Just get a Decent DE1. I got one after faffing about using an E61 with flow control, there is no substitute if you want to control every aspect of the shot.
I moved from a Dual Boiler E61 to a DE1XL. There is no way I am going back to a boiler based machine after using the thermoblock. Having water constantly being heated and reheated in a boiler seems very outdated when we have better technology now. The fast heatup time (4 mins from cold) is a total game changer. The DE1 is the most versatile machine in the market. I even use the filter 3.0 attachment to make filter coffee when I can't be bothered to do measured pours manually. It makes a very good cup. I have done so much more with the profiles on the decent than I have ever done with the E61 machine (flow control included). If you are into light roast coffees the DE1 is certainly one of the best in the market to get the best out of them. The tablet makes for some nice quality of life improvements. Brew by weight with a paired bluetooth scale is something I will not live without. Using the Describe Your Espresso plug in and visualizer uploads makes for a very compelling learning tool. I was using a BT group pressure gauge and my scales flow rate and Bean Conqueror to do similar things on my E61. With the Decent this whole thing is more integrated with the machine itself. There are many skins that make the UI as easy as you want or as detailed as you want. For example, the DSx2 skins have a feature where you can setup the weights of your milk pitcher. You set how long it takes to steam a quantity of milk to the temperature you like. For me 200g takes about 38 seconds to steam to 65 Celsius. Once you have all this setup, you place your pitcher in the scale and pour the milk. Press the steam adjust button and it will automatically set the time based on the weight of milk you put in. So if say I am using 160gm of milk, it will reduce the steam time to 30 ish or so seconds so you will hit your temperature and the steam will stop. It will then auto purge once you are done. This way you can focus on texturing the milk and not worry about when you need to stop steaming. Once you are done wipe and hit the stop button and it will purge (it can be set to purge without hitting stop too).
My decent DE1 xl has all the bells and whistles you could ever want, but you can just pick the “classic Italian espresso” profile, tweak the weights (if desired) and voila…never think about it again. If you want to think about it, just pick another profile. You can have as much or as little information about your shot as you want on the screen. You can mount the screen anywhere, or put it in a drawer…it works either way. Paired with the niche zero, it’s utterly joyful to use. It’s plumbed and drained, countersunk (in my case), has a tiny footprint and a 3 minute warm up.
I have a niche zero and I have it paired with a decent DE1. So no… the Niche isn’t your limiting factor especially for darker roasts with body.
I have a decent DE1XL and love it. My best friend has a Profitec Pro 500 so lots of experience with it. No regrets with the decent. I’ve looked at LM machines many times because they’re beautiful… but couldn’t be happier with all that the Decent allows me to do.
I have the Decent and love it. Couldn’t see myself owning anything else after using a Decent.
Decent owner for 5 years - yes, I'd buy again. It has been almost flawless. Zero regrets. You can find an owner on the link who will let you try their machine out. See it for yourself and then decide. [https://decentespresso.com/support/ambassador\_find](https://decentespresso.com/support/ambassador_find)
the community aspect and info on the Decent Forum is underrated! I learned 10x more from the machine and community in 2 years than I had in 13 years of owning a quickmill Anita.
Beyond the build or performance the OP did say minimal plastic, polymers, brass and copper. I don't know if that means copper over PTFE or silicone but in either case I don't think the DE1 meets the constraint.
>Considering all that, the Decent is more fitting towards this requirement of OP I can't do anything about the OP being unclear or contradictory. I said "copper over PTFE or silicone" to encourage clarification. So if the OP cares it's up to them to say "I prefer metal over plastic" or "I prefer PTFE+LDPE over copper" or whatever. Decent holds the position that PTFE plus a food safe polymer tubing is harmless, inert (a common assertion) and superior to metal which informs their build materials. >\[DE\] has no brass in the water path anymore, all stainless steel or ptfe As another comment hastens to remind us (I think) that PPS is "plastic". So the DE hot water path includes PTFE, flexible polymer tubing and PPS.
I went from a Linea Mini to a decent, so I think this is a fair question. I had specific needs for a smaller machine that may move about once a year, which was in favor of the decent. I enjoy the options to use different brew profiles, but I don’t often tinker with them unless I am using dramatically different beans. I do occasionally experiment in ways that the LMLM couldn’t. Changing pressure, temperature, or time is extremely easy and an interesting way to dial in a shot without touching the grinder. I also enjoy many of the small QoL features in the DE1 line. Least expected but loved feature is the shot timer. Drinking 180s after pour has been my optimal time to enjoy espresso shots. I never even considered that as a factor before. I liked the LMLM workflow and reliability. Decent actually has some issues that they won’t address under warranty, which is very concerning. Blaming the ghost touch failure on EM interference is infuriating because it is so obviously a software bug, but Decent refuses to admit it. I still enjoy the machine, but this defect and idiotic explanation makes me angry. La Marzocco is a reliable top-end machine. If you don’t want to tinker or add a bunch of technology to your espresso workflow, that’s the machine to get. If you want to tinker and juggle different features (and bugs), the DE1 does all of that.
If you’re looking to experiment, then the Decent for sure, for the community alone.
What called your attention to the decent? If you are using a flair 58 it means you will at least need a machine that can do some sort of pressure profile. Anything only 9 bar would not be worth it IMO. If you are looking experiment with different profiles and drink light roasted coffees then I don’t think you can go wrong with the decent.
I agree that the cup clearance is pretty poor on the Micra if you like large milk drinks. It’s one of the reasons I decided not to get one. Also, because I’m a boring millennial, I remember that prior to the release of the Micra, La Marzocco were selling the Mini for USD $4-$5k. Then they released the smaller less powerful Micra at that price and raised the price of the Mini by $2k. Such a blatant money grab and really turned me off. Consider the Decent DE1. More features, great quality and customer support and good cup clearance.
