Have you tried an AMOLED watch? Since getting a 970 I would never go back to MIPs. Only negative is battery life. But that’s not really a big deal for me.

Okay if you’re gonna look at one YouTuber and claim to be an expert then buy your Apple Watch. Garmin’s Elevate 5 sensor is quite exceptional. I use both a Garmin FR970 and an AWU2 extensively for marathon training. I use a chest strap with both when I do speed work to get the best data during my intervals but it’s increasingly a wash a lot of the time - the wrist sensors in both are really good. I’m not the exception here. Do a bit more research before trying to come in swinging like an expert. PS. All devices pretty much suck at sleep stage detection so if you have an unusual legitimate need to know exactly how much REM or Deep Sleep you’re getting, don’t expect any watch to give you any real precision. Maybe go have a watch of some of DCRainmaker’s content.

So I train with both the AWU2 and my Forerunner, and I’m a fan of each for different reasons. Never have I heard anyone complain about the GPS accuracy of an Ultra 2 though. I generally find my two watches are very close if I use them together but, if anything, the Ultra is always a bit closer to the mark, especially in areas that challenge GPS. Very odd what you’re saying here.

Where??? I’m really curious. All the reputable reviewers rave about Apple for accuracy of GPS (especially the Ultra, with its dual-band) and HR. Now when it comes to all the other fitness functionality it sucks big time haha. But, on the other hand, the Garmin is far worse from a smartwatch perspective and my AWU2’s cellular connectivity is above and beyond the thing I care most about on long, remote runs.

I’ve had FR970 for just a bit longer than a week now and it has been a really pleasant experience. The display is just perfect and a shame that fenix 8 didn’t get it. Overall ui snappiness is also better on the FR970. Fenix 8 is a behemoth of a watch but compared to FR970, it is a tad slower (such as slower wake on gesture) and less bright. If you go Fenix 8 way, you would be paying for premium materials (not to say fr970 doesn’t feel premium, it feels amazing, rugged look, diving features, inductive buttons and a bit longer battery life. My priority was a bit of a smooth user experience (still within the garmin ecosystem :)) and FR970 did not disappoint. Decide for yourself based on this watch will be thing you’d be A. Looking at all the time B. Scrolling up and down, entering menus, moving around all the time C. Wearing 24/7 For me FR970 has a higher average score in those 3 categories so I went with it :)

I bought Garmin FR970, sold my SE2. Used it for a month, i was trying to convince my self i like FR970 but at the end i gave up, sent back the watch since it was in return period and then bought AW Ultra 2 on a deal for $580. I won’t tell how good garmin is, its fitness insights, the running and health coach etc. all for free. I would just highlight the negatives which were deal breaker for me. Also Important: i don’t mind charging my watch daily, because i am not a freak to wear my watch while taking bath and poop in morning. So during this time i would keep it on charge as soon as i wake up. This was my usual trend during SE2. Why i returned? Remember the watch is sold for $749 1. There were many bugs, just check official garmin forums and its all filled with issues. 2. Maps experience was very pathetic, honestly its so slow. My runner buddy has a suunto race2 and the maps were so much smooth…. 3. The OS experience was bad because it was so laggy. Again i checked out my buddy’s suunto race 2 the OS performance was soo soo smooth. 4. The build quality was cheap honestly for a $749 watch. 5. The UX of OS felt like it was developed by a colledge graduate. I would not matter if it was a $300 watch, but for a $749 its deal breaker. Everytime i see the watch i felt using a cheap watch. Mainly due to OS performance, look and feel, maps experience. So this issue cannot be fixed by a sw update, because the garmin’s hardware and processor sucks. I think Fenix 8 and a cheap Vivoactive 6 processor are same. Most of the sensors are same. So what are you paying for? Ditch garmin, Suunto, Coros and Amazfit are way better than Garmin in 2025

Suunto has sleep tracking problem. Honestly, i am using FR970 since its launch and had ONE crash, Completed more than 800miles running in the watch. 0 issues. I have a baby which wakes up like 4-5 times in night. The garmin would accurately track when i was awake. The sleep start and end is almost accurate, the only thing is REM sleep stage tracking is very bad. But then garmin only uses your hrv, deep sleep and sleep duration for determining your various health and training insights. So i forgive garmin for that. Lol. The training readings score also reflects my current state. High TR state has resulted me breaking my PRs/PBs and low is just normal. So yes garmin might have some issues, but honestly in terms of accuracy garmin is way ahead of other fitness watch brands. It might take atleast 5 years for coros, suunto to get with Garmin. But then we would see some more new stuff in garmin. So right now Garmin is the best bet.

