It's all just a lazy window dressing exercise, if you ask me. Pimp my Espresso Machine. If it costs more than £30 above the prices of a standard classic, then it's not worth the price, unless that weird lip on the top front edge is a PID controller, like the Classic GT!
That was my point. £30 unless it has a PID. Looking at that photograph, there is a hint of control panel plastic on the very top front edge so I suspect that they've added a PID. This also has the same switches as the other model with PID and I know from the internal specification, that the switches are part of the pid module chassis and not independently mounted individual switches. If it has a PID then I would say it's worth it for people who want that bit extra but don't want to modify their machine..
That is a great budget. You can buy awesome machines at that price. My pick would be the Gaggia GT if you wish to save money, or the Profitec Move if you don't wish to save money. Both are excellent dual boilers, and built to last. I don't recommend the Rancilio Silvia Pro X. It lacks QoL features that the other two has. It does not have programmable set-and-forget auto-on/off (you have to do it every single day), it has non-human readable menu programming, it has fake pre-infusion that doesn't do much, and it has the world's worst drip tray. It's honestly inexcusable that Rancilio has been receiving complaints about its drip tray for years and years and has done nothing about it. It's also way overpriced in the U.S. market. In the EU market, it's a more reasonable value proposition.
Perhaps you may wait a bit to get a good online deal for a Gaggia Classic GT (dual boiler) or buy a Gaggia Classic Pro E24 (single boiler), install the GaggiMate mod to unleash its full powers and save money for a good grinder. I’m supper happy with my GCP+GM. https://preview.redd.it/pkfrkv3abtrf1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ea20b0dc711efbdf9d1664a9231eadc9b8654b00
Gaggia Classic GT + Timemore Sculptor 078s + saved money = happiness
I had issues with my Gaggia GT we couldn’t figure out but I really did like that machine the few weeks I had it. Swapping over to the Profitec Move.
The drywall texture is a choice. I also don't love Gaggia following Profitec's naming conventions for these machines. Go, Move, now Up. It's a little too close to Live, Laugh, Love for me. Just keep the classic Gaggia badge. But I do much prefer the integrated PID look of this machine and the Gaggia Classic GT. It's so much cleaner-looking than mods.
I think this is the answer tbh. I did a PID upgrade to the Gaggia and the difference is night and day. That would be my first step if comfortable tinkering and save the money. Otherwise upgrading to a PID machine would make the most immediate difference. The standard Gaggia fluctuates too much and requires temp surfing etc so the issues identified are pretty normal
A few months ago, I did the same thing. I started with a La Pavoni Pro with a piston pressure gauge. Just this week, 5 months later, I purchased a second hand Gaggia Classic with PID. It's been a very good way to learn. I started with a Timemore C3 hand grinder and upgraded to Eureka Mignon One 65 - it's a solid grinder.
I went from a PID gaggia to a spring lever and i loooove it. My machine has many features that make it nicer than the gaggia, but the spring lever itself is my favorite part: the body and the consistency are amazing and the feeling is worth almost as much as how great the espresso actually tastes
I just finally upgraded and sold my Gaggia Classic with PID, etc for more steam power. I thought my Gaggia was great, but steaming milk is much earlier now with my Rancilio.
