to give a small review of the ath 50s to appease the bot. they sound really decent for the money, they have enough crunch in the bass that you can hear it well, but does distort the louder they get. they are incredibly light. barely feels like you're holding anything in your hand. my only complaint goes the old pair is that they are too small on the ear. mine sitting right on the top of the ear which hurts after awhile

If you can't afford studio monitors or your space isn't treated for them, I highly recommend monitoring headphones. Cheapest: AKG K240s ($50, but they're "open backed," so be careful that your mic doesn't pick up any sound bleeding from them) mid-range: Sennheiser 280 pros ($70), Audio Technica ATH-m40s ($99) upper range: Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 ohm ($179) or Audio Technica ATH-m50s ($150)

Make sure you buy him a HARD case for them as well. Go with the AT- 50s. They are great. But also whatever you do go with. Make sure you can return / exchange them. Because headphones are different for everybody

r/BuyItForLifeanyone done an over ear headphones comfort comparison that isn’t just marketing fluff?

First, the photo is of on ear not over ear. I thrifted a pair of Bose quiet comforts and they are nice however I think I like my dt 770pro a little more. It's also way easier to change the pads on the dt 770 than the Bose (unless the newer model of the quiet comfort changed how they put on the pads) I also owned a pair of audio technica m50s and they are not as comfortable as the dt770 but the dt770 do not have a detachable cable so you have trade offs.

r/headphonesthe first pair of headphones that made you actually care about sound

My audio journey started with skull candy headphones in the 2000s thinking that the pinnacle of sound was the Beats by Dre. I got Christmas money in highschool but couldn’t afford the Beats so instead picked up some shire srh840 instead. That set me down a path to finding perfection. I spend the next several years trying many headphones. Grado MS1, Shure srh 940, audio technical ATH m50. I eventually settled on Grados as my favourite and my headphone journey ended with my Grado RS1i. I recently in the past 5 years got interested again and bought a pair of sennheiser HD650 from Amazon but as much as I like them, they don’t amaze me like my Grados. May move up the chain in the non Grado world. Thinking hifiman arya, Sennheiser HD800, or maybe an Audeze LCD 2. I never really broke the $500 barrier for non Grado headphones. Senn HD800 interests me because I hear they’re bright and I like treble

Audio Technica ATH-M50's but theyre a few hundred bucks. Expensive but cheaper and 10x better than beats edit:dont think they have active noise cancellation but they are closed back Edit2: they are wired unlike the xm4s. Im keen as to try xm4s now but athm50s pop off

Open and closed backs are entirely different. Open backs leak sound, but are less fatiguing and usually give you a more accurate sound. Closed don’t leak as much sound. The AT M50’s are not comfy for long periods and are not great sounding. Very hyped in the mids. They do not cover your entire ear. They are fine for tracking purposes. The DT 990 Pro is way more comfy. They are flatter in the mids, but have hyped lows and highs. I have both of those. It really depends on whether you need isolation or not. If not and you are going to be spending a lot of time using headphones, then you should get open backs. They are better for mixing as well.
