I also wear the Oura ring (gen 4, on right ring finger). Mine seems fine, I don’t bring my phone on the bench though so it’s all in device tracked and I know that can cause some gaps in tracking but it seems to get everything pretty well

it’s literally so bad, when i’m doing HIIT workouts/completely out of breath/can’t speak it always says I either spent a majority of the time in zone zero (which is supposedly “at rest or moving very slowly”!!) or it “fails to detect HR data” even though i click record workout. and i have gen 4! i put in a support request a few times and they are supposed to send a free replacement but i feel like it’s just an inherent issue

The whoop subscription is so expensive, that was what sold me on the Oura. I’ve had my Oura 4 for eight months and love it so much.

I wear both my Garmin Fenix 7S and Oura 4 24/7, but I only track runs with the Garmin and only care about the sleep/cycle/wellness metrics from my Oura. They each serve their purpose, and I like having both of them.

I’ve had every Oura ring. My biggest problem with it was that I had to charge it three times a week. I then saw that the Ringcon 2 had a 12-day battery life. I ordered one, and I absolutely love it. I have used both the Oura Ring 4 and the Ringcon 2 at the same time, and the stats seem very similar. I’m now Ringcon over Oura.

Edit to add that I have the gen 4. I’ve never had any other version. It is okay. Not great, not bad. I’ve had mine since December. I also have an Apple Watch so I use both. Pros: I do like the sleep information. I feel like it tracks my sleep better than my Apple watch. The battery life is impressive. I usually charge mine when I shower, but I went on a week long cruise a few weeks ago and I didn’t bring my charger. It didn’t die. I do think the data overall is good - I like seeing the trends and seeing how my day to day activity affects my health. I’ve learned a lot about my habits (I’m very data-driven). Similarly, the cycle tracking is really nice. We are TTC and having data to help us with that is also helpful. Even if I wasn’t trying to get pregnant, I would appreciate cycle details. Cons- The wear and tear on my gold ring is pretty significant. I know it’s a wearable tech piece and not actual jewelry, but mine is pretty dinged up for only a few months’ use. I do wear it on my right hand (middle finger) but it looked really silly on my left with my wedding ring and I already have small hands so two rings like that on one hand was not a good look overall. The gold color overall is very yellow. It has faded but is still not really close to my actual gold rings, and I don’t love that. Obviously if you don’t choose gold this won’t affect you. The activity monitoring/step counter is garbage. I just don’t use it and instead import my data from my watch. The fact that there’s a subscription to utilize many aspects really turns me off. If I didn’t have it paid for through my HSA I wouldn’t have it at all. Other notes: I don’t really understand the tagging system or utilize it fully so I may be missing value there. I feel like it’s pretty bulky for my hand, but I understand that tech has to fit somewhere. It took me a bit to get used to it on my hand, and sometimes when I drive and there’s more pressure on it, it can bother me. I don’t know how much stock I put into the “my health” area - things like sleep chronotype resilience - but it is still neat to see. Overall I give the ring 7/10. It has features I like, but if I had to stop wearing it for whatever reason not much would really change. I do like having more data, but the things I actively seek in wearable tech is more related to activity tracking. For the price I do think the quality is not great. If you have any specific questions I’m happy to try to help!

Left garmin for my AW Ultra 3, no regrets here. When I run, I train with Runna, so I don’t need Garmin Coach. I use WorkOutDoors if I need routes/maps. And I sleep with an Oura Ring, so I don’t care about Garmin’s training load, stress, body battery, or even Apple’s version of that plus any sleep tracking that either of those do. Don’t care about the 2 day battery, I just chuck it on charge before bed because I don’t sleep with it, but then I wear it all day. Easy and works for me. Garmin’s interface and user experience (on the watch and especially the app) is poor. Their software is often buggy. Their support isn’t always the best, and their update support isn’t great either. The new Fenix 8’s are also super overpriced. For much cheaper the AW also offers cellular, plus a better user experience and can do *mostly* everything a Garmin does. Heart rate monitoring is also more accurate on AW. So for the price of a Fenix 8, I got an AW Ultra 3 and Oura Ring 4. Superior sleep tracking capabilities, cellular and data, and great fitness tracking.

I’m actually going the other way: Fenix 6X Pro Solar to Apple Watch Ultra 3. I’ve always disliked the Garmin connect app interface, it’s just gross to navigate and use. There’s been a ton of bugs I’ve experienced with my 6X both on the watch itself and with the connection to the Garmin Connect app. In general the software experience with Garmin feels clunky and buggy. Most people don’t care I suppose since it (usually) works for just tracking workouts. The new Fenix line is way overpriced in my opinion, where the AWU is looking much more appealing. For the same price as a Fenix 8, I’m rocking an Oura Ring 4 for sleep tracking and AW Ultra 3 for everything else. It is far nicer to track your sleep with an unobtrusive ring rather than a bulky and uncomfortable sports watch (whether Garmin or Apple Watch). The AW also has satellite and cellular, which is even more expensive with the Fenix 8 Pro. It’s a goodbye to Garmin for me. I’ll keep my Fenix 6X if I ever need to do a super long gps recording, still works.

I compared the Apple Watch Ultra 2, Oura Gen 4 and RingConn Gen 2 over a 20 day period very recently. Assuming the watch is the best at tracking sleep I compared both rings to the watch. Averaging the data I found the following: RingConn: Differences more (less) REM 26 minutes Deep 71 minutes Light (163) minutes Total (66) minutes Oura: Differences more (less) REM 4 minutes Deep 1 minute Light (50) minutes Total (45) minutes I really wanted the RingConn but sleep tracking is my priority. I use the watch for everything else. I returned the ring. These are my results and nothing more. Hopefully the patent issue will get resolved and next year I’ll look at RingConn again.

I also wear an Apple Watch Ultra 2 and I wouldn’t say a smart ring adds very much over what the AWU already provides, in terms of data. It’s more about how it aggregates and displays the data that’s more helpful. I really wanted to get better about tracking my sleep and wearing my giant Ultra watch to bed wasn’t comfortable so I decided to get a smart ring. I got the UltraHuman ring which is priced similarly to Oura 4 but with no subscription and I can tell you I wore it for 2 months and had nothing but issues. Looking deeper into Reddit, I found I was not alone by any means, in fact, it seems that the majority of users have reliability and connectivity issues. I finally had enough and threw the ring away and got an Oura 4 and it’s so much better, not only in terms of reliability / build quality, but in how it displays data and sets goals based on your data. I can’t speak for RingConn but UltraHuman sets impossible goals and activity metrics that do not move on a sliding scale. As an example, I slept poorly the other night and Oura recognized my recovery was low and lowered my activity goal to align with what’s realistic when you’re overtired and you didn’t have time to recover. It’s encouraging that even on bad days, goals can be reached by making them realistic. I’d much rather pay a subscription for something that works well than try to save $70 a year by getting something that won’t work half the time anyway. Buy nice or buy twice (like I did). Worth noting is both UltraHuman and RingConn were just banned from selling their rings in the US after October 21st in an ITC ruling that found they had infringed on Oura’s patent.

