I just had a chance to sit down with the new Audio Technica R70xa edition. They were fantastic. I own the R70x, it an offers a slightly expanded presence than the 70x’s do and provides great presence. Absolutely not worth the switch if you already have the 70x’s however.

The best overall headphones I've tried are the ATH-R70x, but I admit there are probably better things out there that are beyond my budget.

Even without knowing why, I always go back to my R70X’s too

I like ath r70x, i prefer them over my hd600 for mixing but it’s more of a preference than a technical difference.

Yeah, this is my experience as well, although it is with the r70x - if not for tracking and monitoring in a studio/live environment, I'd never wear closed backs, and even then it's that one headphone on ear, other off kind of situation.

r/headphones • Audio-Technica R50x: something that ruined closed-backs for me. ->

E-mu Teak, or Fio FT1 for bassy closed backs. Meze 105, Audio Technica 70xa, or Aune AR5000 for open headphones. The HD600 and 6XX that have been mentioned are amazing, just not for sub bass.

Just got some at that price after my AD1000Xs kicked the bucket. Hell of a deal, heavy as shit though compared to what I'm used to. Capra strap helps a bunch. I'm trying out a set of R70xas as well, and I like them, but they're almost twice the price now which I can't justify at this point.

I went from AKG K712 Pro to ATH-R70XA, I swapped for same reason as you did, really happy with these ones.

Owned the HD 560S, FT1, DT 990 Pro 600 ohm, and the AT R70xa. Both the HD 560S and the FiiO FT1 are just average in terms of soundstage in their respective categories (open/closed). Otherwise, the DT 990 Pro 600 ohm and the Audio-Technica R70xa are strong contenders, with the R70xa being particularly open-sounding, with strong imaging.

Idk Beyerdynamic are kinda over hyped. I tried few of them (990 Pro and 770) and I ended at Audio-Technica, yeah sure Beyerdynamic are more comfortable, but ATs are just more "fun" and easier to drive. I was have ATH-M40x, then ATH-R70x now I have iBasso SR3 and I still missing my ATH-R70x, top tier headphones and with warm DEC/AMP, super fun.
