r/espressoHelp me choose a grinder + espresso machine for [$1500] budget
7 months ago

Amazing gift and presentation of the gift. Props to the gift giver.  My situation is fairly similar to yours. At home I make a few espressos for myself while my wife drinks a cappuccino or latte. For this purpose a single boiler machine is going to be fine, but having a dual boiler will make your life a lot easier. The issue with a single boiler is not necessarily its capability, but the fact that changing the boiler temp to steam and then back to coffee takes time and effort. It gets annoying. With your budget, I think you can do better.  Yes, traditionally it has been good advice to spend as much, if not more, on the grinder than on the machine. But these days I think that advice is not quite as pertinent to most people. Affordable home espresso grinders have gotten good. It used to be the Rancilio rocky or get a $1500 Mazzer mini, but now we have the DF64 and all it's variants, the Lagom line, Eureka Mignon, Baratza, and many more to choose from. I say, take $500 for the grinder and spend the remaining $1000 on a nicer machine. If you look through online retainers open box or refurbished listings, you may find something very nice indeed. Let's also not forget that black Friday is very close. I think your $1500 can go far. Much further if you consider buying used from Facebook marketplace or eBay. I know I'd much rather have a moderately used dual boiler than a brand new single boiler. However, if you're intent on buying something now, and it must be new from an online retailer, let me suggest a few products.  Grinder: Eureka Mignon Specialita/Silenzio/Etc -this is one of the gold standards for a classic espresso taste in a package that excels in build quality, style, and ease of use. Seriously, it's quiet and the grinds are static free with barely any retention. I highly recommend.  Machine: ECM Casa V,  Profitec GO,  Lelit Victoria -each of these single boiler machines sits at the very top of the spectrum of single boiler machines. Each have good temperature control (PID), good build quality, and will steam enough milk for a Latte without running out.  Hope you find a setup that makes you happy. $1500 is an above average spend for a first espresso foray, so I'm sure whatever you end up with will be stellar. Many of us have started from $300 or $500 setups and progressed to where you are starting.

The ECM Casa V is extraordinary, mine was about a thousand new but I would imagine you could find used for around your 500 to $600.

I had your budget in 2024. •I purchased a refurbished ECM Casa V for $550 but considered the Legato and Gagia Classic. Very pleased with my machine •I bought an ESP grinder after giving up on a manual setup. I share the machines with my wife, who found hand grinding tedious. Consider others’ ease of use. The ESP is a great grinder, though I swapped it once I learned what I like in a machine •In hindsight, I wish I shopped Marketplace aggressively. I just saw a DF64/Gaggia go for <$700 in my area and would have loved that setup to start •I think you’d struggle to do better than a DF64 or Mignon Zero

Gaggia classic recently had an issue with Teflon coated boilers that were flaking. Do some research to avoid. Personally I went with an ECM Casa V. I worked in coffee for 10 years, from Starbucks superautos to slayers and Marzoccos, roasting my own beans, and working with a GS3 and laspazzialle single groups in different living situations. IMO there’s a concerning amount of people recommending breville for your budget. They’re okay but build quality trumps gadgetry every time for me. I picked the casa V for this reason. Having used the best machines, I don’t feel uncomfortably limited with it at all. A dual boiler would be nice so I don’t have to wait 60 seconds for steam after pulling a shot, and extra steam capacity from a larger boiler might be nice for the occasional non-coffee-snob to have more than a 12oz latte, but other than that if you have great beans and a good grinder, you’ll have great shots. The Rancilio Silvia and profitec go are very similar machines, but I liked the ECM build quality better.

Hmm I would look for 2nd hand ECM Casa, they are quite a reliable make, or the lelit with PID (Got it for 200 euro) But you could also find e61 machines 2nd hand in this price range

r/espressoCan't decide between a single boiler setup or dual boiler? [€1400]

I have used three different single boiler machines over the years. All of them make good Milk Drinks. If you don't plan on doing more than two milk drinks at the same time regularly, single boiler is enough. The ECM is an amazing machine, absolutely gorgeous, very powerful steam, in comparison to, for example, a Rancilio Silvia, incredible build quality inside and out. Stable temperature (even on my old non PID), can be retrofitted with flow control rather easily. I used mine for almost ten years and now is the first time I *need* to have it serviced (some seals start leaking in the group head). If you want to treat yourself and are into the looks, I would go for either that or a Profitec Go. Leilt are hard to beat when it comes to price-performance, but you CAN feel the difference when using them. If I were you and did Espresso like 80%-90% of the time, I personally would opt for an ECM Puristika, that thing is on a whole other level when it comes to build quality and finish (seriously, check some reviews online, it's such a nice machine). Then get a small auto frother when you get the urge for a Cappuchino.
