I guess it’s just relative. It can hang if not excel over the u87 at 1/3 the price

I’m a mixer so when I’m tracking it’s usually vocals or DI GTR or Bass, so I’m limited on sources. The gefell does the smooth very well if not better than the 87, but within the same ballpark. Especially when you’re stacking vocals. The bump in the top of the 87 can be achieved with some EQ no problem but the gefell’s top end is super pliable. I guess it’s because I’m a mixer but I can really shape it however I need it to sound without it getting harsh or breaking apart. Plus the Gefell is built like a tank.

Hmm, that's an interesting take. I've always used these for fatter sounds. The U87 has a profile to me that can give a lot of top end and upper mids, while 70s are fat and smooth. I don't use them in the same scenarios, but I agree that they are both in the same quality level. The Gefell is a fantastic value so I get your point, but is it fair to compare the 70s to the U87? I've got one of the older ones with the transformer (um70s?), and my buddy has 2 of the UMT. They are fantastic.

AT4047 is nice, but I think an AT4050 is even better. If you really want a U87 sound, get a Gefell UMT70S.

That would be my #2 or #1 choice, depending on the voice. My #1 would be my M990. My UMT70S is my best versatile mic.

Do you have a m990? I have a UMT70s and have been considering the tube version of the 930 for vocals. Sometimes I find the pvc diaphragm to sound too soft. I’d think the 990 would be much more open and modern

>If you really want a U87 sound, get a Gefell UMT70S. They're just wonderful mics. Love 'em to bits. Silky top end, it's elevated but never too bright. Switch to figure 8 or Omni and they're flat. Great capsule and electronics. Their size belies their abilities.

Microtech Gefell UMT 70S The silky top end of a classic Neumann in a compact format for an absolute bargain price, plus different response curves by polar pattern. Top, top quality. Great vocal mic.

My god these are such a great mic. Silky highs on vocals to die for, detail for days. The iconic large diaphragm sound of your favourite classic mics worth megabucks, but in a svelte package at a reasonable price. Brilliant.

While not every mic is for every voice, I have found the umt-70s (I own it) on my voice, to be extremely present, with a very detailed, pleasing mid-range push.

I came here to say this. This mic is amazing!

r/Logic_StudioIs a Shure PGA 181 cardioid condenser microphone a decent mic for strong vocals?

I have an mxl condenser mic that works well, but just bought a Neumann condenser mic off Amazon. In the studio, they always said they used the $4k Neumann on me. Not sure that it is a knock off, but supposedly the same one Billie eillish uses and it sounds great. Under $400.