A few weeks ago I mentioned I’d be racing an olympic distance triathlon with a stack of wearables strapped to me. Well, I did it, and here are the (raw) results. **TL;DR:** Raced a tri with WHOOP, Polar360, Helio strap, Garmin Instinct 3, and Oura Ring 4. Polar was the most reliable, WHOOP decent but spiky in swim, Helio finicky about placement, Garmin surprisingly messy, Oura useless for sport. For anyone not familiar, Olympic distance triathlon is: 1. 1.5km swim 2. 40km bike 3. 10km run On the right arm I had the (from top) **WHOOP MG, Polar360, and Helio strap** stacked up. On the left, the **Garmin Instinct 3** and **Oura Ring 4**. I looked ridiculous (but not more than everyday since I wear them all constantly), but I was curious to see how they’d compare across swim, bike, and run in real race conditions. [Hybrid athlete xD](https://preview.redd.it/9cm22jzi1rmf1.jpg?width=2784&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1612dd2a8e3c8635dce07ca55eebcdae111b9dc5) Here’s how it went: * **Swim:** I got both legs cramped at 1km mark. Thoughts of DNF were running through my head, but I really wanted to see the comparison (:P), so I prevailed and swam the last 500m with my arms only, dragging my uselessly cramped legs behind me. * WHOOP thought I was hitting 200 bpm most of the time (I wasn’t). * Polar, Helio, Garmin seem all decent, in similar range, although knowing my HR from many other swims, I'd say that Polar was the most accurate. * Oura basically zoned out for the full race. * **Bike:** When I finally got my legs moving again, the bike leg went smoothly. Hit a steady 34km/h avg pace. I could've pushed more, as my HR was between 150-160, but I was afraid of losing my legs again. * Helio struggled at first, underreporting HR badly (I noticed on my bike computer that it was connected to), until I moved it higher up my arm mid-ride. After that it snapped back in line. * Polar and WHOOP held strong. * Garmin was all over the place with noisy spikes. . * **Run:** This was actually the easiest leg for all wearables, and myself. By the end of the run the different devices were surprisingly aligned, except Oura that was again useless. https://preview.redd.it/ksy9407u2rmf1.png?width=1041&format=png&auto=webp&s=1166550aacc3f9fa1a3ef6103ac11df633f907f9 https://preview.redd.it/fb61lg483rmf1.png?width=1054&format=png&auto=webp&s=a5c716a5d4c68f3b38dffa08797792eac9cd2045 Overall impressions: * **Polar360** was the most reliable of the bunch. I was definitely not expecting that! * **WHOOP** is decent but not flawless, especially in water. It had the best arm placement of all the wearables, so there should be no excuses (I know some people will find many). * **Amazfit Helio** started with a disadvantage of being the lowest on the wrist, when moved up, was decent. In my opinion better than WHOOP, worse than Polar360. * **Garmin Instinct 3** really surprised me with how messy the HR data was. I am very negatively surprised with these results.  * **Oura Ring 4** confirmed what most of us already know: great for sleep and recovery, not for sport. My current band rating: 1. Polar360 2. Helio strap 3. WHOOP 4. Garmin 5. Oura Why did I do this? Mostly curiosity — and partly because I’m working on a side project (reThrive) where we’re digging into how different devices capture performance and recovery. I figured some of you here would appreciate raw, messy comparisons like this too. Next on my list is to look at how each of these devices calculates **recovery scores** over the last month and see if they align at all. If you’re interested, I’ll share those results too. I will also be racing a half-marathon later this month, also wearing them all. And will post the update here as well.

Is anyone else's ring not picking up their walking/running routes AT ALL??? I've tried keeping the app open and everything and it won't track my routes. I wouldn't really care about that except for the fact that when it doesn't pick up the route, it doesn't tell you how far you went in terms of mileage. Super disappointing.

OP, I know you are likely an Android user, I am as well, but I'm always looking at what else is out there as technology as a whole interest me. If you watch the videos from The Quantified Scientist on YouTube, the Pixel Watches are of course up there with his measure of data accuracy. Time and time again though the one that stands out above the pack seems to be the Apple watches and their heart rate sensor. Have you ever looked into an Apple Watch? There is a very popular third party app called Athlytic which can give an approximation of VO2 max. I've read time and again that the app gives a very much Whoop like experience. For context and whatever this is worth I'm currently wearing a Pixel Watch 3 45mm LTE and an Oura Ring 4 as well. I'm just fascinated by tech and how it can help improve our lives I'm just not as dialed in to my fitness currently as you are.

I did about 16.5km of walking yesterday, wearing both my Garmin Enduro 3 and my PW4. What I saw in comparing GPS and distances between the two matched what the YouTube reviewers have said--the GPS on the PW4 isn't currently as good as Garmin, but it's not bad, either. It's close enough that it's good enough for me, unlike tracking activities with my Oura Ring 4's app, which uses the phone's mediocre GPS and resulted in a \*20%\* error compared to my Garmin on both of my test walks. One thing I think that PW4 does better than Garmin is the number of calories and exercise strain, etc., you get for walking. Garmin has always been too stingy with walking, hiking, working hard in the yard, etc. DC Rainmaker as commented on that, too, so it's not just me. On my main, 13.4km fast-paced, walk yesterday, Garmin gave me just over 1200 calories. Fitbit gave me 1597 calories, which I feel is closer to reality, given how fast I was walking and where my HR was. The PW4's sleep tracking seems quite good so far, too, based on just my first two nights. That's another area where I feel Garmin isn't the greatest. I think it might even be doing better than my Oura Ring 4, and that's saying something (not like any of them are even close to 100% accurate, though). I guess that was my "long-winded" way of saying that so far, my experience with the PW4 matches closely with the reviews that are out there as of last night. I'm excited to see how it does tracking my next ride.

You're most welcome. Update: After much research in this domain, I decided to get an Oura Ring 4 and so far the features have made a big impact on my sleep habits and overall health, regrading stress, daily activity, ideal sleep time window, understanding body chronotype, sleep apnea detection etc. The insights and suggestions provided by Oura 4 are progressive and actionable and are not designed to "provide a challenge" (typical Samsung approach to health and fitness) but rather a progression towards the ideal recommended state. The only hard pill to swallow when it comes to Oura ring is the $5.99 monthly subscription, which for me personally, is easily recouped through credit card promotions and cashbacks, over a month.

I have the Gen4 and I love it. Check it multiple times a day. I think one of the coolest features is that it will alert you when there are minor or major strains on your body….anytime I’ve seen it when I feel fine I end up getting sick within days. It’s incredible. Also if you have sleep issues (I have a nightmare disorder) it’s great at showing that I might have gotten “good” sleep, but it recognizes that my readiness isn’t also “good” due to the nightmares.

No! I have an ultra also. I just spoke with Oura this AM. Oura has caused issues with their latest firmware updates and have been unable to resolve for several months. It is wide spread. They just fully refunded me after 8 months of ownership for the ring, warranty, and membership because the features they advertised, long battery and sleep tracking, have been disabled by poor quality firmware and software. It will not be fixed any time soon. I’d say stay away.

I have the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Upgraded from an Apple Watch SE. I couldn’t wear the Apple Watch SE for sleep tracking. The battery life (new) was terrible. I would wear it all day (4am-6pm) and come home to it at 15% at best. Over the next few years the battery degraded and made me upgrade. I couldn’t go a full day before it was on low power mode and 2% battery. This caused me to not be able to wear it to sleep. The first year, I tried. As soon as I got home, I put it on the charger. Slept with it. Then woke up to it at 30% after tossing and turning from something being on my wrist. Caught under my pillow. Would catch my blanket. I even hit my wife once with it in my sleep. I said no more. Then over the next few years my sleep has gotten erratic. I decided to get the Oura 3. Can’t even tell it’s there except when I go to roll over and a red light is blasting me in the face from it tracking my movements lol… hardly noticeable unless you bring your hand to your face but that happens when I adjust my pillow. No biggie. It’s red. Doesn’t blind me. Anyways. Tracked my sleep over the last year VERY well and detailed. The only issue is that the ring size I got, must have been a smaller battery because I barely got 3 days before needing to charge it. Got into the habit of just slapping it on the charger every night before I showered. Could have been the cause of the battery crapping out on me just over a year of ownership. Luckily I got the extended warranty and they just give you a link to purchase a new one. To my surprise, it was a link that worked for the Oura 4. Just got it in and so far so good. No issues here. I do recommend removing it before doing any yard work or weight lifting. It gets in the way and will get scratched. It also will scar your phone screen since it’s titanium. Found that out the hard way. TLDR; watch is too bulky for sleep tracking. Ring is slim. Works. And has decent support. The longevity may not be there though.

I've used a Whoop 4 together with an AWU and Oura Ring for years. Last year i ditched the Whoop and kept the Oura (on Gen 4 now) and AWU. I'm happy with the change, Oura is very active and innovative with adding features and the metrics are excellent and also useful for training. The AWU is nice as allround smartwatch but it has limitations for health and sports metrics. It will (for example) only sample your HRV on random points during nighttime, which impacts the usefulness for recovery (third party apps can only use the same data, so i would not rely too much on apps like Athletic). If you are mainly into sports and care less for comprehensive health or smartwatch features, Garmin is still the better option. For health it is hands down Oura for me.

I’ve tried the Oura ring 3rd gen but returned it because I just noticed it on my finger too much. I have skinny fingers and the ring was just thick and heavy. I bought the 4th gen yesterday and there’s a big difference; this one’s a keeper. It’s much lighter and thinner, doesn’t have protruding sensor nubs like the 3rd gen. It recognized activity which was just me walking, playing fetch with my dog at the park where I was walking a bit faster than normal. I found that its ability to detect a change in my movement and heart rate, even a minor one, and to detect and label a walk was a bit surprising. It also captured my first nights rest spot on with the sleep and wake times and I didn’t notice the ring at any point. With 18 sensors versus the previous 8, I expect it to be consistently more accurate and helpful for my needs as it captures more data. I’ve also used Whoop off and on for years, the two most recent gen’s, where I used to like their data better. Oura has improved, though, and for a $5.99/ month membership versus $30 with Whoop, I’m gonna keep this ring and its membership for the foreseeable future.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Oura Gen4. First thing I look at when I open my eyes. I love when my numbers are great but the not so great feedback gives me anxiety. I’m 53, and I guess I walk and workout way more than baseline, and sleep far less than I’m supposed to. Sometimes I get a pretty good sleep score even though I know I had a horrible night sleep. Every single time I have any alcohol I get the dreadful “major signs” which has only been a few times in the few months I’ve had it. I might just take it off next time I go have a few drinks, lol. I do like that my cardio capacity is peak, resilience is strong, heart age is 4yrs younger but how will I feel if those metrics change? Sauna/hottub even long hot relaxing baths show up as stressful when in actuality they are very relaxing. I’m still wearing it so I guess I love it a little more than I want to admit to myself.

