Just get a Decent DE1. I got one after faffing about using an E61 with flow control, there is no substitute if you want to control every aspect of the shot.

I have the Decent and love it. Couldn’t see myself owning anything else after using a Decent.

Decent owner for 5 years - yes, I'd buy again. It has been almost flawless. Zero regrets. You can find an owner on the link who will let you try their machine out. See it for yourself and then decide. [https://decentespresso.com/support/ambassador\_find](https://decentespresso.com/support/ambassador_find)

the community aspect and info on the Decent Forum is underrated! I learned 10x more from the machine and community in 2 years than I had in 13 years of owning a quickmill Anita.

Beyond the build or performance the OP did say minimal plastic, polymers, brass and copper. I don't know if that means copper over PTFE or silicone but in either case I don't think the DE1 meets the constraint.

>Considering all that, the Decent is more fitting towards this requirement of OP I can't do anything about the OP being unclear or contradictory. I said "copper over PTFE or silicone" to encourage clarification. So if the OP cares it's up to them to say "I prefer metal over plastic" or "I prefer PTFE+LDPE over copper" or whatever. Decent holds the position that PTFE plus a food safe polymer tubing is harmless, inert (a common assertion) and superior to metal which informs their build materials. >\[DE\] has no brass in the water path anymore, all stainless steel or ptfe As another comment hastens to remind us (I think) that PPS is "plastic". So the DE hot water path includes PTFE, flexible polymer tubing and PPS.

I went from a Linea Mini to a decent, so I think this is a fair question. I had specific needs for a smaller machine that may move about once a year, which was in favor of the decent. I enjoy the options to use different brew profiles, but I don’t often tinker with them unless I am using dramatically different beans. I do occasionally experiment in ways that the LMLM couldn’t. Changing pressure, temperature, or time is extremely easy and an interesting way to dial in a shot without touching the grinder. I also enjoy many of the small QoL features in the DE1 line. Least expected but loved feature is the shot timer. Drinking 180s after pour has been my optimal time to enjoy espresso shots. I never even considered that as a factor before. I liked the LMLM workflow and reliability. Decent actually has some issues that they won’t address under warranty, which is  very concerning. Blaming the ghost touch failure on EM interference is infuriating because it is so obviously a software bug, but Decent refuses to admit it. I still enjoy the machine, but this defect and idiotic explanation makes me angry. La Marzocco is a reliable top-end machine. If you don’t want to tinker or add a bunch of technology to your espresso workflow, that’s the machine to get. If you want to tinker and juggle different features (and bugs), the DE1 does all of that.

If you’re looking to experiment, then the Decent for sure, for the community alone.

r/espressoConsidering Decent DE1, what other machines would you recommend? [$3,500]

What called your attention to the decent? If you are using a flair 58 it means you will at least need a machine that can do some sort of pressure profile. Anything only 9 bar would not be worth it IMO. If you are looking experiment with different profiles and drink light roasted coffees then I don’t think you can go wrong with the decent.

r/espressoHaving second thoughts on the La Marzocco Linea Micra [$4,500]

I agree that the cup clearance is pretty poor on the Micra if you like large milk drinks. It’s one of the reasons I decided not to get one. Also, because I’m a boring millennial, I remember that prior to the release of the Micra, La Marzocco were selling the Mini for USD $4-$5k. Then they released the smaller less powerful Micra at that price and raised the price of the Mini by $2k. Such a blatant money grab and really turned me off. Consider the Decent DE1. More features, great quality and customer support and good cup clearance.

Decent’s stress-testing on parts has reached a point where the failure point has now become the blank portafilter basket breaking. Personally, that’s plenty good for me. If the company is still around in 20 years, great. In the mean time, I won’t be worried about that when I’m brewing coffee with an ever-growing list of options that get added regularly, usually with no additional monetary cost. If you can brew drip on an e61, changing heat and flow rate on the fly, then that’s a much more robust machine than I’m giving it credit for. As it stands, Decent’s machines cannot truly replicate a lever. That’s about it. The ability to seamlessly go from profile to profile, many/most of which have been provided by the community, is invaluable. A large part of what you’re investing in with Decent is a community that is dedicated to opening up new avenues for coffee extraction. Having done coffee for decades, I can say it’s one of two brewing devices that I’ve seen as truly ground-breaking.

You are ignoring a simple rule when it comes to making coffee: The tools are only part of the equation. Why the Decent *can* accomplish making better coffee is at least in part the same reason an e61 will make better coffee than the Decent: The person using either machine has not only preferences, but also knowledge and skill that goes into making said coffee. For my money, if I had to purchase one machine for my home (which is what I assume is the OP’s use case)? Yes, I would absolutely invest in a Decent, a thousand times over. Why? Simple. 1) The consistent replication, shot after shot, is fantastic. 2) Being able to see where a shot goes wrong, if it does, is invaluable. 3) The ability to mimic almost any type of espresso profile is ridiculous. 4) Having access to a community of individuals who are utilizing and developing better ways to use the same machine and, most importantly, software, is worth more than the initial investment of the machine, many times over. The ever-growing dedicated user base ensures that what I’m able to tap into is not only well-funded, but insightful. 5) Grinder manufacturers commonly have DE1 machines in their testing labs for good reasons, especially 1 and 2 on this list. There are more reasons I’d personally invest in a Decent, and plan to purchase several more machines in the near-future. But those reasons do not definitively or objectively add up to better coffee — not on their own. There’s still a need to source good roasted coffee, and utilize good prep habits. Even then, good coffee is not a guarantee. Again, I would urge you to look at what the OP asked for. If you do not know how to address that, then don’t give out advice. Your question about why a Decent objectively makes better coffee is pointless. Can it? Yes. Can the e61? Yes. But that was not the point of OP’s question, was it? If you don’t know how a Decent will make excellent espresso, why are you answering questions about it? WHAT. A. CLOWN.
