For your use case, i’d lean [Turin Legato V2](https://featherab.com/shopit?q=Turin%2BLegato%2BV2%2Bespresso%2Bmachine) if the extra cash does not hurt. I ran into this same tradeoff with lighter roasts, and the machine that gives you more stable control usually stays useful longer than the one that just gets you started cheaper. The [Gemilai Owl](https://featherab.com/shopit?q=Gemilai%2BOwl%2Bespresso%2Bmachine) is tempting if budget is the main constraint, but your DF64 is already good enough that the machine will become the limiting piece pretty quickly. Since you want cortados, occasional back-to-back drinks, and room to learn pressure or flow behavior, the Turin Legato V2 fits that path better. On burrs, I would keep that decision separate and choose the machine first.
I own a Gemilai Owl (the one with a single boiler) and have been using it daily for a few weeks now. I think it's pretty great for the price so far. A lot of people say it feels flimsy (and it probably is) but you can quite easily just brace it with another hand when you lock in the portafilter. There isn't pressure profiling but at that price point, I think that's not an issue personally, and it comes with basic preinfusion too. The great thing about it is that it's a 58mm machine so it can fit a lot industry standard stuff. The only thing I'm kinda meh about is the shower screen. It doesn't really disperse that evenly, so I personally use a puck screen with it.
If a short heat-up time is important for you then the Lelit is not ideal. You'd probably want to wait a good 10 minutes for optimal stability. I was in the same spot and ended up choosing the Gemilai. Shorter heat up time, better price, current warranty is 2 years which actually better then what you'd get with the Lelit. Lelit is a much more reputable brand but I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
Gemelai owl. Much better
gemilai owl really good for craft I did buy an $80 grinder to go beside it found the grinder built into machines are rough.
Out of curiosity, what were your issues? I had to return my owl because the water never got hot, even with the PID set to max and running blank shots through.
Man, good for you. Can’t believe you had to go through two units though. I toyed with the idea of getting a replacement machine but the thought of potentially having to repackage and reship a second defective unit just killed any desire I had.
