ATH M70x here - flatter for studio use but they are both great cans. I cross reference against my studio monitors on them and tweak back and forth a little. (Focal Alpha 50s in a treated room)
AudioTechnica ATH M40x I use the M70x right now, but if you only care about FPS games the M40x is actually easier to hear things with. The M70x sounds amazing, but it has this issue where the headband breaks pretty easily. Mine already snapped, so I cannot really recommend it lol.
I have never really spent money on IEMs so I cannot say too much, but the sound always feels kind of sharp and the highs are really piercing to me so I do not like them. If I wear them for a long time my ears start to hurt and it gets annoying, and I also had a hard time telling where footsteps were coming from. We are not pro players so we do not really need IEMs anyway, and with headphones you can usually get better sound quality for cheaper.
Love my HD 25's. They can get a bit clampy around the ears after a good 2 -3 hours wearning but have a great seal on the ears and amazing sound but relatively flat sounding. I have a good in ear monitors (Linsoul KZ AS10) but find they get sweaty and painful over time when mixing for 1 hour plus. What I find myself going to the most are my Audio Technica ATH-M50X closed back headphones (if I'm not using my HD 25) as they are the most comfortable of the two. The ATH M50X are close to flat, but the one up from them, the ATH M70X, has more bass and more excitement in the highs imo. Same comfort aswell. Most closed back headphones incase the whole ear (over-ear) aswell. The HD 25's are more of an on-ear then over-ear (probably why it's a bit more clampy) Something like a closed back might be something to consider. One more type you could look at are open-back headphones. I sometimes DJ with a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO'S when I just wanna have a chilled mix and not get too hot. You'll be able to hear your environment around you and you'll get some music bleeding through. But great if you want maximum comfort, airflow and to be able to hear what's around you. But probably not a transient and bassy and existing. hope this helps :)
I use the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x for general headphone use, and the ATH-M70x for mixing.
People have been going deaf for years too. How well do the ATH-M70x block noise? These are the ones he says he uses. I don’t see a rating which tells me probably not very well at all. Other over-ear headphones like Beyerdynamic DT 770 M are rated for noise reduction and are much better choices. John Mayer isn’t someone I’d take advice from.
Also, be *real* careful with the 70x, the swivels on the earpiece break really easily and AT charges a bloody fortune to repair them and won’t just sell you the parts 😡
Bro, do you wear a pair of glasses? I have had a pair of m70-x since five years ago and I hate it for the same reason, until recently I found someone online mentioning wearing glasses messed up the low end response.
It is of course not as good as open back or near field monitors, it become reasonable
1: Pioneer se master1. These are incredibly musical headphones. No matter what people say about them, I think they're great, except that the ear cushions are difficult to replace. Their sound really brings a listening experience called "immersive*. 2: adx5000. After master1 came home. Adx5000 seems to be covered in dust. They are not inferior to m1, the sound is more technical and closer. 3: I will call them Adx4000. Because this is the product I modded from ad900x cup. With the driver of a2000x, I have tweaked the driver to give the desired sound. 4: nwm one. This is a bluetooth headset. There is a tilting driver system. I modded it into a version similar to akg k1000. One day I will introduce it to you. 5: philphone made by myself. Because I couldn't buy it, I made them myself based on Phil's idea. 6: r70x and r70xa. I modded these 2 versions into one hardcore, one soft. They These are the two headphones I wear every day and take with me on the go.