I had bought AW Ultra 2. I run everyday for min 40mins and 1.5hr on sunday I also wear watch while sleeping With above if i charge to 100% at 10am the next day at 8am the watch is at 55%. With LTE and AOD disabled. This is so sucking IMO. Also i have seen AW battery ages like anything. People complaining about battery capacity of non ultras AW getting reduced to 80% in a 1.5years span. If you need to get same insights that garmin gives out of the box. You would probably need to spend like 60-100$ per year in subscription. This is also sucks. Tried Garmin 970, with same usage + garmin builtin fitness and health insights i see my watch to last easily 8 days at min. Returned my AW Ultra 2 and i am now a FR970 user

I switched from AWU to Fr970 and do not regret it. Garmin is your sport assistant on a wrist while AWU is your smartwatch which extends your phone. If you use daily AW then do not switch. If you more prefer sport features then by all means do this change. I am happy with it because I do not constantly wear it. I use it on training days and normal ones I have classic watch on my wrist.

I had Fenix 7 as my daily driver for last 6 months and in the end decided it was too big and heavy for me and switched to FR 970. Cannot say that this watch is super satisfying, but it is WAY more comfortable to wear every day. I would probably try Fenix 8 sapphire with titanium case/bezel since it is very lightweight, but the price is crazy for this model plus it is still chunky.

>The garmin connect and health features shows (no joke) at least 10x the metrics and analytics that Apple does. Compared to Apple baseline features, sure, but if you use WorkOutDoors ($8 once) for runs and Athlytic or Bevel (admittedly cheap subscriptions) then you get a similar amount of metrics. I think it’s a bit (but not entirely) unfair to compare baseline features when a significant appeal of the Apple Watch is that you have access to a lot more and better 3rd party apps, of which health and training analytics are included. That said, I also find myself justifying an AW for the apps and then the only apps that I end up using are the aforementioned apps that Garmin basically includes baseline. I do think it’s worth mentioning that Garmin menus are like universally terrible compared to Apple and I constantly find myself having to search everywhere for some settings whether it’s on the watch or the app. (If anyone can tell me how to disable weekly achievements for longest run, fastest 5k etc that’d be great). Also really annoying when you try to create a workout or something on the watch and it just has you open the phone app, but then you try to change watch faces and you can only use your watch? I’ve been using both the AWU3 and the FR970 the past week after upgrading from a AW series 8, almost certainly going to keep the FR970 since it just works better for running at my level (100+ mile weeks) but I will miss some of the AW features.

Switched about a month ago, AW S8 -> FR 970. Also tried the ultra 3 for about a week. The main features I was looking for were better battery, a physical lap button, and sapphire glass screen, and U3 and 970 covered all of these. - AW was generally way more fluid to set up and use, and I never had issues finding and adjusting most settings. Garmin UI can really be a pain, but once you use it for a week or so it’s manageable. - It’s very nice having all the data analysis in one spot, while Apple has great data it provides little insights natively and relies on 3rd party apps (I liked Athlytic) that often come with a subscription fee. Even offloading to free sites like runalyze or intervals.icu involved a 3rd party app unless you manually uploaded after every run. Again I don’t love Garmins UI but it syncs with those sites far more easily. - I miss having more fine control over notifications on AW, Garmin is all or nothing as far as i can tell. I can’t have push emails on my phone but not my watch anymore for example. - The flashlight on my 970 is clutch lol - can’t speak to models too much, I’d think the Venu 4 or FR 265 are a good starting point though, I was only looking at 970/epix/fenix

A cheaper option is 955 with the same features as 965 but the same display technology as Fenix 7. A more expensive option is Epix with the same features as Fenix 7, but the same display technology as 965. Those models are now previous models and only expected to get minor feature updates going forward. They will still get bug fixes and security updates. The upside is better stability. The modern solution is FR 970 with Sapphire glass, LED flashlight and elevate 5 HR sensor (like Fenix 7 pro and Epix pro) and microphone + speaker. There is also Fenix 8 which has all the features of 970, but diving till 40m and better golf, but dimmer display (that might not be as big a problem, since all reviewer seem to think 970 is too bright even at lowest setting). But there are rumors about a pro version just around the corner, with LTE and satellite communication on watch. Google proved it is possible with pixel watch 4.

Apple watch ultra 2 is your only real option for longer battery life and esim and the rest of the features you want. You do know that if you have a spotify premium sub you don't have to have an e-sim to listen to music, as you can download playlists and save them onto the device, unfortunately offline spotify is only available on wear os watches (not an option for iPHone as locked to android), apple watches and garmin. Garmin may be a good option as can do offline spotify playlists, and has built in route options or can pull them from strava, syncs data with strava way better than apple does; and the models that offer music all offer at least up to 10 days battery life, and they can offer way more than garmin does in terms of built in training metric and analytics and features. Note offline music + gps on watch is a heavy battery drain - so 1hr or gps activity + offline music and you are looking to recharge every 4-6 days (maybe longer) depending on the model, compared to multiple charge per day on AW (assuming you sleep with it) or daily charge on AWU2 If you want a mic and speaker look at venu 3, FR570, FR970, Venu x1 and Fenix 8 series. Otherwise you could go with vivoactive 5 or 6; FR265, FR965, FR955 and prior fenix 7 (and its variants like Epix 2 etc).

