Based on 1 year's data from Feb 25, 2026 How it works
How does this compare on guitars to the 609? Because I absolutely loathe that mic on guitars (though it's great as a snare bottom mic). Too much 3-5k, which hurts my ears on a mid forward tone. Been tempted to pick up a 906 for snare bottom due to the presence switch, but if it works well on guitars (especially coupled with a ribbon) I'd be curious to try it.
I agree, I hate them for vocals, I just feel like I can never get them sounding good. They’re either boxy and stuffy or too sibilant. I don’t mind the 604/904 for toms and I wouldn’t say no to a 609 for instruments (and the 906 is quite nice) but I just can’t get along with their handheld vocal dynamics, and I unfortunately have to use them all the time because of my employers.
I've got a few too many! (But remember that for Emma forever ago was recorded with just one sm57) I'm a Logic Pro X user, I have a couple of free plugins that I use frequently, including HELM by Matt Tytel, SurgeXT, Spitfire audio LABS, and the Klevgrand DAW casette. (The stock apple plugins are very good, especially the compressor.) I have plenty of paid plugins, too, but these free ones are really worth your attention For vox: I either use an electrovoice RE50N-db, a beyerdynamic m80, or a Sennheiser e945. I use the 945 for all demos because it's my stage mic and it helps me figure out how my vocal melody fits live. I use the RE50N-db mainly for backup vox or for a double. For electric guitar: I either use an sm57 or an E609 (or my at2040 if I need it to be audible but not sound great to thicken the mix.) For acoustic guitar: I use the RE50N-db near the 12th fret and an sm57 near the sound hole unless I'm going for a really dark sound, in which case, I put the RE50N-db near the body around 4 inches past the bridge and cut out the mid frequencies For bass amp (rock context, otherwise I just line it in): AT2040 For capturing samples, I either use an Sm57 or my field recorder
800 series are a bit shit, as is the 609 guitar amp mic. Unpleasant sounding in a way I find it hard to describe. The 945, however, is a very nice mic that I use a lot. It suits most voices pretty well, lots of clarity and nice pickup pattern.
I’d probably be interested in room acoustics before suggesting condenser. But AKG 220 is solid in an acoustically treated space that doesn’t have a lot of noise. If room is untreated…..use closer dynamic mic like shure 57, Audix i5, sennheiser 609…..or used senn 906 . Definitely if you go this route play around with placement , distance , on/off axis. If your cab is one speaker, that makes things easier, but if it’s a 4x10 or 4x12, etc you may want to listen and see what speaker sounds best
If I was recording you myself, I’d reach for a Sennheiser 906. It’s not leaps and bounds better than 609, but to me has a bit more clarity. 609 can be good on low end too, so that’s not out of the question. I’d probably also use a 57, a cheap ribbon, or something else to blend, but ultimately with one mic to purchase a used 906 is what I’d get. If you want new, go for trusty 57. It will always get used
Sennheuser e609 I keep one in my gigging combo amp for any venue that mics us up, and for recording it's way easier to clock than a sm57
2 dynamics are enough. I like a condenser for acoustic or vocals, but SM57/58s are good enough for everything but a full drum kit. If micing amps, i like the sennheiser e906/609. The 609 is similar to the aforementioned sm57, but e906 is a bit more airy.
Granted I am a novice but I really like my 609
