Anything from the V Max series. Idk what you mean by "low trigger point" (this can mean either physically low or a low measurement for actuation distance) but if you mean an earlier actuation point than 2.0 mm, swap out the switches.

If you want something low profile, something from the K Max line, specifically the odd-numbered ones.

Keychron V3/6 Max barebones + separate silent tactile switches and shine through key caps. This is going to be over your budget, though. There's also the C1/2/3 Pro, but you have to make sure you pick the hotswappable versions of those boards.

Go wooting or keychron v max/q max series. Razer is overpriced and steelseries too. If the hall effect is really needed and don't want a wooting then keychron q he, nuphy field 75he and drunkdeer a75 exist

keychron v1/v3 max, leobog hi75, akko 5075s. My top recommendation would be monsgeek m1w v3 in that price range

I have a TKL Keychron (80ish%) and the keys are okay. I am currently looking at other keys caps to see if there is a profile that will work better. The problem is that I don't have a store around where I can go play. So I have to wait until I travel for work to find stores. The stock keys work fine. But hot swap capabi means I can change them when I want, I am not stuck with them. I agree with others that either brown would be the best option for his dual use. I initially went with reds thinking I would like the smoothness. I ended up hitting too many keys. The brown reduced that issue (in a heavy typer).

I think most of the ones catering specifically to gamers are overpriced for what you get, but you can get a really good customizable keyboard with RGB and low latency from keychron and rest easy knowing it’ll last and sound good. In that price range you can easily get a V Series (v max if you want wireless) or K series for low profile and he will be happy with it. With the money you save you can even get him a gift card to a quality keycap site if he wants shine through or similar. I would recommend silent switches if he hates noise. Gateron makes a great silent switch.

You must be looking at the low-profile boards. There are plenty of full-height boards from Keychron... Check the V Max series, you'll get the best bang for buck there.

Get a keychron v series board. They're hotswap so don't have to get a new board or solder when a switch dies and they're priced pretty reasonably considering the quality. There're also a few cheaper options on amazon depending on what layout you're looking for (Risophy 60, Kemove K87SE, Magic Refiner X87, LemoKey X1, Lemokey X3, HexGears M2) Also used ones on eBay or local marketplaces. Just don't do temu

Also recc'ing the V Max series for Keychron. You may also want to check out 96% since those are mostly full size but more condensed. Only issue is some less used keys get removed (typically scroll lock, pause, home, end, pg up, pg down). If you really need those buttons as well, then 96% won't work as well (unless you're cool with fn layers)

Gaming mechanical keyboards come with different key switches that are a lot down to preference. In short, you have "linear" (very light to press), "tactile" (light initial resistance when pressing) and "clicky" (similar to tactile but with a loud click, you love or hate it) For a mixed gaming / office keyboard I would recommend a tactile. It's a bit easier for typing and not too noisy. The switches are commonly referred as "brown" as some popular makers use that color classification. Also look for "hot-swap" boards, it means the switches can be easily replaced for another type. Many big-brand flashy gaming models don't bother to offer that unfortunately. The quality of the case will influence how noisy the keyboad is (e.g. with more dampening inside). Stuff like RGB lighting or wireless tend to be common options nowdays. The keychron V (plastic case, cheaper) and Q (aluminium, premium, like a tank) series with brown switches are excellent all-purpose choices although not maketed as gaming. They are derived in different sizes (look for a 100% for numpad) and connectivity option.

Looking at the history of this sub over the past year you'll see a heck of a lot more failures from the Q and V boards relative to the K boards. Of course, that *could* just mean Keychron is selling a lot more Q and V boards than K boards. Otherwise, the biggest difference you'll feel/hear will be coming from the difference between steel plate + tray mount and PC plate + gasket mount.

The case/housing/frame of the Q series is rigid, only the *keybed* is flexible here. On the V series, both the case and keybed are flexible. HE is a very interesting concept. There *was* a time when it was very expensive to implement, but those days have long since passed. These days, it is more expensive to build a decent physical connector (hot swap socket) than it is to build a hall effect sensor. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see HE boards take over the budget sector in a few years. But at the moment, you are really only paying for the hype. There *is* an advantage to HE switches when it comes to gaming. But here, what you are paying for is the software, not the hardware.

I see an issue here. While any of the Max keyboards have the low-latency 2.4 GHz wireless, it's single receiver only. For connecting to multiple devices seamlessly, you'd have to use Bluetooth which does have added latency and a much-reduced polling rate (90 Hz over BT versus 1000 Hz over USB or 2.4 GHz) A solution to this is using a wired connection in your office and at any computer, and keep the 2.4 GHz dongle plugged into your console or whatever computer you absolutely need wireless with