Battery life alone is huge and a reason. To change IMO. Fitness tracking with GPS is better on the garmin than the AW, Flashlight on my FR970 is insanely useful and I use it multiple times a day, People saying they have issues sleep tracking hasn’t been my experience because I rotate the watch so it’s over my wrist/pulse point and I’ve had great luck with that when I sleep, Running and biking without my phone but still being able to access my music library is amazing. I like having both buttons to toggle through stuff and touchscreen, Garmins are more rugged and better built and feel like a tool instead of a toy.

Epix Pro Gen2 is a great watch also but have been discontinued and wont be getting any new updates. Just wanna say, the [Forerunner 970](https://www.reviewni.com/product/B0F8QZ7233) is honestly the best Garmin watch I’ve used for running, hands down. I upgraded from the 945 and wow, this thing just feels like a massive step up. The Amoled display is chef’s kiss, super bright, easy to read, and actually nice to look at even when the sun’s blazing. Flipping through stats while I’m huffing and puffing on a run is so smooth, no lag at all. I haven’t dug deep into the crazy mapping features yet, but everything else about training and recovery is just spot on. The daily suggested workouts are actually really helpful and the recovery info feels legit, especially if you’re training for a big goal like a marathon. Battery life? Honestly, it's a game changer. I charge maybe once every 10 days, even with regular runs, which is wild compared to my old Samsung Watch that needed juice almost every night. Not gonna lie, it’s pricey, but totally worth it if you’re a runner or just want something that actually lasts and works. The design feels super premium too. Pro tip: watch some DesFit or DC Rainmaker vids if you wanna see all the details, they helped me a ton.

The large Venue 3 has decent battery life, a good HR sensor, dual band GPS, and some other perks you might like. It's their best "healthy lifestyle" watch that's not activity-specific like the FR watches. if you're looking for something more sporty, larger face, and maybe you'll like to get more out of the watch later, the FR 965 or, if you want to spend extra on the latest model, the 970.

I’ve been on Fenix MIP since the 7 and just made the jump to the Forerunner 970 AMOLED. I’m mainly training for a marathon right now, so I figured I didn’t really need all the extra bells and whistles of the Fenix. First impressions: * The 970 feels *way* lighter. * The display is crazy bright—almost “hurts-my-eyes-in-bed” bright, but honestly pretty awesome. * Battery life feels just as solid as my old MIP with AOD off. I thought I’d miss glancing at the watch anytime, but the gesture response has been working surprisingly well. Curious—anyone else here made the switch from Fenix to AMOLED? How are you liking it long-term?

Yes, when it detects a new stroke it creates a new lap. So sometimes it gets confused and thinks you’ve changed stroke mid length and creates a new lap count.  I found little benefit to it automatically detecting stroke anyway so it was a useless feature for me.

Well, it is not necessary, but definitely it helps. I’d recommend you to buy at least some basic Garmin Forerunner - it doesn’t cost much, has a decent battery life and is light. Regarding AW, for marathon, you should buy ultra, which is a lot of money. Whoops is more an add-on than running tracker. It’s not very comfortable to run with a phone and the watch shows live metrics, which is very useful. So yes, you should.

I use Edge 540 for cycling and it’s absolutely unbeatable. Now on vacation, I used my FR970 as a substitute and it was surprisingly good. Connected to HRM-Pro chest strap and garmin cadence sensor, it worked perfectly. I hooked it to the handlebar, so I could see the map and even in hot sun it was perfectly readable. It even has a climb data screen! Only the battery was a bit exhausted (still enough to go through the day) after 4 hours ride with navigation, Edge wouldn’t notice it :)

I switched. 1) no need to subscription (I'd have to pay for at least three apps to just remotely mimic what garmin does out of the box - cadence, bevel or athlytic and fitify) 2) ability to connect and use all my gear (I tend to use Engo Eyewear AND Stryd Duo pod together, which is hardly achievable on AW (I never managed to do it). 3) Garmin just works. No fiddling with apps like AW, just select the activity and go. 4) Five buttons! AW tended to behave erratically when sweated with long sleeve. Not Garmin. Or swimming workouts are accurate thanks to those buttons and drill log mode. 5) Battery good enough to withstand long run in winter (AW tended to have problems in 30+ km runs in cold, not Garmin) Forerunner asks me if to go to power saving mode, when there are "just two days left" :) 6) it is iphone independent. I can freely choose whatever phone I like 7) Garmin connect has bad UI, but the data trove is great. 8) ANT+ - lots of gear uses it 9) maps are in the watch offline, no need for data connection, like AW

Interesting, I’m the opposite, I had the 970 and thought it felt cheap and platicy, went to fenix 8 51 mm amoled and am loving it, I enjoy it. One thing I did notice is how much brighter the 970 screen is, it’s silky

I have the FR970 and I exclusively trail run. I love it. I don't have any problem seeing it in direct sunlight. I might get a MIP if I start doing ultra's for the battery life but that is a big if. Mine goes through about 10% per day with pulse ox always on. One thing that really helps is to change the GPS to be the basic setting (can't remember what it is). From what I know, the high precision is really only needed if you are in tall buildings or deep canyons. If you have to ask if you will need the huge battery life of the MIP, the answer is probably no. Want is a different thing.

