I agree, I hate them for vocals, I just feel like I can never get them sounding good. They’re either boxy and stuffy or too sibilant. I don’t mind the 604/904 for toms and I wouldn’t say no to a 609 for instruments (and the 906 is quite nice) but I just can’t get along with their handheld vocal dynamics, and I unfortunately have to use them all the time because of my employers.
I don’t dangle it from the amp and use a stand to not couple rumble
E609 is awful that is all. I have E906 set to middle setting (boost, flat, cut) and I have found a sweet spot where I don’t need to low pass the fizz out. I have a single E906 on my mesa cab. Haven’t had the need to change it for years.
E906 is the answer. No need to pair and deal with mixing and phase aligning. Just slap it on
Hey everyone! I play electric and acoustic guitar, and I perform ancient/old music using modern guitar equipment! I find this music super beautiful and approachable, and try to show this as much as possible. My most recent video performing a piece from the early 1800s https://youtu.be/Cv83ppucUIE?si=vBMRUIFxmQAkaZll For my equipment, i started mostly in the audio world! I tried to find the best sounding microphone for my amp, and settled on the Sennheiser e906. Everything else is just my iPhone, iPad, and using their free GarageBand and iMovie software.
I’d probably be interested in room acoustics before suggesting condenser. But AKG 220 is solid in an acoustically treated space that doesn’t have a lot of noise. If room is untreated…..use closer dynamic mic like shure 57, Audix i5, sennheiser 609…..or used senn 906 . Definitely if you go this route play around with placement , distance , on/off axis. If your cab is one speaker, that makes things easier, but if it’s a 4x10 or 4x12, etc you may want to listen and see what speaker sounds best
If I was recording you myself, I’d reach for a Sennheiser 906. It’s not leaps and bounds better than 609, but to me has a bit more clarity. 609 can be good on low end too, so that’s not out of the question. I’d probably also use a 57, a cheap ribbon, or something else to blend, but ultimately with one mic to purchase a used 906 is what I’d get. If you want new, go for trusty 57. It will always get used
SM57, Sennheiser e906, Audix i5 are my go to’s. I’ve also had great results with the Warm Audio WA19.
What exactly are you using it for? Vocals? Mic’ing a guitar cab? Singing and recording an acoustic? If for vocals the Shure SM58 is the standard. SM58 and SM57 I believe are the same capsule with a different basket. I like the SM58 basket for vocals. The SM57 is designed for mic’ing cabs though it can be used for vocals. For mic’ing a guitar cab I like the Sennheiser e906 over the SM57 because it doesn’t require a stand. For singing and recording acoustic to a single mic is when condensor mics come into play.
The most versatile mic I own is a Sennheiser E906. I've used it for vocals, acoustic guitar, ukulele, guitar amp - both studio and live, saxophone, percussion, kick drum, generally capturing a whole drum set with one mic...
2 dynamics are enough. I like a condenser for acoustic or vocals, but SM57/58s are good enough for everything but a full drum kit. If micing amps, i like the sennheiser e906/609. The 609 is similar to the aforementioned sm57, but e906 is a bit more airy.
You're not taking it seriously if you're not prepared to treat your room. There are so many non permanent options. Can be as simple as moving blankets hung from walls by Command hooks & tarp clips with an air gap. Rugs, soft furnishings, bookcases. Why do people think they can put in zero effort and get a good product? Blue Yeti is the wrong mic for almost every situation, especially an untreated room. ONCE you have treatment, if you want a cheap condenser, Blue Ember can work well (with interface). Many people swear by sEV7. That said, IME the mic with best rejection for terrible rooms is Sennheiser e906 as demonstrated [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5NcazTMRkA&t=424s&ab_channel=TurbotheTechNerd)
e835 is just cheap junk.... e845 is a little better but still not great, both are a fraction of the price of a 58, which is why you see them, they're cheaper than a 58 and sound better than most other options at the same price point. e900 series are the ones that are supposed to sound decent and I'd rate them above a 58 However, the best value dynamic currently available (IMO) is the SE v7... Its the same price as a 58 but sounds better than an e945 (IMO)
