I've used a redragon H510 zues-x (in white) headset for 4 years and absolutely love it. Very comfortable, inline mic and volume control, comes with some software for EQ, surround sound, and some mic effects. Very budget friendly and pretty good quality. The white still looks great as well. Some people can be susceptible to brand hierarchy and your BF miiiight have a negative perception of redragon, or just be loyal to hyperx. But these sub-200$ headsets are all generally the same - cheap, bass forward driver, passable microphone, passable build quality. Some brands just charge more, some brand charge less, but it's all pretty comparable Chinese tech and redragon does a great job at undercutting the mainstream/lazy brands. And the >$200 headsets aren't worth it at all imo. It's so much better to get a dedicated audio solution and a dedicated microphone at that point.
Combining a good mic, and good audio driver, and good build quality, with all the features you want does kind of eliminate a lot of options. Combining all these items also just drives up the cost unnecessarily, and no one wants to be a sucker. I don't at least. It also means that when one part fails, the whole thing is junk. Separating them into their own category/items increases quality and drives down cost like crazy. If you can spare a literal coffee mugs worth of space on your desk and one USB A port, grab the $15 CMTeck USB worm mic and whatever headphones/iem's you want. I would recommend the Kefine Kleans for something cheap (but they still sound great), or the Truthear Hexas for something a bit nicer (slightly better imaging and separation/stage is the biggest difference) You'll have a better mic, with the easy mute feature you want, and much better audio without a bunch of unnecessary bulk and weight. And you'll spend like half the money you would on a headset which would, again, have worse performance in at least one but probably all categories. Edit: Especially since you listen to music, I would get a nice pair of IEM's. And, honestly, the redragon H510 Zues-x might be enough for your gaming needs. It's what I use. Very comfortable, sounds more than good enough, has software for EQ/surround sound, mute button/volume on the cable
my partner and i game about 4 ft apart and he is an…enthusiastic gamer. if the issue is only hearing him, look for something noise cancelling (and maybe have a talk about your needs in shared space but idk). however, if the problem is picking him up through your mic, you’re kinda sol forevs 🫶 (unless you get your own gaming rooms, but in this economy?). i have my mic turned down quite a bit, and it’s simply inevitable. but the same goes for my voice getting picked up by his mic. so for the recs: if your goal is noise cancelling, get a set of beats studio pro. i’d never had a product with this feature until purchasing beats. i LOVE them for wanting to silence the world, but it does make your head feel funny sometimes (or maybe that’s just me idk). and then purchase a standing mic (tends to have more customizations on sound input than a headset mic i think). if your goal is to prevent him from getting picked up by your mic, i love my corsair virtuoso. but…looks like the pearl sold out. the mute button is on the bottom side of the mic. i will mute my mic when he gets REAL loud, out of respect for the fellow call members lol. it’s not noise cancelling, but it definitely dampens the external sounds. if you are looking for something a little more budget friendly, i really liked my red dragon headset (lasted almost five years, which is a long life for a headset). i had the zeus in white and pink (pink is subtle, but not screaming PINK). it’s not noise cancelling but the mute button is further down the cord (this is the only corded option presented), so it was easily accessible. hope this helps!