If you want maps, I guess the FR970 (or the 965?) might be the best choice. Or would breadcrumb navigation be good enough? If so: → FR265 or FR570. Garmins are pretty good at sleep tracking (in my experience), but I wouldn't rely on it for medicinal purposes. They are fitness watches. Battery life on Garmins is multitudes better than on common smart watches like the Apple Watch etc. If don't want to rob a bank before purchasing your new watch (and seriously: who wants that?) and breadcrumb is okay \*and\* you don't mind a watch having being released two years ago, then definitely look into the FR265. The 570 (which is basically its successor) is nice, but very expensive for what it does (not even has proper maps) and has lots of smart functions you don't care for. If you want proper maps: FR970 / 965 are very popular, though the 975 is said to be released sometime this year. Comes with bit of a price bump compared to the breadcrumb variations, though. Gosh, hope I didn't confuse you even more. :-) Edit: Google says AllTrails works fine with Garmin.

It's important for you to know that Garmin will be discontinuing all Forerunner lines, except for the 570 and 970 models. As a result, models like the FR55, FR165, FR265, etc., will no longer receive software updates, and some may be phased out of production. Also, if you plan to sell your watch, any of those discontinued models will lose a lot of value. If you are just a casual sports enthusiast, I recommend the FR570, but if you truly want to take things seriously, buy the FR970

I don't think it's a coincidence that any high-level athlete or ultra marathon runner (if you've met any) use strictly garmin. Not coros and definitely not suunto. Completely agree that the interface is and has always been terrible, specifically the garmin connect app. But no one should be buying a garmin for the smooth watch interface and amazing app. People who buy garmins, specifically fenix, forerunners and now the x1 (a ultra slim alternative, that loses its battery life because that's what happens when the watch isn't uncomfortably thick to sleep with at night) are buying them because they want accurate data about their health metrics. And in that field, you have no idea what you're talking about if you think any brand comes close to producing accurate data about your health. And if it helps with credibility, I work at a sports retail store where I get to test drive all the different high-end fitness watches. The fenix 8 and fr 970 are the pinnacle of sport smartwatches but are unfortunately ridiculously uncomfortable to sleep with. Which is very silly considering half the health metrics and data that helps you train optimally is dependent on your sleep metrics. which is why the x1 is a amazing alternative that doesn't need to be charged every single night, like it's counterpart.

I absolutely *love* Garmin watches — not just for the sleek design and durability, but because I genuinely enjoy collecting stats on myself. There's something incredibly motivating about seeing the data and tracking my progress over time. That said, I’ll be honest: I don’t even fully understand *all* the stats I collect! But that’s part of the journey — learning what the data means and how it can help you improve. My journey with fitness trackers started ages ago with the Nike Fuel Band, and since then, I’ve upgraded every couple of years as my goals and training needs evolved. I used the Forerunner 265 for a good while — it’s a fantastic watch. But when the FR 970 came out, I decided to take the plunge. And honestly? No regrets. It’s absolutely brilliant. That said, for most people — especially depending on your goals — the Forerunner 265 is more than capable. It's packed with features, the display is stunningly bright and crisp, and it's reliable enough to support everything from everyday training to serious endurance work. If I had one piece of advice, it would be this: rather than upgrading every time a new model is released, go for the best and newest model you can afford upfront. Garmin watches are built to last, and if you take the time to understand the metrics, they’ll repay you in spades — not just in running data, but in overall health insights. Beyond the usual pace and heart rate stats, Garmin offers deeper health metrics like sleep tracking, HRV status, and endurance scores — all of which can give you a more complete picture of your wellbeing and recovery. If you’re looking to train smarter, not just harder, these tools are incredibly valuable. Garmin isn’t just about tracking runs — it’s about understanding your body, your effort, and your potential.

The 970 has better maps and navigation hands down. The only pros I see to the Suunto are build quality, battery life, and price. If you can get the 970 for the same price I'd go that route unless you really need the extra battery life. The Garmin ecosystem is better developed, mapping and navigation are superior, built in flashlight, and lighter weight.

No, they are well overpriced for what you are getting. Outdated, laggy, buggy software, with watches that for the most part are made of plastic/resin and look cheap. The Connect app is a disaster. You will need a chest strap if you are interested in accurate heart rate data for activities. The bluetooth antennae range is short and has issue connecting for many - android and iPhone users alike. Yes they give you a great deal of data, is it fun to look at, absolutely, is it needed, absolutely not. There is so much of it that folks either don't understand or don't know what to do with it so they never action it. Further if the heart rate data is not accurate or consistent is any of the data valuable anyway? Garmin is falling behind its competitors, changing its focus in an attempt to add more smartwatch feature - doing so poorly it seems - and not staying true to being a great fitness tracker. They are relying more and more on their reputation and their prices are going up and up for watches that are going down in quality and usability due to software issues/bugs. Just have a look at all the issues that occurred when the Fenix 8 was released, the FR970/570 and VenuX1 are currently having software issues too.