My Oura Gen 4 broke. I contacted the AI bot chat immediately after it happened. I sent the pics and information. The chat said the ring had a known defect and I would be sent a replacement. 2 weeks go by, and I chat again for shipping updates. And that original chat is somehow lost. Now they made me jump through a lot of hoops and they are sending me a refurbished ring, possibly a Gen 3 or older, only after I asked for my membership to be refunded. The sleep tracking is great, but I'd walk away from Oura 4. The sticker price and the membership are expensive for the very likely outcome that you'll downgrade to a Gen 3 because the Gen 4 has a known manufacturer defect.

I've got the Oura Ring 4, the Samsung Galaxy Ultra 23 watch, and the MUSE 2. So far the MUSE 2 is the best for monitoring sleep stages, brain health, HRV and heart to brain coherence. The MUSE offers a ton of excellent guided visualizations plus audio tracks like heartbeat, gentle stream, etc. The O-ring so far has been a massive disappointment re: sleep data and the step counting is so bad I don't even look at it. Surprisingly the Galaxy Ultra 23 is more precise for both those activities than the Oura Ring.

I have decided I’m not a fan. It does indeed do what it says - I don’t have anything bad to say about the ring itself. I have just found that I need more direct feedback, like just looking at my watch to see my heart rate or step count, vs having to go into the app and navigate to that info. So anyway, if you decide you want a slightly used version 4 silver in size 11, let me know. :)

I’ve been testing them on workouts (indoor treadmill, biking, leg day) to see if there was a delta and it’s routinely massive. Oura captures about half as much active calories etc. Is the Oura ring notoriously this bad? Makes me question its utility at all for capturing my heart rate. In addition deeply annoying that when you do register a workout with Apple Watch it doesn’t transfer the heart rate, zones, etc. into the Oura Ring even with the Apple Health integration.

I had such high expectations for this product and would love to be saying good things about it! This post helped me decide to buy the Gen4 ring, but unfortunately it stopped functioning (connecting to my phone) within 10 days of use. Oura confirmed the ring had a hardware issue and sent me a new one. The replacement ring stopped functioning within 3 days of receipt. Because the return window (30 days) is about to end, and I don't want to chance the next replacement breaking on me, I feel like I have no choice but to return it for a refund. Again, I am very sad because I think it's a great concept, but it just hasn't worked out for me in practice. Would love to be one of the positive reviewers!

I have had the Oura 4 ring for a month now and love it so far. Several reviews suggests the ring scratches easily. I have not seen that so far and have used at the gym and in the pool. Feedback has been great and motivates me to do better. Love that it tracks my sleep and has made some sensible recommendations to improve my sleep. When I fall short on a day, it does not scold me but gives encouragement to do better the next day. My one disappointment is battery life. Oura suggests battery life of up to 8 days. I find my battery is down 20% at the end of a day of use, so I can’t see how it will last more than 4-5 days (Which really is not a problem for me personally, also could be because I found size 14 to be right for me and Oura does say battery life is in part related to ring size). I have several watches I like to wear, so this ring really fills a need for me.

I’ve had mine for about 5 months (oura ring 4) and I’ve been happy with it. I’m surprised to see so many negative reviews actually. I read from the start that it wasn’t as accurate as Apple Watch for workouts/steps, but I also wanted the sleep tracking, cycle tracking, etc. I CANNOT sleep with a watch on, that was my main reason for wanting a ring instead. If the oura ring doesn’t pick up on my whole weight session or walk, I just manually add it in. I use that and MFP for calories in, calories out. It was definitely an expensive purchase for me, (a little over $500 for the ring and 1 year subscription) but I check it all throughout the day and it helps me push harder every day to keep up on my activity and manage stress. Editing to add about battery life. I’ve had 0 issues with this. I usually put it on the charger everyday during my shower. If I don’t, the battery life lasts like 3 days for me. As long as you don’t keep running it down to a dead battery before charging, I don’t think this should be an issue.

The battery has gone to crap along with Bluetooth connectivity integrity. Nowhere near 5-8 days as advertised and things seem to not want to stay connected anymore. It could be a poor battery thing, too. However, they seem to have set up an automatic replacement system at the Oura site without question. It is almost like they know they are failing. By chance, has Oura made technical changes to the Oura ring 4 replacements they are sending out so this awful cycle does not continue?

I have both an Oura 4.0 and a Whoop 4.0. In short, the Oura is better for all-around health and insights - it's for normal people that want insights on their day-to-day life. The Whoop is superior for athletes that want focused information they can use to inform their day-to-day training. For example, I rely more on Whoop's insights than I do Oura's when I'm on the fence about going for a run on a given day. However, Oura has a much better and more accurate method of tracking CICO and is much more reliable for sleep and naps (according to the gurus on YT). So it boils down to use case, ultimately. I have a marathon coming up in June, after which I will be letting my Whoop membership lapse and sticking with Oura. I'm not a fan of reverse anchor pricing strategies, and I think it's really shitty for companies to do stuff like this (especially since part of the original draw was a model in which you pay a monthly fee, and you get the device included--now they're pivoting into forcing a renewed subscription to get the 5.0 or the MG, which is not the same thing).

I really think Oura is getting closer (close) with its activity tracking… today, it accurately tracked me for a 6+ mile bike ride, measuring that it was split into 2 parts (4 and 2 miles) with a walk in between. If Oura can win the activity tracking… I think this could be it (for me). I’ve been a garmin and whoop user before. Granted, I still have my O3 and haven’t upped to the O4, mainly due to the widespread glitches/quality control… which is a whole other issue and not an insignificant one. Oura Ring - if reading, FIX the O4 issues.

My sleep metrics seem more accurate with Oura aside from deep sleep which can be 14 minutes on Oura and an hour on Apple. My HRV has always been very low, even though I seem to be very fit and healthy. Oura’s average is 29 and Apple 20. Apple is far more efficient at determining lowest RHR at night.

It’s really the whole scoring system I pay attention to. Not just sleep. I use it to adjust habits. - I’ve reduced drinking to only a few times a month. - I have added magnesium before bed for deeper sleep - I move rest days around if I need to if readiness is low - I add in extra cardio if the activity goal suggest more movement It’s just a general baseline I use to gauge my habits day to day. I can’t say it’s better than anything else. It’s just a convenient form factor and easy to understand app. My biggest recommendation is to not over think it. It’s just a tool that creates a baseline. What matters is what you want to do with that information

I just got one a month ago and it is a game changer in getting me back on my fitness journey postpartum and has kept me motivated. I previously was a fitbit wearer and loved it, just hated the look but was obsessed with meeting my step count and tracking everything else. With the demise of fitbit now that Google is phasing it out I attempted an Apple Watch and just never could get into it. I lurked in the Oura subreddit for a while to get a feel for what people were saying and the interface and took the plunge last month. I love the layout of the app and all the way it presents my data to me. It’s very spot on and they offer iPhone widgets so my steps are right on my lock Screen so I have easy access to the data I want. Price is steep but I have zero regrets. One thing to note, from what I gather the people that love Apple Watch hate Oura rings. Considering I hated my Apple Watch and love my ring, it tracks.

I’ve only mine for about 6 weeks so I’m still waiting for the cycle tracking to take effect, which was a big reason for me personally, but I’m still getting heaps out of it aside from that. I was so pleasantly surprised at how good my sleep and heart health were. My stress less so, that was hard to see, it was a rude awakening to realise how much I ignore and dismiss all those cues in my body. So I’m meditating more and taking the need to make adjustments to my day to day life way more seriously. It’s also pretty hard to drink even a couple wines once you see how much it affects you. That’s grim. I find it funny someone commented about people wearing them for social status. The ring is ugly. My closest friend teases me about it. My partner hates it (when he asks “if I slept okay” he adds that he’s asking me and not the ring).

