Running these analyses costs money. Buy through my links to help keep lights on! I may get a small commission.
Or Fenix 8, 43mm. Maps are awesome. I had a Fenix 7S but my last one is an Epix Pro 42mm. Fenix battery is far superior but the Epix screen is much easier to see.
Ive had a Fenix 5 and 7, now Epix Pro 2. I recommend the Epix because it's 30% cheaper and the screen is better.
No shit. I had no issues with any of the three. My EPIX PRO 2 was discounted so your comment explains why I got it cheap but I thought the discount was due to nearing end of life. I've used all three and track 2-3 workout events a day, steps and sleep. I never had an issue with any of them. Fenix 5S sapphire, Fenix 7S, sapphire/solar, Epix Pro 2.
Depends from model. Really difficult for me sleep and wear everyday garmin epix pro gen 2, 42mm. Really not accurate, too bulky. I sell it, and buy a forerunner 165, 43mm. No problem to wear when i sleep or everyday use. I m really happy with it!
True for epix pro 2. Really bad experience. I sell it and buy myself a garmin FR 165. Another story!
Garmin 265s or if you could get a Epix Pro 42mm for a decent price would have everything you could wish for, including the latest HR Sensor v.5 If you don't want AMOLED screen then the Fenix 7 Pro 42mm would also be perfect. Also consider the Epix pro and Fenix Pro have a flashlight. Sound useless, but comes in handy from nightly toilet visits, camping or just as a strobe while running (can set it up so it auto turns on and blinks when running after sunset)
Get a chest strap for triathlons, one that works in water. The 965/Fenix/Epix are the same or minimal difference. The latest are the Fenix 8 nad forerunner 970. Get what looks good to you, because features are 99.9% the same. Also Fenix is a big bigger
Fenix/Epix are the same, Forerunner 9xx has 99% same functions but a bit lighter and not as tall, but only available in one size
i also have an epix pro (42mm)! love it also. it resolved all the issues i had with the suunto race S. I have issues with garmin (app sucks, for one) but ultimately it works for all the crucial stuff. I was curious about the coros watches but suunto need a whole new approach to win me back at this point…
i did a 'review' of the race s (which is functionally close to the race 2): [https://www.reddit.com/r/Suunto/comments/1itwkov/suunto\_race\_s\_review\_and\_why\_i\_am\_forced\_back\_to/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Suunto/comments/1itwkov/suunto_race_s_review_and_why_i_am_forced_back_to/) for me it was an easy decision to go back to garmin now i'm back on garmin (epix pro - functionally similar to fr970) i have been pleasantly surprised by how useful the smart features and mapping is on modern garmins, amongst all the the basic stuff that just...works. i would encourage you to buy and try both (check their returns policies but at least in the uk i was able to return my suunto before 30 days of use).
You state you already have a Fenix, but don't state which one? For hiking I'd probably need a really good reason to upgrade a Fenix such as the Fenix not holding enough charge for 1-2 days of hiking or not having maps (although that's not necessarily a huge requirement depending on the trail). Battery life will be better on the watches you suggested, but you're almost certainly going to be bringing a battery pack and charging a watch barely makes a dent in the capacity of a 10-20,000mah battery. I'd personally lean towards a Fenix 7s Pro or 43mm Epix 2 Pro if you have small wrists. Almost all of the features you'd use in the models you listed, but generally available for cheaper.
I think you're on the right track. I won't attempt to resolve the MIPS vs. AMOLED debate here, but I think for a lot of people the Epix 2 Pro is a better choice and it seems to consistently sell for less money than the same size MIPS Fenix when there are sales or used. If you can wear the 51mm size I think the AMOLED becomes even more desirable since you still get crazy long battery life even with always on display.
Curious to see a comparison with the Coros Pace models. From what I've seen I'd have a real hard time recommending Garmin to someone looking for an new entry level watch and paying MSRP. If they're willing to buy lightly used that all changes a bit though. I've Epix 2 Pro's selling for less than the 170 Music for a year or so.
Make sure you also consider the prices of the Epix 2 (and maybe the Epix 2 Pro?) in your decision. Epix 2 has essentially the same feature set as the 955, but with an OLED screen but with better build quality. It can often be found for < $400 in the states new and less than $300 used. The only thing to be aware of is the non-Sapphire version lacks dual-band GPS. To me the big difference between the watches in your OP is maps. Depending on what you do this may be a non-issue or a huge feature. I basically don't touch maps when I'm on roads, but for trail stuff like hikes and trail running I find maps to be an absolute necessity. It's great being able to load a route/GPX file in your watch and follow that on your watch without touching your phone.
For years I wore a Fenix 5s and then 6s in rose gold. I have an Epix Pro Gen2 now which has a nice amoled display like the current Fenix 8 series. The Epix 42mm (same size as the Fenix s series) came in soft gold which is also attractive for women. I almost got that but I wanted a little more battery life so I went with a 47mm this time around. But the 42mm would been just fine and if I had a job where I have to dress more professionally I would have gone with that one. The Epix pro gen2 is the last generation and while not cheap, is an excellent deal since it does almost everything the current Fenix series does (certainly everything your wife wants) including the current gen HR sensor and has an amoled display. The Venu watches are okay but are more lifestyle and not true sports watches. I briefly had one and it wasn’t near as durable as the Fenix/Epix. All of these had sapphire glass because I’m not the most girly girl and am tough on my watches.