Hi. I am not a runner. I walk and hike (every day). I did a ton of research earlier this year between Coros, Suunto, and Garmin. I moved away from an Apple Series 9 (loved my Apple rings being closed every day and the ecosystem I was already in). Started tracking on Strava the first of the year when I started looking to move away from the crappy battery life of Apple Wearables. I ended up with a Garmin 965. I love my watch. I miss a few things about Apple, but, short of making a watch that lasts more than 72 hours on battery, I will not be going back to Apple. I did play around with Coros. It was ok. The app is more user-friendly than Garmin and tracks about the same data/stats. If money isn't an issue, get the Garmin Fenix 8 with solar (I believe that is the one that is not AMOLED). Or snag an older 955 or something. My 965 is fabulous. With tracking at least 1.5 hours on GPS throughout the week and at least one six-hour hike on weekends, and get 10 or so days per charge. The Fenix I tried was a tad heavy. I find the 965 to fit and feel much like my Apple Watch. A hiking buddy switched from a 955 to a 970 a few months ago and LOVES it. Said it is worth the drop of a few days of battery for the new features and comfort. Both of us have purchased third-party watch bands (velcro). Makes it so awesome. Love it! In short, get the 970 and set it as the black and white colors for your screen.

There is Garmin Swim (IMHO essentially it is a ForeRunner, but swim has been put in focus; review here https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/10/garmin-openwater-review.html). However, modern Garmin watches are all able to track pool swim as well as gym workouts (you might have to set exercises later in the app if you want to track muscle groups affected). Essentially ForeRunner is for runners mostly, Forerunner 9xx is focused on triathlon, Fenix is mostly for outdoors - but again, all of them can do almost the same. I’d go with Fenix if budget allows.

Changed my mind... I think without an explicit indoor rowing activity profile and VO2max, the extra analysis stuff on the Forerunner won't really work. Not sure if any of the watches have that. Forerunners are great even if you don't run. None of the watches are great for the gym btw. For hiking you basically want an altimeter (which all new watches have) and maybe maps (which only the most premium watches do). I think the main advantage the Instinct has over the Forerunner is that it comes with Garmin Explore integration (for offline realtime mapping with the companion app on the phone). Only the Forerunner 9xx series support this. I think an Instinct 2 or 3 will be a great choice for your use

When I stop an activity and hit save, it's uploaded to Strava before I can even get the garage door open. All true except advanced metrics. They are also present in Fenix (it has even more features for hiking) and Instinct. Forerunner is not more advanced. The rugedness is mostly about the bezel. In fenix and instinct it has a rim which gives extra protection to the screen. But that means rugged watches are more bulky what can be a problem in the gym. I think if you primarily want to track those workouts and your alternative is not getting an Apple Watch, then it might be overkill in terms of money spent. I was coming from a forerunner and knew I wanted an Apple Watch so was going between an S10 and ultra 2 and don’t regret getting the ultra 2. Like you, I wanted the extra battery life and preferred the more rugged look

You can get a Fenix 7 Pro for less than that from John Lewis at the moment. It depends what you want from the watch. If you want sturdy and looks good then go for a Fenix, if you want lighter then go Forerunner. You won't get a Fenix 8 in that budget but the 7 Pro is still very good for the money.

I've been an Apple Watch user for more than 7 years. Currently have Ultra 2. But I just got a Garmin Forerunner and love it. It's a refreshing change with superior data for me. On a practical note, I can use Spotify in the Garmin and it hasn't glitched on me once. Apple Watch is a disaster with playing music at the same time as running and this has held true for years over several different watches, watchOS versions and headphones. I like to row and the Garmin counts the strokes per minute whereas the Apple watch gives you no data. The built in training plans on Garmin are much better than having to pay for a subscription to Runna or Fitness+. The recovery insights through the day are better for me than Apple and don't require a third party app. The Find my iPhone equivalent feature on Garmin works better for me. Good luck with your AW but I'm enjoying the Garmin experience and I say that as a diehard Apple user.

If you really end up getting into running, I would not suggest Vivioactive 5. The pace shown on the watch is NOT the pace you are running. You won’t see your actual pace until after you run and sync to the app. I’ve learned a way to know “appropriately” what pace I’m running by setting up the watch with .25 mile laps so it will show me the .25 average. Also, I start a separate run activity for both slower warmup and another one for the slower cool down. For weight workouts in the gym, I just use the cardio activity but it’s really just to see approximately how much time and calories I’m supposed earning. Pool workouts are decent for counting laps, just one lap off. Maybe the low-level Forerunner would have been a better option for my running. I’ve only had mine a few months but it’s durable. I’ve worn it doing lots of hiking, over rocks etc. But I’m also a little bit careful.