I genuinely don't understand why people think Oura is ONLY a sleep aid/tracker. It's not. The health data I get from Oura (daily stress, HRV/heart rate, body temp, sleep) is incredible and has even helped me adjust some of my lifestyle habits (including activity). You will still need a dedicated activity tracker like an Apple Watch or Garmin for workouts, but if you like data, you'll love Oura. Two big caveats: 1. As another comment mentioned, Oura has a sketchy data sharing agreement with the US gov. Especially for women, that might be more of a concern. 2. If you suffer from even a bit of anxiety or health anxiety, sometimes the ring can make you feel more obsessive. Occasionally, I won't recharge my ring for a bit when it dies if I find that looking at the data has been impacting my mental state negatively instead of positively.

I’ve had mine for a little over a month or so, I think it’s comfortable to wear and tracks okay. I haven’t had any issues with it not tracking correctly with sleep but I work out and don’t think it tracks calories burned or activity in that sense super well. I do intense Pilates session and it usually only says like 100-130 calories are burned when google estimates a Pilates work out should be something like 200-300. I don’t track my calories so it’s not a huge deal to me but for others it might be. I’ve also noticed that when I’m stressed or maybe my heart rate is a bit up (anxiety) instead of showing as stress it’ll show as an activity. I have the gold and it still looks really nice but I do wear a silicone cover for work outs and when I’m at work, I work in a restaurant and worry about chipping with beer bottles and such. I find it really comfortable though and I hate watches so this is a better alternative but I do think it needs a little work. Also Amex sometimes does money back on oura rings so if you have one definitely check it before purchasing. Edit- I think over time it’ll track all my things better but I think it’s good to know these things. I’ve also seen on here that if you work night shifts and stuff it’ll not track it an activity.

I've been using my Oura Ring for about two months now and wanted to share my thoughts so far for anyone researching or those of you with advice for my problems! For context, I'm 26 y/o male who lives a pretty active lifestyle. My primary exercise is road cycling, with some strength training mixed in. My main motivation in getting the Oura was for sleep tracking, but I also wanted a fitness tracker that allowed me to still wear a regular watch. I've tried out Garmin, Whoop, and Apple Watches in the past. Here's my honest review: The Good: \- The sleep tracking is awesome. I had some concerns that I had sleep apnea due to a family history, and this allowed me to see metrics that put my mind at ease. I love checking out the sleep data each morning! \- Battery life is excellent. I'm charging every 4-6 days. \- User experience on the app is pretty good. Way better than Garmin, but not as good as Whoop - (the Whoop band always looked ridiculous to me) \- The resilience metrics are really cool. I haven't gotten sick since I got the ring, but my wife's is pretty accurate for recognizing when she's getting sick. The Bad: \- The ring scratches pretty easily. I even bought silicone covers to wear when weight lifting, but my silver ring looks very scratched after just two months. I'm just embracing it haha! \- I don't understand how the tags are supposed to be insightful. I've tried to be diligent with entering activities and when I drink coffee but am yet to learn anything from it all. They just launched this AI chatbot thing which doesn't seem to be very helpful. I would be interested to hear other people's thoughts on this. \- I don't think that it tracks stress accurately. I recently went through a week of having panic attacks off an on, but my ring would rarely label those times as stress. The Ugly: \- Okay here we go... I would discourage anyone who is a cyclist from getting an Oura Ring. I am yet to find any reliable way to accurately capture my bike rides in my Oura Ring data. I have it linked to Strava, but it cannot import any heart rate data for the ride. Also, the heart rate dashboard won't even give me an activity label for my Strava ride even when it's been imported. The majority of times I ride, the ring isn't even able to capture my heart rate, it just says "no data" for the time I rode. I messaged support about this, and all they could recommend is that I wear gloves so that the ring doesn't move around as much. No luck. \- The step counting is completely all over the place. When I first got the ring, it seemed to give me a step "equivalent" for my bike rides. Lately, it gives me virtually no steps for my ride. Obviously, when you are riding a bike you aren't taking steps, but they have to be able to think of some way to make an equivalent. \- Overall, I just don't really trust the activity data. I think that the Oura Ring is best labeled as a "wellness tracker" and shouldn't be considered by people that are more interested in tracking activities. If that's you, consider the Whoop or Garmin. Conclusion: I like my Oura Ring for the insights it gives me regarding sleep. However, If I had known that it would be so unreliable in tracking my cycling I probably would have gone back to Garmin. Would love to hear about other people's experience!

I absolutely love mine. If it broke today I’d buy another one and have it en route before I went to sleep tonight. I will say it’s not for everyone, definitely read through some complaints some people have on this sub. For example, everyone will tell you to get the silver because it hides scratches the best, and then you’ll see many complaints from people who did not get the silver and regret it haha ETA-my HSA paid for it so that was great

Very good when it works. Very frustrating when it doesn't. I wanted to wear mechanical watches that's why I opted for a ring tracker. Worked very well the first few weeks. It tracked everything and gave me very good insights about my health but I am now experiencing connection issues. I tried all their troubleshooting steps and still nothing. My ring has not connected to the app for 3 days now and support has been a nightmare as well. No response. Take that as you will, your milage may vary.

Me too! I have nice watches, and I hate the look of fitness trackers/Apple watches outside the gym. I've really enjoyed the ring. I wear it when I weight lift. It fits under the padded circle for that finger on my weightlifting gloves. I pretty much only take it off in the shower - I do wear it in the pool. After 7 months, there are no scratches/dents. Still looks great.

It depends. If you were only using your watch as a very basic fitness device, I could see the simplicity of the Oura being an attractive alternative. If you value a variety of workout tracking and metrics, I don't think the Oura is a suitable replacement. It's a better device to be used in conjunction with an Apple watch, rather than instead of one. And that doesn't even touch upon the watch's other functionality - an extension of your iPhone, which, of course, the Oura can't do at all. I wear both and think they work very well together. The redundancies are minimal, and the integration between the two is excellent.

My leg day HR today. Matches almost exactly to my oura ring. This metric never excited me either way as it's always pretty consistent as long as I am wearing it properly. Similar readings from all my Galaxy watches going back 5 years. I would need to wear a medical HR monitor to really know if there was any difference.

I never had an apple watch but I have a garmin watch. I switched to mechanicals and use the garmin for running. I do wear an Oura ring all the time, though, so I still have data available to me - just in a non-intrusive, not so ever-present way. I like to maintain an intentional separation between my digital life and my physical, immediate presence. I don’t want people getting used to me responding to everything immediately, and I don’t want to be overloaded with notifications all the time either.

I am also an owner of an apple watch and an Oura ring. Also a daily exerciser and very fit. I have had the oura ring for a little over 8 months. My issue with my watch was that I have to charge daily ( have recently gone on a camino in Spain and very annoying to have to carry a charger.) Looking at the Garmin. As far as the Oura, I found that it did help to measure my sleep, but a lot of other nonsense that clearly is not helpful. I also question its accuracy- once I was in a car doing an all night drive but the ring told me that I " slept great" (!!!) Most of the time when I sleep lousy, or not enough... I know it and do not need an app to tell me that. My latest issue is that the RING now requires an every other day charge. Annoying, particularly because they tout that the battery life can be up to a week without a charge. Clearly this is not true. I also am loathe to any " subscription " model. I will not re -up my yearly subscription when its due. Interestingly, I am a clinician and my patients all the time ask me what I think about my ring. The answer is a " meh." To me, not worth the money. Live and learn.

I have one! From my perspective there are 2 things oura does well: tracking sleep and tracking menstrual cycle. It's fascinating to see how the body temperature changes in each phase of a cycle. I heard that thanks to a built in thermometer it can detect pregnancy in very early stages. Has Oura helped me with anything? Probably not much. Will I get a new one when the battery dies? I don't think so. I also don't like their pricing model. You need to pay for a device + pay monthly subscription after 3 months.

Tracks many different biometrics, sleep, tracks my period, my heart rate, etc. I wear a silicone cover over mine to not scratch it up while I spar, but it’s comfortable, doesn’t give me any trouble when I wear my mitts, not bulky etc. I like it better than the Apple Watch just because in my personal opinion it’s a lot more comfortable. The oura app is really cool, super insightful as well :) good luck!

I prefer my Fitbit over my Oura Ring, though I wear both most days and sleep them usually. My watch is far more useful on a daily basis, and has more integrated tracking for things like food, water, cals etc. And the fitbit app/basic things are free. Oura ring has an annual subscription and very limited integrations on apps for tracking anything outside steps, sleep, and period info which makes it somewhat frustrating for me to use, personally They're useful for different things and different reasons. I think smart watches are still the better buy right now, but I'd do some detailed comparisons between rings and watches for what you want to use them for then decide if it's worth it.

