1) Make sure you buy them from a music store and get a gift receipt. It is a pretty personal thing, so the option to return, try on a few, and exchange should be given, encouraged and also expected! Honestly, I would recommend just taking them to pick out what they want.... but I get that it is nice to have a physical item to "gift" even if it gets exchanged!!!! 2) Just some clarification - by "over ear" are you saying that the cups cover his entire ear, with the padding on the outside of the ear? Or just that they are not "in ear" like a pair of Airpods are? Best Gift Options: Over Ear (enclosed around the whole ear) **-** Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT On Ear (not Airpods, but the foam sits on top of the ear) - HD25s If there isn't a preference, I would 100% go with the HD25s. Kinda an industry standard, absolute workhorses. 3) You don't want bluetooth for DJing 99% of the time (it can create latency). 4) You don't want noise cancelling. You want to hear the monitors, and the systems than do the noise cancelling change the audio and can also create latency.
i actually own those audio technica headphones, they're great for noise insulation, but they don't sound that great and aren't that comfortable because they don't sit around your ear like proper studio headphones, but rather push directly on it. I'm pretty sure they're more geared towards djing. i can tell you for a fact that both akg k240 and sennheiser hd600 sound better and are more comfortable. never tried those beyerdynamics though. if you can, i recommend picking a track that you know very well, and going around playing it on those different headphones so you have a fixed reference.
Ive owned both of these and I like the fit / repairability of the DT770s better. They fit completely around my ears whereas the m50x sit on them. You may consider how much isolation you want as others here have mentioned, an open back headphone would overall be better for mixing, but then you give up isolation. I wouldn't worry too much about curve as they are both pretty far from neutral. If you really want neutral you can apply an eq at the system level with something like Equalizer APO https://sourceforge.net/projects/equalizerapo/ Or a eq on your master in daw with a curve found online.
m50xbt for dj/travel hd600 for chilling/working
ATH-M50x's are a pretty damn good choice. I can't compare to the 7506's but I recall finding my V6's less impactful in the bass compared the the M50xBT and not quite as fun sounding overall.

I've had both, to me the beyer sound better but they stopped working in 2 weeks. Might be a one off. The AT I've had for a couple years and no issues.
These are great. I bought the bluetooth version so I can use them to listen to music from my phone on the go. 50 hours of battery life and when I am practicing dj mixing or playing piano I can go wired so I don't have to deal with latency.
I have the Bluetooth version, so I use them for mixing and for listening. They’re the best headphones I’ve ever put on my ears.