Yes because the Apple Watch battery is unlikely to make the distance of a marathon, let alone an Ultra (depending on how recent your watch is). Ask me how I know; lol. I trained with my Apple Watch but knew from my long runs that it wasn’t gonna make the distance of the full marathon so wore a Garmin Foreunner (an older style one at that that I found on Marketplace!) for race day. It didn’t even get below 50% battery!

The forerunner is the same internals and same 1.4" OLED screen as all the other high end garmin watches. The heart sensor is elevate 4 instead of elevate 5. Otherwise its the same watch with different styling. You can put whatever watch face on the watch you prefer. You want it to look like any other watch, just use that watch face. Just don't get the extremely outdated MIP screen that the zealots keep pretending is a good choice even though it doesn't save any battery anymore and is only offered on the obsolete watches. Some people can't afford the new OLED screens so they want to say they are inferior, when they are just poor and can't afford current tech that is obviously better. It really comes down to the styling of the watch case, if you want it to be super oversized 51mm or normally only slightly oversized 47mm or you want the colored accents or the flashlight or whatever. Its a personal styling decision at this point, get what makes you happy.

Just about all the Garmin watches do what you're looking for. The only thing with the Instinct is that it's a pretty specific look. It’s not though - and even if it was nobody wants that. The overwhelming majority of AW sold are non-cellular. I get notifications on my Garmin and that’s all I really need my watch to do in addition to fitness tracking. Battery life is hugely important for a wearable - I have an AW and I never use it because the poor battery life means I just don’t put it back on after taking it off. My forerunner is ugly and plasticky but the battery life lasts a really nice length of time and it is much better than AW at fitness tracking and I still get my notifications. I wouldn’t switch back to android, I really like my iPhone, but Apple has been pretty stagnant in innovation for best part of 10 years now. The Apple Watch just isn’t a particularly good product. It’s not a bad product, but it’s not good either.

I would go for either a venu or a forerunner depending on whether you want to use it for running or more general metrics. Both will suit your needs well but the forerunner will prompt you more to run and has more alerts etc on that department. Also decide on the size of your wrist, I had a bad experience with the 165s as it didn’t measure my hr properly because it was too big so if you have a small wrist go for one of the S versions!

For a long time, I only ran with my phone and used the Map My Run app, and then switched to Strava. I used live tracking on the apps as I ran, but I didn’t have a watch to see how it was going in real time. Both apps have voiceovers that tell you when you hit a mile and your pace.  I ran my first half marathon and had no clue what my heart rate was, which is what made me get a little more serious afterwards. I got a cheap Garmin forerunner to start with, and moved on from there! So you don’t necessarily need anything, but if you get more serious with it, a watch is nice to have! A running belt like Flipbelt or SPI belt is handy to carry your phone.

For someone who is new and cares mostly about sleep tracking and GPS activities it’s honestly all kind of the same. You can run with an Instinct and you can hike with a forerunner. Choose based off of look, price, battery life for your particular activities. A Fenix or Instinct pretty much does it all and with great battery life. Doesn’t really matter in the end unless you care about very specific advanced metrics. I personally think most of the Forerunners are ugly so I gravitate towards Instinct because I’m also not willing to overpay for a Fenix when there’s other brands that cover 90% of a Fenix for half the cost. If you want to research alternatives: If you’re looking at an Instinct, check out Coros Nomad. If you’re looking at a Fenix check out Suunto Race 2 or Vertical 2 or upcoming Coros Apex 4.

For almost every Garmin wach you can download TennisAI app from garmin store which would capture and recognize your strokes, measure power etc. If you are interested there are two versions of the app and I would recommend to check compatible devices list from the latest one as it has improved interface and match score tracking features ( https://apps.garmin.com/apps/0073ddf4-3ec7-436d-a598-d88cfd0d583a?tid=1 ). The watch shall be worn on the hand that holds the racket so ehen it comes to a device if you buy a havy model like Fenix or Epix (>80gr ) at first it will take you a few sessions to get used to it but if you buy something lighter like venu, forerunner or fenix S version it will not interfere with the game at all.  Also the square devices are in General poorly supported by developers.

I mainly use my range finder though so I don’t often use the watch for golf. I was thinking about making the switch to a more golf forward version and the epix pro is the top of my list. It has unbelievable golf functionality but is also a great fitness watch. The only better “golf feature” garmin is the S62 or similar, but they aren’t as convenient for fitness tracking IMO. I have a Garmin Fenix (on the $$$ side) but I wear it every day as my normal watch too and have had zero issues making the switch. However there’s heaps in the range, I love accuracy, maps, long battery and lots and lots of data so I can overthink every run - so Fenix it is! The forerunners are great and the vivoactives are a good mid range model. There’s other brands like Suunto, Polar etc. For true accuracy on any wrist watch you may need a chest monitor. But if you really like your Apple Watch I found it pretty good unless you’re somewhere with not much reception

It does not sound like you do running or other outdoor activities, so I d recommend a vivoactive 5 or 6 mate. However, something like a basic Forerunner could also give you all plus some running support for a share of the vivo price. I started my first one with a vivomove HR which only gave me steps and basic gym rep counting (that was 8 years ago) then vivoactive 3 and now a FR965 because I do hike a lot and started running recently plus all the gym.