I’ll piggy-back on this excellent review, since I generally agree with it. Sleep: I have both the ring and pay for Sleepcycle on the watch and find the ring to be more accurate than the watch but also on the conservative side — I don’t feel like I’m getting credit for sleeping when I should but it’s hard to know since human memory is not accurate either. Data: You can download your data if you want and there’s a lot of it. Advice/coaching: turning data into things you can do differently is probably a lot of their R&D and it is annoying because it can’t be turned off, nor can you streamline what data you’re shown to reduce obsessive thinking but the language choices are surprisingly not off putting Vs Apple Watch: Agreed on it being okay for exercise but short of the watch, which seems more accurate and easier to use. If you just want a vague sense of your activity level it’s good. Ring best for sleep, watch best for exercise

Don't buy! Lots of problems. First ring broke in 2 pc after 2 weeks (outside shel fell off), without any reason to break. A lot of work to send it back and receive a new one, a lot of research to connect the new ring. Now after a few weeks: no connection anymore with the app, whatever I tried (only sometimes when placing it on the charger), battery empty after a few days, a lot of gaps in the data while it fits tight enough. So you pay a lot for a not working ring and not only the ring, but also monthly.. Send an e-mail to Oura to return it, but still no reply. I'll buy another device.

I have both Whoop and Oura. The Whoop app is better I think - slicker and cleaner - but the actual metrics from both track very closely. Besides the form factor as personal preference the data from both is pretty much the same. And I always use a Polar h10 for heart rate during exercise anyway. I don’t intend to renew my Whoop sub. Right now I sync all my data from Oura to intervals.icu and also Apple Health with a few shortcuts I found on the internet for hrv/spo2/rhr/temp and just track everything on there now. I have found that I don’t really need AI telling me how I should be feeling. If my training load and form show I’m not going crazy and I feel ok, I’ll do a workout. If my hrv is tanking and I feel tired, then I rest. Just my humble opinion and experience. But thought I’d share.

As for Garmin, I can’t really recommend you a model tbh bc I’m really only experienced with the Fenix. What I would say is that depending on how long you plan to wait to go back to MTB/weights, it may be worth it to get the Fenix now and you’ll have something good for that later. I do know there are some great deals on the Fenix 7’s/Epix 2’s as they’re now last gen. But they’re still extremely relevant and can be had at great prices for the features they contain. I have both (sense 2 for Fitbit) and honestly the stats are similar with a premium subscription. Sure Fitbit messes up sleep at times, but readiness values tend to be similar. I would say the symptom radar is more sensitive on the oura, but the key metrics I like (HRV, resting hr) are similar-ish.

Fitbit considers 68 as high! :) On a serious note, Oura seems to have higher recovery number for the score vs Fitbit, but HRV and sleep are around the same. This Wednesday Fitbit has me at a 66, oura at 73. HRV and everything was similar so it’s just how Fitbit decided to grade it based on their calculation. Don’t get me wrong, if you want an oura, go for it. I enjoy mine. Just saying that based on raw numbers (HRV, HR metrics, skin temp, breathe rate) they actually track similarly.

Well i can state my story here for what it is worth and your consideration. First I always found smart watches strange because WTF would I want a second device to tell me what my phone already does? My phone is on my person 100% of the time. I saw no value in that and in fact something that would just give me MORE notifications. Don't we already get enough? However I DID see the value in a fitness tracker. I have owned an Oura ring, fitbit, and a whoop, because that made a whole lot more sense to me (Still does). Anyway, I got a free $300 OnePlus Watch 2 as a promo when i bought my new phone, so I got a smartwatch anyway. Basically a Android version of the Apple watch. Sure enough within weeks i took it off - as it was exactly what i expected, a near useless extension of my phone. ....buuuuuut it did teach me the value of a watch as a fitness tracker. SO rather than have a medicore fitness tracker, I got the top of the line garmin (970). And when i bought my garmin i immediately turned off ALL notifications so it remains a strictly fitness watch which BTW I find extremely motivating. I can honestly say this purchase improved my life and health. Anyway - there is zero question here. An Apple watch is a better *Smartwatch* (dismal battery aside). And Apple Health app is very cool actually. But Garmin is a better fitness tracker - the software there is incredible.

First to correct the op whoop strap is not the sleep tracker to beat it's the oura ring. In fact the whoop strap is an absolute ripoff especially when you tie in the subscription costs - only fools would get one of those now. The Oura ring being the most accurate consumer product is an objective fact because of the fact it's measuring on your finger versus your wrist. The Apple watch is actually more accurate in sleep tracking than Garmin. Garmin is sort of middle of the road unfortunately even with the new sensor. The quantified scientist as well as a few others on YouTube measure this stuff. But yeah if you really want to geek out on this stuff subscribe to that guy.

Great topic and comments! Based on my experience, I agree with most comments that AW is probably better to manage workouts, and the Oura ring for tracking sleep and stress. All Apple does is collect and display data but there's no analytics and insights behind it unfortunately.

I’m loving it. It gives you understandable insights, analyzing your data., tips etc. other wearables provides similar info but not in the same user friendly way. Eg I have an Apple Watch that use to track my workouts but in terms of sleeping only tells the time you slept and the phases. Oura tells you if your sleep was repairing, if you had movement during your sleep, advise on the best time for you to go to sleep

My Oura used to say I was consistently stressed, everyday, for at least 5 hours. Now, this past week, it’s read that I was “engaged” when I experienced one of the most stressful weeks of my career. It doesn’t record gym activity all that well either. I think sleep recording is pretty good. It’s a nice gift.

Yea, I do agree. We all have different needs, and I’ve now tried voth combos (AW ultra & Oura and Garmin & Oura). While the AW ultra was a solid sport watch as well, I kind of wanted to get rid of the smart watch thingy, hence, made the switch to Garmin. This is spot on - I went from Apple Watch to Oura and honestly missed having actual workout tracking for my gym sessions. The ring is amazing for sleep data (way more comfortable than wearing a chunky watch to bed) but it basically just knows you moved around, not that you did 3 sets of deadlifts. Ended up getting a cheap Garmin for workouts and keeping the Oura for everything else

It doesn’t really matter how accurate the data capture is if the analysis is useless. For instance Apple Watch knows I woke up 3 times last night and rolled around restlessly but I still have a sleep score of like 95. Oura Ring actually noticed something was wrong and suggested exercise since I haven’t done that in awhile

I’ve only had an Apple Watch and I’ve had it much longer than I’ve been a runner. I’m a woman that lives in a very safe area but - still a woman so safety is important to factor in. Being able to run with my Watch only connected to cellular service is soooo freeing. I have music and podcasts available to keep me entertained and getting audio cues from Runna for my running plan is just perfection. I haven’t found a reason to justify switching away from the ecosystem when this works beautifully for me. However: I do not love the sleep tracking on Apple. It is not an ideal setup. I added an Oura ring in December and use it as my rest/recovery index where Apple tells me all about fitness. That’s been working perfectly for me.

Watch is catching up on sleep monitoring...but only if you wear it to sleep. The battery issue on the ring that spans multiple generations...subscription model...etc...is enough to not recommend it to friends or family. Stick with the watch! Apple sleep functions will only improve better. The overall nightly scores are very similar comparing the two.

You won’t be able to sync any other device to the equipment in class and it won’t show in the app, but you can check your device’s reporting after to have a read out. However, I would check OTF Facebook groups or this page for someone selling a band if you don’t want to pay full price. The HR monitoring during class can be insightful and motivating, and the benchmark tracking and on-app class recaps are great to be able to watch yourself make progress towards new goals. It’s very worth it to me. I use an oura ring separately for wellness tracking and get my OTF stats linked to it from my Apple health from each class.

I’m 45 and in the best shape of my life because I can see the impact of all my previous bad habits that I had no idea were so bad (eating a lot before bed, drinking, over training, etc.) The metrics and dashboards give me such positive reinforcement for the good things I do that it makes lifestyle changes not only manageable, but exciting. I had the Oura ring for awhile and thought it was a good sleep tracker but a bad activity and fitness tracker: it’s unsafe to use a ring while weight lifting so I had to use an Apple Watch anyways, so it felt like my data wasn’t all in one place which is annoying. For what it’s worth, I came back to Whoop but the last time I was on it, it was 3.0. I used the Oura but it’s not a great fitness tracker. I used an Apple Watch but I didn’t like wearing it 24/7, and I didn’t think any of the add on apps like Athlytic were great. I find the whoop works best for me bc it’s screen less so I can easily wear all day and night, and I do find the data it provides useful. Since I last used Whoop, they added Health Span and Strength Trainer. I like the gamification of Health Span and I like the calculation of strength training strain if you log your exercises. If this all ready was there when you last tried and you didn’t enjoy it, it may not be worth you coming back.

