Based on 1 year's data from Feb 25, 2026 How it works
I've just been piecing together a budget home recording setup for my similar 'dude and guitars' music for recording in home office and around a busy house. I.e. very much a crappy recording environment. I've bought a bunch of stuff which collects dust, here's what I recommend based on what I use regularly and would cost about $300: A pair of cheap small diaphragm condensers like the Rode M5 or Lewitt 040 for your acoustic instruments. Also lets you play with stereo recording and works to capture vocals/acoustic at once if you need to. An SM58. Use for vocals and then take the grill/ball off to mic your speaker cab for electric. I tried and failed to get good results with a large diaphragm condenser. When you get a good take they'll make you say 'wow', but they capture *everything* which didn't work for my environment and level of talent... Lastly if you have money left put it into good monitoring headphones. My Sennheiser HD600s are the single best recording purchase I've made. There's zero point recording great audio if you can't hear it.
tbone rb700- with a se eoectronics dmt2 impedance changing preamp. lewitt lct 040…for that price…got some neumanns to compare
I’m a noob with a long way to go, not much to compare to, and little time to learn, but I’ve got Lewitt LCT040 matched pair and I’ve been really happy with them. To my ear, they sound really good out of the box, even with an idiot like me in charge of them.
get a video camera with a mic in jack. also long 3,5mm audio cables, with extension lines so you can run it from tge cam close to your group. place a zoom h2n (60-80 bucks used) on a little gorilla pod in the center of the group. thats the most bang for the buck i can think of. next step is to get a small mixer and connect a stereo pair of lewitt lct 040 to it and run the output of the mixer to your camera. the lcts are fantastic for the money, come close to my neumanns km. experiment with mic placement, ortf, spaced pair, xy… but please, forget about internal mics…even if they are decent, theyll be to far away for a good sound.
another great mic that is clearer and even more feedback resistant is the audix om5. i wouldnt go usb mic. get some scarlett interface. then you could also use condenser mics for stereo recording guitars etc… lewitt lct 040 are grwat small condensers. almost up with my neumanns km… a great underrated large condenser mic is shure sm27, rugged designed for stage use, integrated pop protection. got mine used for 120. cheap china ribbons can je great with a cloudlifter…tbone rb700 fat warm deep…love it. and to throw in another polar pattern: its figure 8! recording from both back amd fromt and deaf at the sides. some might call it bidirectional.
Hi, I'm sure you can make some great vocal recordings with the LCT 040 MATCH. Just make sure to use an external pop filter. Give it a try. Positioning the laptop exactly behind the microphone will give you the best rejection of its noise.
Lewitt LMT-040 is my favorite condenser for acoustic guitar. At $129, it’s a steal. It takes very little EQ to get a nice warm tone with plenty of highs to hear fingers rubbing on the strings. A ‘57 with the wind screen is a bit more than your target price, but works ok. The ‘58 is more limited to only being used as a vocal mic. There are tons of newer designs that really shine. Truthfully, find a store that carries Shure, Electro-Voice, Audio-Technica, SE, etc and ask to try mics out. Take your own headphones in, and sing/talk into as many as you can. Find the one that fits your voice best. People go out and buy mics recommended by those of us who haven’t even heard your voice, and once they go buy what was revcommemded, they write back hating its sound. You need to do some personal shopping, to get what pleased you. :-)
The most versatile mic I've ever used is the Lewitt 040. It works great on literally everything I've tried it on. Vocals, drums, violin, ambience, vehicles, guitar, upright bass... Plus it's tiny! For $100 I don't know of anything else that flexible.