For running, the **Forerunners** win because they’re lighter, have better training tools (readiness, load, recovery, VO₂, etc.), and give you more run-specific metrics. The **Instinct/Fenix** are better for hiking/backpacking since they’re tougher, with longer battery and more rugged features. Animated workouts are more of a nice to have, useful if you like guided bodyweight or gym sessions, but most people don’t rely on them. Daily suggested workouts are hit or miss: they’re good for structure but not something to blindly follow. Maps are genuinely handy if you do trails or long hikes; on runs they’re mostly good for keeping you on a planned route. The 970 only records ECG if you start it manually, it doesn’t passively check like an Apple Watch. Smart features: you’ll see texts and calls, but RCS isn’t supported (just standard SMS/notifications). The mic/speaker are fine for quick replies or answering a call in a pinch, but not something you’d want to use all the time. Why Garmin? Mostly the depth of training metrics, reliability, and ecosystem, Coros and Suunto are good but Garmin still has the most polished data!!

I received an Apple Watch from my friend as a gift years ago. It did a lot of things reasonably well but it had limited battery life and I found many of the features distracting. Eventually the watch cracked after falling off a nightstand. I switched to a Garmin forerunner and loved it, good battery life, good athletic tracking, if I wanted I could control my music or read but not respond to a text (I have notifications off), I could also use it as a HR monitor for my bike computer (or track a ride with it but I like a HUD). A few years later I upgraded to a Fenix 6 and it’s still going strong 5 years later. I would never go back to an Apple Watch unless it could meet the same battery life expectations and was less easy to damage.

I had a 255, also a similarly slim wrist, and recently "upgraded" to a Vivoactive 6. Upgrade in quotes because I'm aware a lot of people don't consider that an upgrade, but it definitely was for me, for things I cared about, and ultimately it's only things you care about that matters. For me the biggest problem was how big and heavy the 255 was. I believe it's very similar size/weight to the 265, and the 955 is even larger/heavier (by a bit). I am also primarily a runner, but not a super serious one (one or two half marathons a year, a few weeks/months of half-assed training). The tracking and training features on the dirt cheap Vivoactive is more than enough for me, and I don't miss the more advanced features from the Forerunner at all. In fact, I still don't know what those are. I suspect very few people wearing Forerunners really benefit from the very specialized running features that the more "lifestyle" Garmin watches don't have, and I regretted falling into that trap and getting that Forerunner a few years ago. Either that or this sub is full of hardcore elite runners. On the Vivoactive, the OLED screen is much more beautiful than the MIP, and the new interface is so much more intuitive to use. The size also looks much less comical on my wrist. It's also much lighter, which I didn't really appreciate until getting this one. It "only" has 10 days battery life, but I just charge it when I notice it going below 20% when sat at my desk, and it really doesn't bother me at all. The 255 was purely a training tool. The Vivoactive gives me joy to wear and look at, in addition to being just as good a training tool for me. But that's a very subjective thing. If you don't like the Vivoactive aesthetic, there's also the new Venu 4/4S that looks more premium. So I think it mostly depends on whether you actually need the additional features. The map is the only feature I would care about in the 9xx, but I wasn't going to pay so much for that, when I never do long runs in unfamiliar places without my phone anyways.

If your priorities are Ant+ and a streamlined UI, you might consider returning your Fenix and going with a cheaper device from the Forerunner line. The Fenix line is the more "fully featured" option, but with that comes cost and a more clunky UI. The last two generations of Forerunners will all have Ant+ for less than half of the price.

If you want to get healthy and get phone notifications and *maybe* do music or something, get a Garmin. Instinct 2 (gives music controls but requires a phone for the music itself) or a used Forerunner (I believe they're done of the cheapest models that do on-board music, Spotify, etc.) or what have you. No smartwatch does swimming or lifting particularly well, imo. The development of swimming software has always been secondary to the watch’s software for biking and running. That said, i do use and find acceptable the swim function on my garmin (I’ve had a swim 2, forerunner, and fenix). I don’t pay attention to stroke detection so I can’t speak to that but it does everything else you’re asking for.  For lifting, paper and pen is still king. I track my lifting workouts on my watch so i get “credit” for them and the workouts help me reach some of the silly little “challenges” garmin has, but it’s too fiddly, prone to errors, and doesn’t provide me the same information I get by writing down my lifts & how I felt.

