I've personally found that the Waves NX virtual surround function works best for my ears. Theres a couple headsets that use Waves including the Audeze Mobius and HyperX Orbit S. Everyone's ears a little different and different HRTFs work better for some than others. I'd recommend watching a tutorial on installing HeSuVi. It's a program that will let's you try out a whole bunch of different virtual surround sound HRTFs.
I had the Mobius and I really enjoyed it, but like you, it broke when it got caught on the USB cable and fell to the ground. I’ve dropped my Maxwell a couple times and I’m surprised nothing bad happened.
It’s interesting you find the DT 770 MORE detailed. Perhaps it was just easier to hear the detail was there… As someone else said, the audio engine in the game makes a big difference. For example, the Battlefield games advertise a headphone mode with built-in object oriented Spatial Audio for headphones, but I’ve always found the explosions and chaos drown out the smaller details, and generally that game favors spectacle over the tactical when it comes to audio. Meanwhile, the various “listening” perks in CoD games make it easier than real life to hear footsteps and the like. Another potential is background noise in your gaming environment. If you’re near a fan or your computer rumbles or whatever, a closed headphone like the DT 770 provides a “quieter background” from which to pick out the game sounds, where open headphones are less distorted but the game audio might be competing with real life audio. You can forget about using open headphones on an airplane, all the bass is GONE as well as any subtle nuances 😆 That said, for open headphones, I was really impressed with the latest revision of semi-open Fostex T50RP & T60RP, I think they’re on their fourth or fifth generation now. They have a good bite on their leading edge (transient attack), the only thing is they’re the most power hungry suckers and will need the volume turned up more than an HD 600 or HD 800 (even though the Fostex only have like a 64 Ω impedance, if my memory is correct… the more important spec to determine if they will be more quiet or loud is to look at a headphone’s sensitivity rating). The Sennheiser HD 600 are better headphones than the HD 560S you already have, but I think the HD 560S perform better for gaming anyway. I used to game with the Audio Technica AD700… I keep reading great things about the much newer R70x, maybe check out that special version from the Apos Audio store? I saved for years and managed to get a small house (that STILL needs work, new roof and pipes and stuff), but that also means I have a mostly quiet environment and I typically don’t need closed headphones for gaming. Doesn’t mean I don’t have a few! If you can find a Fostex TH-610 for a good price (or very similar EMU Teak), those are bass heavy but surprisingly immersive and capable headphones for gaming. Audeze Maxwell is a planar magnetic closed headphone, and it has the bonus of being wired or lossless wireless; the one I heard had a funky EQ profile activated, but I have the earlier Audeze Mobius and I think their default tuning is nice, you can change it if desired, and it’s just like the closed gaming go-to recommendation. Lastly, I have a pair of AKG K371BT that were unfortunately delivered broken… explains why they were so cheap. However, even though I have like 30 headphones, I wanted to try them out because they kept getting rave reviews for the price point you’re talking about, so I’d definitely recommend you read a few reviews on it too. Hope this helps a bit!
You’re welcome! I did read you that you said you could hear “more steps,” my curiosity is the “how?” I’ve heard the DT 770 a few times before, it’s a fine headphone but it’s not a particularly detailed one. The isolating nature of closed headphones was my first guess, the quality of different games was another guess. Perhaps the fundamental pitch/note of the footstep is near where the Beyer has a peak, with a bit of a cut in frequencies around it to make the steps stand in contrast even more? The DT 770 might be easier to drive too… do you have the 32 Ω, 80 Ω, or 250 Ω variant? Never discount the mental aspect either… if you’re tired or stressed, your brain is less able to process lots of stimuli. An aspirin or a nap (especially if it’s late at night!) could help. Oh yeah, one more closed headphone is popular right now… that new FiiO FT1 has lots of enthusiastic reviews. Anyway, I probably gave you too many ideas at this point… but after you look into these a bit, I’m curious which way you’ll be leaning?
I still have my audeze mobius .... the best headset in the world for pc.... the sound still incredible like day 1. ❤️
Can anyone compare their Maxwell experience to the Mobius? Have a Mobius from 5 years ago that objectively still sounds good, but does glitch with windows sometimes to self regulate its volume which is getting old.
I had their predecessor Mobius my 1st planar headphone but the build is so poor or im too rough, the headphone band snapped at the side, got a new replacement same issue happened.
If you can wait watch the used market for Audeze Mobius. I got mine used for 150. That's an end game gaming headset.
