First thing first, if you plan to do anything a bit serious related to music on a computer, you need an audio interface to replace your built-in soundcard. It will give you a much better signal to noise ratio, XLR and jack inputs and a +48V power supply that a lot of microphones require. Most of them are pretty good. I'd say at least 2 inputs but you could get away with only one. If you plan to use anything relatred to synths, it's a good idea to make sure it has MIDI plugs. Here are a few microphone ideas if you want to venture away from the ubiquitous SM57 / 58 pair : \- Beyerdynamic TG V70, a very directional hypercardioid microphone. Excellent for recording voices and instruments in noisy environments. Impervious to wind, hardly gets caught in feedback. A favorite of mine I have 2 that I use all the time. \- t.bone MB 55, it isn't loud at all but other than that has an honest rendering of whatever you throw at it, for a very small price. Best quality/price ratio. \- Audio-Technica AT2020, wide membrane mics are awesome to capture the purest sounds, typically from a voice or string instrument in a controlled environment. They're difficult to deal with on stage. \- IK Multimedia iRig Mic Studio, to me the best all in one option. It can be use to record into phones or computer via usb and work as a sound interface with phones output. Solid, convincing tone. As far as inexpensive good solutions go, I really like this one.