It fit properly but I didn’t feel the feedback was useful for me, more often than not, days where I had a great recovery score - I felt like garbage and was exhausted. My sleep score was usually off, it tracked me as sleeping even when I was laying in bed reading for hours thanks to my insomnia. I get the stress readings are based on multiple factors but it would register me as relaxed even when I was in super stressful situations at work, then would say I was stressed when cuddling on the couch with my dogs. I just didn’t feel like the info was helpful to me, maybe it was correct and I was interpreting things wrong but either way, the price point didn’t equal the value to me.

I’ve had an Oura ring for the last 8 months after using Apple Watches for years. It’s been an absolute game changer for my overall health vs just fitness tracking. It’s comfortable to sleep in and the battery lasts for approx 5 days, so it’s convenient and the data is really useful especially around sleep and ‘readiness’. I prefer rather than having a set of static goals, it adjusts them based on how my stats are. So if I’ve had a rubbish nights sleep or been travelling a lot and jet lagged, my exercise goal reduces while I recover and get back to baseline, if my stats are good and I’m sleeping and recovering well then it automatically Increases goals. It’s also got a tagging function so you can see how certain things affect your sleep, HRV, body temp etc. it’s helped me cut down caffeine, put extra attention to my sleep, reduce alcohol etc just because I can see what actually happens to my body when I do things ‘right’.

I've only had it for about 3 weeks, but I've enjoyed using it so far! I've found the sleep data to be pretty accurate. Sometimes I get enough sleep but I feel really crappy and groggy for hours in the morning, and I've realised that it happens on days where I wake up from deep sleep or REM. I'm not sure there's much I can do to control that, but I also realised that my resting heart rate always lowers late which is probably because I eat late, so I'm going to try and eat earlier and see if that helps. The readiness scores are also interesting to me. There have been days where, like I said earlier, I've woken up feeling exhausted, looked at my glowing readiness score and thought "I don't think so!", but then later I've felt more energised and managed to have a great gym session. Lastly, I go to the gym regularly and I usually push it hard every session. The recovery adviser almost feels like it's giving me permission to tone it down on some days, it's okay to do an easier session or skip the gym and do a bit of walking instead. Recovery is important! I don't find the tag feature helpful. I think it'd be much more helpful for me if there was a notes/memo feature when it does the stress adviser summary at the end of the day so I can write anything pertinent for that day. It'd also be a good way to reflect.

To be honest, this is more of a comment about bio tracking and expectations. Data is great but it really is what you do with it. You need to perform the changes. -1) the data is not perfect. It is very good but not perfect. To be honest, nothing is perfect. 2) why do you want it? Most people i know who has the whoop, oura or apple watches dont even look at the data. Or— they do after a workout. 3) oura is more of a recovery/sleep tracker than it is on working out. I have a heart rate monitor that syncs with apple health which syncs to my oura app. You wouldnt want to workout with oura ring unless you’re running or cycling. Injury with something on your finger is real especially lifting weights That being said- i look at my data and have made better life choices because of it. I add tags everyday to see if there are any patterns This data + general feeling of self allowed me to realize alcohol’s impact on my recovery. Ive decreased drinking dramatically. I also have been optimizing my sleep and oura has been great to have as a north star. Is what im doing really impacting XYZ. Most people dont. Most people use it for social status.

But I also wear a Google watch on my right wrist (mainly to be contactable) and a constellation on my left (because it's pretty). I have no shame in that - each device has its own purpose, nobody cares that I'm wearing two watches - there's bigger shit to worry about imo.

My oura ring is linked to a natural cycles app and it tracks my cycle by taking my temperature every morning. Basically it lets me know when my body is going to ovulate / what phase of my cycle I’m in to either help someone get or prevent getting pregnant! I was a long time hormonal bc / iud girly and I’ve been using this system for probably 4 years now. It’s amazing highly recommend ! If you don’t want to get an oura ring to track this you can also buy a thermometer or a less $$ ring

I've had mine for 5 years. Got it in the UK and that comes with a 5 year warranty. In that time, I've gotten 3 free rings and a free lifetime membership, all because of dying batteries. Customer service is good and happy to replace it with no questions asked (they can see from the app that the battery is draining too quickly). It is not like Lord of the rings, that when you put it on, it fixes all your sleep problems (or makes you invisible). It does drill in how severely alcohol affects your sleep. But I'm lounging around all day in my pajamas, watching TV, and it tells me that I have had 5 hours of high stress... Which I clearly haven't. Sometimes I think I slept great, check my ring, see I got a bad sleep score, then realize "actually, I don't feel that good" and it ruins my day. It is useful for temperature and heart rate.. you have an objective measure of how you are doing.. if you are getting sick, if you are recovered. And that's all I have to say about that.

I ditched the AW and got an Oura ring; best of both worlds. I got annoyed with having to charge my AW every few days and was surprised to find that, at the end of the day, I like a nice mechanical watch more. I work in big tech, have all the latest and greatest stuff, but for some reason I decided that smart watches were less enjoyable after owning them for around a decade.

I’ve dropped a lot of cash on wearable devices, trying to figure out which ones work best for tracking my health and fitness. Here’s my take on each, cleaned up for clarity: 1. Oura Ring: I like this one a lot. It’s awesome for displaying sleep data in a clear way, and I don’t mind the monthly subscription. That said, it’s mostly focused on sleep tracking. It can get uncomfortable when I’m lifting weights or wearing motorcycle gloves. Their customer service is great, though—they replaced my ring even after the warranty was long gone. My only worry is how they handle user data; I’m not sure I trust their database practices. 2. RingConn: This was a total bust. The UI and UX are awful, and my device had a sensor error. I emailed their support for weeks with no response. Only after I posted about it on X did they reach out and send a replacement. Honestly, it’s not worth the money or the headache. 3. Apple Watch Ultra 2: This is great for tracking activities like running and general fitness. The data has gotten much better, but if you want in-depth info on sleep, stress, or what Whoop offers, you’re stuck paying for multiple subscriptions. I use it for sleep, running, and pretty much any activity, and it does the job well. I decided to pair it with the Whoop since they complement each other perfectly, and I still get to show off my cool watches. 4. Whoop 5.0: This is my top pick. The data is incredibly detailed, and the new bicep strap is so comfortable I forget it’s on. It doesn’t auto-detect activities, but I sync everything from Apple Health, so I don’t need to manually start or stop tracking. Pairing it with the Apple Watch works like a charm, giving me the best of both worlds while letting me wear my favorite watches. After spending all this time and money, I’d say the Whoop 5.0, paired with the Apple Watch, is totally worth it for me. It’s the most complete and seamless setup I’ve found.

Oura and Whoop do not write to Apple Health? I have an Oura ring and I thought it was able to add data to apple Health. I never looked into it because I usually sleep with my watch. I have sleep data for the nights that I did not wear my watch but wore my ring. I use AutoSleep and HeartWatch to view sleep data. Both of these apps require Apple Watch. I don’t look at HRV. I have a pacemaker so my HRV is not accurate.

Politics aside, bc honestly I don’t really care. I’ve had my Oura ring for just over a year. I absolutely love it. It’s helped my sleep tremendously and the TDEE is very accurate (for me anyways). My TDEE plus counting macros has made my recomp a breeze because I’m not guessing. I use fingerless gloves when lifting to avoid scratching my ring and calluses. I don’t use my Apple Watch anymore and that alone has been amazing for my mental health. No more messages, emails, and phone calls strapped to my wrist.

Oura is fantastic with sleep tracking. If you feel like that’s something you need to work on, and your Garmin is not great with it (mine is atrocious with sleep tracking), then it could easily be worth it. Oura is awful as an activity tracker. Don’t use or rely on it for anything related to movement/workouts. It’s also not safe to wear a ring (of any kind) when doing certain kinds of workouts (weight lifting, anything with hands or where there’s a possibility for a finger mishap. Don’t google de-gloving unless you think this is not true). The overall functional piece that I find the most helpful is the “readiness” score. Which should roughly correspond to Garmin’s Training Readiness (which is a useless metric if your watch doesn’t track sleep well - or at all). HRV is a well studied indicator of the status of your nervous system-which indicates your level of “recovery”. If your body is still stressed from yesterday’s workout, you may not feel that. But your body does. So something that let’s me know what’s going on in my body is extremely helpful to keep me from overdoing things, or let’s me know to swap workouts around if I’m scheduled for a hard workout and my body is more ready for a nap. There is a subscription fee-which isn’t huge, but isn’t 0. So that’s something to consider. I’ve had an Oura for years. It’s been great for me. But I don’t use it for anything other than sleep or “readiness”.

