoTraxx GXL V2 is foldable for carrying, has an 8 mile range for a 200 lb adult, and can go about 15 mph (faster for smaller people) I saw them on sale for $230 on the website. I had mine for 3 years and gave it to a friend when I got too heavy (quit smoking) and she's still using it to get to work.
Extremely cheap and "higher quality" do not got together here...but for 2.5 miles if you spend $500 you will be all set. Avoid the parts bin temu/amazon crap. It will not last. NIU or ninebot or navee. Either one will be fine for a rather short ride. My job is 6 miles away. At one point I had a go trax and I could get there in like 18 min....i do not recommend go trax though. You best bet is one the "N" brands.
I used to ride a GOTRAX commuter scooter every day, and the biggest problem was how fast everything started rattling and getting loose. The folding mechanism got wobbly pretty quick, and the ride just got rougher and rougher the more I used it. For like casual weekend rides it's totally fine, but for actually commuting on it daily? It didn't hold up nearly as well as I was hoping. The cheap price is why people go for them, but the tradeoff is you end up spending way more time fixing stuff than you really want to !!!