I have a Whoop band that I really like for tracking activities. It’s not a watch - doesn’t have a face to it at all - but I think it does a good job tracking sleep/activities and horse riding is an option for activity on it. You don’t pay up front for it - it’s a $35/month service fee. So while not a big expense up front, it obviously adds up over time, which is not necessarily for everyone.  I wear a garmin forerunner on my other wrist too. I like that as well, but I have to say I prefer the app and the data provided by the whoop. I basically only use my forerunner for the actual watch face at this point.  Edit: I just checked whoops website and they do offer a $399 up front fee for 2 year membership.

Switched 5 years ago. Echoing the comment here: this is **not** a smartwatch, but a **sports/adventure watch.**  You won’t be reading your emails, getting texts, or calling a Uber, and the screen is nowhere near as responsive as the AW. If you’re looking for a phone one your wrist, Garmin is not for you. But if you’re training for a sports race, anything from a 5k to an ultramarathon, or even just trying to stay generally fit, the load tracking and suggested workout feature alone is worth it. The battery of data signals you get to tailor and improve your training is worth the switch alone, to a Foretunner or Epix or Fenix. Not even getting started on navigation in the mountains, which is really good — if you hike, camp, trail run, cycle, or generally enjoy being out, you will love your Epic or Fenix.

IMHO Apple does fitness tracking better than Garmin. Esp. sleep tracking is more accurate, plus you get ECG on most Apple Watches. In the US, blood oxygen tracking is currently disabled for new Apple Watches. Btw. I use both, Apple Watch and Garmin (one on each wrist). IMHO, Apple Watch does better health tracking and offers a wider range of devices to contribute data. As well as more apps. Apple really shines in sleep tracking and I have the feeling that Apple’s wrist based HR sensor is better than Garmin’s. I am using a Forerunner, so it’s not the newest Garmin tech, but my Apple Watch is a Series 8, so not the newest gen either). I really like Garmin for training. And the HRM Pro Plus is the best heart rate monitor I ever had.

What nags me most is that Garmin has x variants of their OS and you never know for sure, which watch gets which software features. Like training readiness is available on the Forerunner 265, but not on the 255 - although the hardware would absolutely permit it. Apple on the other hand usually ships software-only features to older watches that are still supported by the current version of watchOS. The reason why I also have a Garmin Forerunner is button operation and the OOTB training features. Apple needs really to learn that touch screen operation isn't ideal when you do certain sports.

I've not yet had an issue with my Garmin Forerunner resetting during activities. The most important decisions to make are determining your budget, the activities you genuinely want to track, your goals, and your needs for multi-app use on a watch face (be honest with yourself - don't fall into traps of spending more based on unlikely "what ifs?". For me, I wanted to keep it simple - track runs, gym activities, steps, and heart-rate/pace trends. As a beginner, I decided on one of the lower-end Garmin's for their strong GPS and because it was good enough to meet 99% of my needs. I'll use money saved to buy the inevitable new, needed pair of running shoes.

Basically any modern smartwatch will do this. Your axes of choice are ecosystem, battery life, and price. The basic Apple Watch will do what you want, but because you’re using the GPS, the battery will be dead mid-day. I do not recommend any Apple Watch but the Ultra for an athlete or active person because of the awful battery life. If you want something cheaper than the Ultra, I’d look at the Coros Pace and cheaper Garmin Forerunner options. They’ll both cost about half and are really good products with roughly 5-10x battery life vs the basic Apple Watch.

I have an AWU: it’s a smart watch w/ mostly useless rudimentary fitness tracking metrics that don’t match at all with what training peaks, intervals, Strava, or Garmin Connect give for metrics & stats. Also, battery lasts less than 24 hours if you actually use your watch for tracking rides. I had a Garmin Forerunner: It was a legit fitness tracker that has useful metrics that align w/ 3rd party training platforms and also has some basic useful smart watch features. Seamless integration w/ Garmin Edge bike computer stats as well. When I upgrade watches, I’m going back to Garmin because I prioritize the fitness features more than the often annoying & useless smart watch novelty features that Apple caters towards for the general public. What do you prioritize? Novelty smart watch features (Apple), or useful training metrics (Garmin).

If you move all day, whoop will track it. Whether or not you are doing an activity whoop will count any increase in heart rate towards your "strain", and will give you sleep recommendations and adjust recovery based on that. The automatic activity tracking and auto sleep tracking are great. It's the most hands off device out there. Garmin only adds load when you are tracking an activity, so it can miss a lot if it's not a planned workout. But when you do track activities, it gives you much more information. Whoop is not a good activity tracker. It's a health tracker. You can really only see your heart rate zones for the activity. You can't see progression over time or compare it to previous workouts. For that you need garmin or Strava or something else. From what I can tell, Garmin is amazing at activities and good enough with health, while whoop does great with health but is poor for activities. Not sure if this helps, but it seems like there is no perfect option - Im going to have to make this same decision once my subscription is up.