I have a Garmin 970, wear an Oura Ring at night and I have had a Whoop for about a month. It has actually made me lose faith that any of these are very accurate. When it comes to RHR, the Garmin and Oura ring are usually pretty close, the Garmin is always higher by one or two. The Whoop is much higher, usually about 6 or 7. I'm guessing it has something to do with the how often they measure and the algorithm they use. As for HRV, the Oura Ring and Whoop are pretty close, with the Whoop consistently being about 2-3 higher. The Garmin is always at least 15-20 higher. The recovery scores and sleep scores are all over the place and rarely agree with each other.

I got one a few months ago and I don’t love it. It always says there’s signs of something straining my body (when I feel perfectly fine), loads and loads of missing data every day even after getting a replacement. It always says I’m well rested on days I feel the most sleepy and vice versa. The activity tracking is sooo off. Says I burned 2,000 calories when I’ll be mostly sedentary. I know Apple Watch isn’t all that precise for some but my daily avg is around 1,600/day and I feel like that’s pretty accurate for my activity level. The sleep tracking is fine. It doesn’t make a difference in how I go about my day. I used to wear the watch to bed to track my sleep but think it’s uncomfortable now. I use the tags for migraines and work and it just says I get less sleep on those days and that it’s common. Do I still wear it? Yes, I paid $400 for it. Will I buy another one when this dies? No.

I’ve had mine for 2 months now. Which reminds me I should put it on now. It’s a lot bulkier than I thought it would be. The sleep information is nice. I bought it because I would sometimes wake up with headaches/migraines. I thought maybe my sleep apnea came back or something. Looks like there is no correlation. So now I can narrow it down to consecutive nights of poor sleep or wrong pillow. It’s good at its job. But once you have the info you need I feel like you don’t need to wear it so much anymore.

100% agree here. Apple Watches and Oura have been tested and rank higher in terms accuracy in predicting your sleep and stages. The Apple Watch SE is much cheaper and probably a better option! Garmins don’t track sleep stages quite as accurately, but if you’re not going to be using it for the fitness features it’s probably not worth the money. My Garmin honestly doesn’t really get the times I fall asleep very accurately and it’s usually skewed by quite a bit. If you do want a Garmin go for the Vivoactive, Venu or very base model forerunner 55! I can highly recommend Garmin specifically for the amazing battery life.

Female health in whoop as a runner? Misfit has worked well for me for years. There's many ways to wear it, too, as a necklace, as a watch, and at one point, I got an ankle band and put it in there to be really out of the way when I was working at Walmart in the deli and still wanted to track my steps but was afraid of losing it if I attached it to my shoe with the included clip. ETA: Misfit also has a speedo version that tracks swimming laps, which is helpful for a lifeguard! Right now, though, I'm using the Oura ring, and I like that as well, but if you want the readiness scores and insights, you need the subscription (about $6 per month), but you can also use it as a basic fitness tracker without the subscription, I've heard. I've never had it without the subscription to know personally what ask that entails, though, and it's quite pricy to have things withheld. These are some common complaints along the users. If you're considering it, there's a subreddit dedicated to it with screenshots of the app, discussions of results, and common complaints being discussed with cost versus benefits.

Oura is better at sleep, recovery, nudging you towards change. If you're susceptible to being graded and interested in recovery and sleep metrics, Oura is for you. For activity tracking, I'd skip it.

I'm plus minus on it. I've had my ring for a couple of years and it still does not perform as advertised. For example, I have to consistently tag my strength training because Oura has not learned that I'm a weightlifter after 2 years. It sometimes doesn't recognize walking. I recently started HRT which affected my body temperature, this is 4 months ago, mind you, but Oura consistently tells me that I should take it easy and go into rest mode because my body temp is up. It hasn't learned the new normal, although Oura help says that it will or that it should. I'm not holding my breath. Aside from that, it does give good sleep insights I believe, but it's a pretty expensive sleep tracker.

I don't know why this person has all three, but my credit card had a $200 benefit for Oura. I decided to try it just because of the discount, and have come to the conclusion it isn't necessary with the Whoop. I also have a Galaxy Ring, which doesn't require a subscription and seems just as good as the Oura to me. Curiosity leads me to try all of this stuff but so far the Whoop has been the most impressive device.

The other annoying thing is that your heart rate data isn’t included when the workout posts to Strava. At least, I can’t figure it out. I’ve read posts on here that says they’re working on it, but I’m not sure I believe it. It would’ve been done by now. I love my ring for sleep, recovery trends, and other health monitoring but it’s not a good fitness tracker.

I’ve had mine for a few months and I actually would say no, here’s why: 1. Its real strength is sleep and heart rate tracking. At that price it’s not worth it as other trackers can do more for the same price. 2. It’s a terrible fitness tracker. It’s often doesn’t even accurately record my heart rate zones. And it’s doesn’t display detailed or specific information for workouts that I’d want. 3. Form factor makes not useable for certain activities to e rn track. Think rock climbing, lifting. 4. The UX UI is needlessly dense. And not well designed to get you the information you need quickly If this were cheaper I’d say get it. But at this price it’s compromised

I could not sleep with my watch on EVER but the ring is so easy to sleep with. The size I got is snug on 1 finger and loose but secure on another so if my fingers swell I can move it to the other finger. Oh! The bands for the watches that I had were all the stretchy ones. Which get gross but they are washable. But when I wash my hands and get water on the watch on occasion? Awful. Ring though? I don’t even think about it. It’s far less annoying to me.

Oura and Apple told me that I had a great sleep 10 nights in a row, which was really not the case. I’d say yes, but also: it depends. If you’re happy to have and wear a smartwatch over analogue and have the means to buy it, then yes. I think it will give you good data to start with. If you’re not the smartwatch type and can’t be bothered with all the other features of an Apple Watch, then maybe check out the Oura ring. I have both, love both but for different reasons. My watch is basically my phone on my wrist and I love it for its fitness tracking functionality among other things. My Oura ring is my ultimate health companion and in my opinion one of the best on the market to track sleep and overall health. So I guess it depends on what feels comfortable for you and what are your main use cases.

If you take working out seriously I would say you need both. Oura isn’t the best for actually tracking the specific exercise you are doing.. If you care more about general wellness and metrics like heart rate, temperature, etc. I think the Oura js better in pretty much every way. I have the Oura primarily to track sleep and my cycle as a woman. I couldn’t imagine wearing my bulky watch to sleep or my ring to lift weights. The battery life also lasts like 3-4 times as long with the Oura. So totally depends on what you’re tracking but to me they work together!

It sometimes (sometimes) says "maybe swimming" in the app after it detected certain movement - and that's usually post-swim shower and not the actual swimming. Basically, it is completely useless for tracking swimming. You can enter the time of start and finish off your swim into the app, but that is not even particularly useful. It is not a workout detector and neither does it pretend to be. It just about tracks steps but not exactly accurately either. If you are thinking of replacing an Apple Watch with Oura ring for workout tracking, don't. If you want better battery life, Garmin (up to around 11 days) or Apple Watch Ultra (up to about 2 days).

I have had an Oura ring for a few months now. I originally got it because the cycles tracking is supposed to be super accurate and I was trying to conceive, but turned out I had already conceived by the time I purchased it! I like it for the sleep tracking primarily, and now for my base vitals tracking during pregnancy as well. The sleep tracking is super accurate in my experience and very helpful, and so far it has been very accurate in terms of telling me when I’m getting sick, etc. ahead of when I actually experience the full symptoms. I don’t think the calorie tracking is very accurate, but I don’t use it for that. I also really like the stress tracking. My career is quite high stress and I like being able to see the trends, know when I need to take some time and chill, etc. Learned from this thread about the Peter Thiel connection and don’t love that, though.

This is my perspective as someone who uses Whoop and wears an SMP or a Speedy that I rotate according to how I feel. Also, I've tried Oura, and liked it, but it wasn't for me. And I have an AW Ultra that I use when running and hiking, and this is after a few years of using a Garmin Fenix. Most people think of Whoop as simply a fitness tracker, which it is, but it is much more. What seperates Whoop from other things is how it shows you the impact of your behaviors. Yes, I think Whoop was less than honest about their upgrade policy with the new 5.0 and MG release, but I still can't find anything like it. The "magic" of Whoop is that it allows you to pre-select certain behaviors that will appear in a daily journal. Each morning you take 30 seconds to check yes or no on these items, e.g. Did you consume added sugar yesterday? Did you eat a late meal? There are endless options. As times goes on, Whoop continues to show you how these behaviors are impacting your sleep so that you discover how far before bed you should stop eating, or what's the latest time of the day you can drink caffeine without it impacting your sleep (even though you may think it doesn't because you fall asleep quickly). I'm not trying to sound like an advertisement for Whoop, but I think most people evaluate Whoop without knowing what it really does. So when I run or hike I use my Ultra for reasons that don't overlap with Whoop. But the rest of the day, when wearing my SMP or Speedy, or when I sleep, I wear Whoop because it is providing overall health insights that I find valuable and have led to lifestyle changes that I may not have made otherwise--even as a person in great shape who works out six days a week.

