r/pcmasterraceAre studio headphones better than gaming headphones for gaming?

Are studio headphones better for gaming? Yes. Better bang for your buck? Probably not. Like a lot of things in gaming, the more you pay, you eventually get diminishing returns. Everybody has their own line they draw on where it becomes worth it or not. Anytime something is "gaming" it's usually just marketing and not the best. Often worse. But also convenient. Like it will have headphones, mic, and sound card all in one low-ish price. But if you wanted to give Studio headphones a shot, it can be made affordable. Sennheiser HD 599 go on sale for $90-100, and they're easy to drive. 50 ohms. So you shouldn't need a DAC like you would with 150+ ohms. For a little less, \~$70 on sale, you could also go with the Audio-Technica ATH-AD500X. (48 ohms) But with studio headphones, you also need a mic. Modmic is fine, if you want that "headset experience." But I think they're overpriced for what they are. You get better audio from budget desktop mics. Something like the EPOS Gaming B20, or Fifine mics, or yeti clones, can be found for under $30 and have the smallest difference in quality with mics that cost $120+.

You could maybe try out the ATH-AD500X. I used those for FPS games a lot and have used them some for movies. Really light weight open back headphones and a very long cable. I did get some aftermarket ear-cups on ebay as well for them.

Oh a couple comment on those. They have virtually no bass, but high and mid range are great. They are also low ohms so they don't require external power which is important for the movie watching setup.

In order from top to bottom, from left to right. - a Toshiba I don't know the model. They sound close, the midrange is a bit harsh for sensitive people. - victor BE, their sound is a bit dark so I changed the silver-plated copper wire. The sound is bright, clear. But still has little bass. - this white one I modified from a Sony On ear case. The driver is from Ath on ear also not sure model. Their sound is very good. - koss ksc35 just changed the silver wire to make the sound softer. - koss ksc75 I changed the driver from sony wh xm5. The ranges are full. Lots of bass, lots of mid. Sparkling treble. This is one of my favorites in this bunch. - panasonic Hz22. The sound is extremely airy, but has little bass. - pioneer se-e03. This is a headphone without bass.  They even lack 120hz frequencies. But when wearing them and listening, the sound is like coming from hell. - a product mod by my stubbornness, a broken JVC case combined with ath ad500x 53mm driver. They sound very good. Full bass. - ath eq300m nothing special in sound. - ath eq3. Sound is also nothing special. - Jvc unknown model. They are very cheap but sound very good. But still lack bass. - Ath em9r, they cost 250$ but the sound is not commensurate. Bass is lacking, mids are harsh. High range is not much. This is a waste of money.

Planars are great. But if gaming is your main criteria, stick with dynamic drivers. Beyerdynamic 9 series (900 pro X, 990 pro, 1990 pro) Sennheiser 600 series ( hd600, 650, 660, 660s, 660s2, and including the 490pro) and 500 series ( hd560s is one of the most recommended options for gaming around here), Some of the audio technica ath-ad models. Specifically for competitive fps games, these are pretty much the best options out there at reasonable prices. Adding an amp like the Fiio k5 you mentioned is also a good idea with most of these. I personally like Sennheiser more because I listen to more music than I play video games, but I occasionally get called a cheater in r6 with my old hd600 + Fiio k11. If you don’t care about music or other media, the beyers should technically be even better.
