Hypercardioid gooseneck mics along the front of the stage, like a DPA 4099, coupled with some hanging mics, like a countryman Isomax, should help. PCC mics like a Crown PCC160, are frequently recommended, but you’ll want the capsule of the mic to be isolated from the floor to help minimize vibrations traveling into the mic due to footfalls or dancing. You can also angle the capsule of a gooseneck mic (like a 4099) so it’s aimed at where the performers head may be, rather than their shins. Keep in mind, though, that this configuration is for reinforcement, not necessarily amplification, and won’t do much for leveling individual cast members. If one person is quiet and another person is loud, that won’t change with hanging mics. If you already run overhead mics I’m sure that isn’t new information. A well-tuned PA system can also help minimize feedback from these mics. Minimizing frequency peaks caused by standing waves due to the architecture of the room you’re in can help get you more gain before feedback.
Phew, depends on whole a lot of factors. For an easy-to-use and general purpose mic, I really think more people should try the Electro Voice RE50 (the 635a model was extremely similar, but is not currently available new). That's for more of an up-close spot mic that won't get overly boomy because of proximity effect and resonances coming off the guitar body. You may also be able to find a used clip-on DPA 4099 instrument mic in your budget. Remember to consider what would be comfortable for you to manage by yourself, if you're working alone. Juggling too much equipment can take your attention away from the instrument. For what I personally like to hear in a recording, my "favorite" would to be blend a spot mic (like the above), with a mid-side stereo pair of condensers. This is definitely more for a professional recording situation, but my favorites right now a Sennheiser MKH8020 / MKH8030 pair.
Genuine game changer when our brass band started using these.
I ended up buying a DPA 4099 which we were all very happy with… until it died after the first show and we had to send it back 😢
DPA 4099. I use this on my grand regularly, can highly recommend: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/VO4099CoreP--dpa-dvote-core-4099-stereo-instrument-microphone-set-with-piano-mounting-clips
If you want to record directly from the piano, this is the system to get. I use it directly mounted on to our grand: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/4099DP1101P--dpa-4099-core-stereo-system-for-piano
Love to see it! I did it against my DPA 4099 and sounded like a major upgrade.
DPA 4099 P (for piano) \*2 pcs, under the hood of the piano, cabling from the rear side of the piano, carefully done by black velcro. Preamps - portable ZOOM H4/H6 hiding beneath the foot of piano. Or, 2\* Sennheiser plug-on radio system. OR, Shure SM-91 Beta for piano, under the hood, or even on the floor under the piano. Maybe 2\* Shure SM-91 Betas on the edge of the scene, flat surface required. Cabling and mics will not be visible from camera. Additionally, a stereo set of SDC' like Shure SM 81, Audix ADX51, Oktava MK-012-2, Neumann KM 184, on a high boom/ light stand in a hall, where viewers sit rows. Opera singers have strong vocals, 120-130 dB of pressure. Often, they moving heads, swinging backwards and forwards around their position. So, close miking is not necessary and even could lead to problems. Piano and its level is what you need to be concerned. So 1 (2) mics for piano, 2 mics for AB in a hall is what you need.
