In what way are they outclassed exactly? Like for like in terms of model tier, can you explain how they are better? How is a Synesso MVP Hydra better than a LM Strada X? How is this piece of shit San Remo Opera sitting in my workshop better? Or the Slayer Steam LP on my bench, where at assembly the technicians did no cable management and cables are just thrown across the boilers. As a technician who has worked on various models across all four of those brands, I’d love to know why you think LM is inferior. I hear baristas with dogmatic opinions all the time who have never even opened one of these machines.
Of course baristas will have different opinions than techs, the work done on them is inherently different. Maybe the Linea I have in front of me has better internal components than the old opera I worked on but it's much more annoying to dial in a new espresso on it. I feel it should be mentioned too that A 3group Strada X has all the same capabilities as the hydra MVP for a cool $20,000 more. The tech I work with most often LOVES a rocket boxer. Recommends them to everyone. Do I want one? Absolutely not. Tech Mind and Barista mind have different focuses
Given that you haven’t identified any budget limitations, I’m going to enthusiastically recommend the [La Marzocco Strada x1](https://home.lamarzoccousa.com/espresso-machines/strada-x1/). Will handle all roast types with ease and even steam excellent milk :)
How do you define “worth it?” IMO, LM machines are really damn enjoyable to use. And for me the enjoyment of the process is almost as important as the result in the cup. If I’m gonna be doing this every day for decades as a hobby, then it makes sense to splurge on a machine I actually enjoy using. If you’re asking whether the difference in price is proportional to the quality of the espresso… then heck no.
La Marzocco Strada X1 I like the fit and finish, availability of techs in my country and build quality. The decent is nice, but it may be difficult to service and I do not enjoy the pump noise. but any dual boiler with flow or pressure profiling and ability to do either manual or profiled brew is enough. Heck even a gaggia with gaggimate gets you there. what i like to have is a dual boiler and gear pump. i also really like kees van der westen spiritello, but it only does lever shots. and i am afraid I would want something else from time to time. however i am pretty sure in next 1-2 decades something even better comes up :)
Yeah, I worked in a place that had a commercial La Marzocco and the amount of absolute slop that came out of that machine was awful to watch. Very few cleaned up after use etc and the grinder was never dialed in. Shame really but just not fit for general office life
I started with a Barista Pro and leveled up to a La Marzocco.

Having a La Marzocco in no way saves you money. Between heating the machine, water, maintenance, etc. You'll be lucky to break even after 5-7 years. With that said, it is a single joy of my life; I wake up every day looking forward to pulling a shot. I made a deal with my wife for the next 10 years; she doesn't need to get me anything, no birthday, anniversary, Christmas, etc. Let's say that's a great deal. I'm a picky person to get gifts for, and this saves her and me time and effort. Best of luck with your decision.
I bought one and sold it less than a year. Didn’t like the machine.
Everything… except steam power is stunning.