Other factors can be based on actionable items as well. I sleep better when I don't drink caffeine or alcohol too late at night. Oura takes that into account by measuring things like latency (time it takes to fall asleep), HRV, etc. So I am able to learn and improve my behaviors to get better sleep. IMO that's a lot more useful.

I had this when I had more than one source feeding into my sleep stats. I don’t think the Apple Watch records time in bed, but some apps and maybe Oura do. It all gets horribly garbled. Having even two active sources messes up the results, at least as far as duration and time awake are concerned, even though one of them is supposed to take priority. I found that once I ditched the Oura, AutoSleep, Sleep Cycle, Pillow etc (or at least stopped them writing to Apple’s sleep stats, as opposed to just reading them), Apple’s sleep stats seemed much closer to reality.

Over time the metrics have allowed me to perform better in my 40’s than I did in my 20’s. It’s not just the device, I find the algorithms and the app itself make a big difference. I tried the oura, it felt like a less accomplished version. I don’t want a watch. I know the AW has better hardware, but it doesn’t have the data analysis and I already wear watches. It’s also not 24/7 due to charging. So the app, lack of screen, 24/7 wearability due to charge on wrist. I have been a long-time Fitbit user who has grown increasingly annoyed with Google's management of the app. Earlier this year I bought an Oura, which I love—the app has a great positive vibe and the tracking is more sophisticated than a Firbit. I have a Pebble on order (shipping very soon?!?) and am hopeful about a Pebble + Oura combo as providing an always-on, long battery life, clock+more PLUS a strong sleep/biomarker/wellness tracker. If there eventually ends up being some kind of data integration that makes it easy to see key Oura stats on the Pebble, the long-term possibilities are exciting. They each have complementary strengths and an overlap in target markets, but are not directly competing.

Plus one for the Oura. I know the Whoop is a more comprehensive fitness tracker but it looks terrible. Oura delivers almost everything I’m looking for in a wearable. My current setup for running is Strava on the phone plus a Wahoo Tickr, and on the bike I have a Garmin 520. I’m considering supplementing my Oura with a Garmin Instinct for running so I don’t have to take my phone with me to get better stats.

I’ve had Fitbit for 10 years. It was great until Google bought the company. It has been going downhill since then and legacy users are now being forced to switch their account to Google. The support sucks. I also use an aura ring and I love it. I’m to the point of getting rid of my Fitbit. The main advantage that it had is that the Fitbit scale synced with the app, but then they stoped selling the scale. Eventually, they’ll probably try to move all Fitbit users to the Google watch system. I’d look elsewhere.

I use both — as others have pointed out, the Oura is the far superior sleep tracker, but the watch is the far superior activity tracker. They compliment each other well, but neither seems fully capable of replacing the other.

Long term owner (had the 3 and upgraded to 4) In my personal opinion it picks up the slack from the Apple Watch. Apple Watch is a great fitness tracker - Oura is a great health tracker. Oura is an awful fitness tracker , Apple is an awful health / sleep tracker (from what I’ve seen - plus I hate wearing it to bed as it’s huge) The Oura is a pop on your finger and open the app to sync your health - it’s great. Throughly recommend. It’s helped me identify my stress source and it helped me make the decision to change jobs as I saw what impact getting up at 4am was having on. It was staggering to see my metrics improve so quickly when I started sleeping properly! It depends what you want from it. Do you want to measure your health , heart rate, sleep? Yes. Do it. If you want to replace your Apple Watch with Oura and have it monitoring your fitness too, then no, stick with the AW. Oura is not cut out for fitness tracking. They work well together.

Have tried the Oura and Ultrahuman, but the RingConn was much better for me as it is invisible when worn. None of them are particularly accurate, however, and the tech is still in its infancy. The Fitbit Luxe is small on the other wrist, but is not perfect. Sadly an Apple Watch or Garmin are way better, but double writing is tricky.

Used to do Apple Watch and switched to Garmin, but not for daily tracking. I did it specifically because of the data it gives me for workouts, and the training plans. It’s a training watch. I think all the stuff you mentioned for me I don’t really need a lot of frills around, really. A simple line chart showing me VO2 max over time is fine. My Garmin Fenix shows me my current estimated VO2 max right on the face. I do like how Garmin charts HRV, but neither Apple or Garmin should be considered best for this if you really care. Wrist is just not an ideal location for it, even if Whoop had done well. I use Oura for sleep tracking. Apple and Garmin BOTH are kinda weak here. What Garmin does do well is show me trends of HRV, and from that it can be useful in terms of telling me recovery impact to training. Ultimately I view Garmin as a training device and Apple Watch as a lifestyle device. Both are about the same for daily tracking of activities and Garmin can feed Apple Health. If you like Apple nudging you to “close the rings” you’re maybe more of an Apple Watch candidate than Garmin. If you like Garmin telling you that today you should run intervals or ride a long zone 2 ride then you’re a Garmin candidate. I also hated having notifications and apps and stuff on my wrist. It was cool at first and then it was annoying and distracting. My big motivation away from Apple Watch was this. First I stopped wearing it at all. Since my goal is training data I was doing activity tracking from my phone and it was unwieldy. I looked at trackers like Fitbits and Whoops and stuff and settled on Garmin. Admittedly I kinda needed out on the data and the maps of the Fenix. I do some remote canoeing and hiking and thought the maps would be really useful. I think the only thing I really want from my watch is some ability to control audio from it. Admittedly Garmin isn’t strong here: they do have Spotify but no way to do Apple Music or Audible or anything, and what you can do is limited. So if I want to run or ride with music or a book my phone always comes with me. I remember when Apple Watch first let you do music from the Watch back in like 2016 and it was really cool at first, then I didn’t care and was bringing my phone on runs anyway. Since you asked about badges and motivation and whatnot: as mentioned Apple has really nice stuff, but I view it as more pedestrian oriented. Ultimately I didn’t ever feel motivated by it. Garmin seems to have tried to get into the social game, too, but I don’t know many people that use this and do gamification. They have a great badge system built more around training than anything else. That said… As another poster mentioned, I also use Strava and Strava as a social media platform is far more motivating for me. If you’re into training at all, look into it. Strava tells you about your previous times on a segment, for instance, and whether you’re getting a PR. It does Q/KOM (Queen or King of the Mountain). It can show you routes and segments in your area. It has a great interface for breaking down training data as well. Garmin is better for like overlaying cycling power with heart rate and elevation, but Strava gives you a lot of this data as well. You can feed Strava with either Apple or Garmin. At the end of the day my opinion on why to chose Garmin is if you want the training planning and tracking. If you have a goal like a race then it’s a pretty cool coach. If you have a program you’re already following and just want to track against it then it matters a lot less. The only other winning thing is depending on model you can get Garmins with incredible battery life. My Fenix 7 gets almost a month on a charge. My wife charges her Apple Watch daily. I’d probably go without a smart watch before going back to an Apple Watch because all of the cool features of an Apple Watch are lost on me.

I went from traditional watches to Apple watch to traditional watches + oura. I realised I do not need all the capabilities of the Apple watch on daily basis, so now I use it only in a gym and while running.

I have a Whoop and Oura, and neither of those seem ideal for your use case. They don't provide continuous SpO2 readings, just a single daily value for SpO2 (I believe this is averaged overnight but not 100% sure). I take multiple times daily SpO2 readings with a finger pulse oximiter and they don't correlate super great with the wearable readings; the Whoop seems to underreport much more than the Oura. Here's a plot of the last 4 months to compare, with the average of my finger readings during the day in green: [https://imgur.com/a/dOAgBcm](https://imgur.com/a/dOAgBcm)

Garmin is good for workout tracking. Probably the best. However, it’s among the worst in sleep and recovery tracking. I even bought the Index Sleep Monitor and it’s as bad as the watch. The hardware is doing its job, but the algorithm is outdated and unreliable. For sleep tracking I’d say Apple Watch is the best followed closely by Oura. Their algorithms are excellent.

I feel that. Speaking to someone who loved his Apple Watch but ended up getting an oura so I could wear my automatic watches I own.
