I did exactly the same 3 months ago. I was sick and tired of constantly killing headphones just from daily use. From gamer-esque wired ones back in the day i'd get a year out of at most, to the wireless gamer ones that I got 15 months out of (just), to the budget ones at 30 gbp that lasted 7 months... I was so tired after 20 years of constantly paying for e-waste. Honestly they've been great so far. I didn't need a DAC either - as they're actually like 5x louder than what I had - so watch your volume :) I got the closed back DT 700 Pro X and they're grand. The good thing is with these - beyerdenamics actually sell bloody parts, so i'm hoping, this ends up being a 3 / 4 year lifespan set of headphones with occasional replacing of the earpads! One little thing I added was I had an old TRS to 3.5mm splitter cable that's maybe 5cm long. I plug that into the PC and plug the headphones into the headphone side of that. this means when i accidentally yoink them (done it a few times now) they just disconnect as opposed to applying any major strain to the headphone cable or connection. I then worried about a mic for the few times I gamed, and I didn't want to go down the typical buy a condensor mic and a XLR input to USB for that, or to buy a modmic (stupid money), so I ended up believe it or not buying a DJI mic mini on sale (2tx +1rx plus case) for like 70 gbp. Comments when I use it rarely are 10/10. plus.. i dont even notice it's there!
Can't say the same for the newer pro x lineage of beyerdynamic headphones
I had a beyerdynamic dt 700 pro x. Even tho I never faced any issues, I've seen a lot of posts on this subreddit about the headband, which is a cheap plastic, and hinges breaking. The cup's back side is also not as robust as the dt770 pro and has this stupid matte finish which picks up a lot of scratches. TLDR: Had to baby them, lots of creaking noises, eventually ended up trading those for focal elegia
That’s great. Great pair of neutral-bright headphones and it looks nice as well. What/when do you primarily use these for? It’s kind of stupid, for me at least, that the cables are attached onto some headphones. No way to replace them. Good thing that’s not a problem for the 700
I mostly use Beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X. I opted for them because they have a fairly neutral sound signature which is good for monitoring. Additionally, they are closed-back so they better isolate against room sound. My biggest complaint is I'm not a big fan of the position of the cable connector into the headphones. It's mini-XLR which is great, but the connector itself sticks out quite a bit. You might find it pokes into your shoulder or gets snagged on your clothes if you move your head around. It's a minor thing, but definitely something I wish was different. Other than that, I'm very happy with them and I do recommend them. They're a bit expensive, so if you're looking for cheaper options, I would consider the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X or Sony MDR-7506 which are very good, tried and true monitoring headphones.
I have a set of DT 700 Pro X's but have really been enjoying the Ziigaat Arete's on the iem side. Not really an "audiophile", but I love music & gaming. Both sets sound great to me.
In ear monitors will give you the best sound isolation. There are a lot of good sounding options around $100. Check out KZ and CrinEar. Another interesting option is the sennheiser ie 200. They are smaller and might be more comfortable but you have to change stock ear tips to get nice bass. There are also over ear headphones made specifically for drummers but they are a bit overpriced imo. Personally I got myself beyerdynamic dt 700 pro x. They sound good, are quite comfortable and isolate sound pretty well. Not as good as headphones with leather pads but those built up a lot of heat.
I have both these and the 700s. 700s seem a bit bassier, but I love the way the 900s feel like the sound is in the room with you. Enjoy!
The two that always come up from the conversations I've read are the HD490 for open back and the DT 700 Pro X for closed back. At least for that price point. I would also note that the FIIO FT1 comes up as sounding fantastic but it's usually about music listening. I personally prefer planar headphones so I use the Arya Stealth for open back and currently the Audeze Maxwell for closed.
