I agree, I hate them for vocals, I just feel like I can never get them sounding good. They’re either boxy and stuffy or too sibilant. I don’t mind the 604/904 for toms and I wouldn’t say no to a 609 for instruments (and the 906 is quite nice) but I just can’t get along with their handheld vocal dynamics, and I unfortunately have to use them all the time because of my employers.
I have a bunch of them because when I was broke and needed mics, musicians friend had a sale on sennheiser mics for 50% off. I bought two three-packs each of the e835 and e604. Some of the best money I ever spent. I don't have any problems getting the 835 to sound good. I usually just HPF them at 120Hz and that's it, but to be fair I only use them for club gigs and such.
I remember when those 604 and 904 mics first appeared. I fell in love. Doing a rock band when the drummer had 5 toms and 2 snares all being micd with tall stands and 421's. Sounds great but all those stands really got in the way during change overs. Even more so when the Head liner made 11 stands off limits and the opener drums were on the floor in front of the drum riser
