Based on 1 year's data from Feb 18, 2026 How it works
I had the 990, the 250ohms one, pretty nice but then I tried the m50 and it just clicked, I do listen and produce Neuro DnB and Tekno so I guess the 990 was just too flat for me, I think is all on taste at this point.
I got the 990 pros 250ohms with a DAC and they’re incredible after changing the EQ with angelcc, paired it with a cheap razer siren mini and it’s better than any ‘gaming’ headset u could ever get.
IMO open backed headsets make locating objects in 3D space easier for me vs. closed back. But headphones go north $ wise once you add gear like amp/dac, so here are some normal options. (No amp needed) Sennheiser HD 599 with their clip on mic - ~$165 if you find deal Price tracker included cuz you def missed out on holiday deals so you might wanna wait https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B07Q7S7247 https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0FRVVG2JQ Philips Fidelio X2 i think works with clip on mics as well A step up would be like beyerdynamic DT 990 80 Ohms, those really plushy, but IDK about mic options, you may have to get a boom/clip on but if you wanna dive deep an amped set up with beyerdynamic DT 990 250 Ohms is also option. If $150 is too much, their are a few sub $100 with mics included I can find. HyperX Cloud Series can be found pretty cheap and isnt too bad. You got a TON of options tho, so shop around.
No those are terrible https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/beyerdynamic-dt990-pro-review-headphone.19975/ You’ll completely fuck up your mixes
If you want to stick with closed-back headphones I would recommend the Sennheiser HD620s. It has full-size ear cups, so it's leaps and bounds more comfortable than MDR-7506... It also has a much more neutral sound (but not as rolled off in the highs as HD6XX/HD650.) You know how the 7506 sort of sit on your ears? The HD620s goes around them, and forms an unusually good seal... So you get even better signal-to-external-noise ratio. The only downside of HD620s is they aren't sampled in any of the major headphone calibration softwares, although I personally think they're good without EQ... However, acoustic engineer Oratory1990 has a Harman target for them here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index/list\_of\_presets/](https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index/list_of_presets/) (You'll need to check his FAQ and do some basic conversion math for those presets to work with Pro-Q 4.) \--- Have you considered open-back headphones? The DT-990 250ohm is affordable, although I can't recommend it without EQ. With EQ, though, it's a wonderful headphones. Again, you could use Oratory1990's target or SoundID Reference, Realphones 2, etc. The DT-770/880/990 are all from the same series, but don't sound the same. They all benefit from EQ although I like the DT-770 without EQ. That series of headphones comes with velour pads and they are large, going completely around the ear. I would say the DT-770/880/990 are a little more comfortable than the HD620s (like the different between really good and great), however the velour pads don't block external sound as much. (And I believe the 32ohm edition has leatherette pads but I would avoid that, the velour is part of the charm with this series... Also, you might want to get one of the newer editions instead -- the Pro 770 X or Pro 990 X -- they have the new STELLAR.45 drivers and an upgraded headband. But one of the benefits of the classic 770/990 is the headband & earpads are easily replaced.) \--- The challenge coming from MDR-7506 is you will have to learn a new sound signature. The 7506 has many critics, but once you know it well it becomes easy to mix and make decisions in. It is a bit strident, with forward upper mids. The 7506 pushes frequencies that tend to be harsh or sibilant, and that can encourage you to sort them out. I still consider the 7506 a classic and one of my favorites, but you are right about comfort. If HD620s is a 4.5 and DT-770/990 is a 5... The 7506 would be a 2 in comparison (with regard to comfort.) Most headphones are going to sound 'tame' to you after being used to the 7506... But if you spend a week or two using the new headphones regularly your ears(brain) will adjust. You will need this adjustment time with *whatever* new headphone you get, so keep that in mind.
I like these... very transparent... Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm
I actually like the DT 990 sound. I’ve just had some QC/build problems and figured I’d ask if there’s anything in the $200–$300 range that’s considered a step up in sound quality or overall quality.
The current pair I have was missing a screw that holds the headband together, which I didn’t notice at first, and recently it’s been sliding out
I do like the DT 990 sound and understand why they’re popular for gaming. I’ve just had some bad luck with QC on a couple of units, so I was curious if there’s anything generally considered a step up in sound or build quality in a similar range.
I went from the dt990pro 250ohn to the tygr300s. Never getting headphones again unless they’re byerdynmic.
I have 3 headphones that have stood the test of time. DT 770 & DT 990 both at 250 ohms. My latest one thats has similar built quality but way better sound was a the Dekoni Blue Planar magnetics. They all need a decently powerful headphone amp but sound so good.
I’ve had the 250ohm dt990 pros for years paired with a Schiit DAC/Amp. I’d highly recommend an external DAC/Amp. Well worth the investment when you have such nice headphones. Using them without it is like having a 5090 and using a 60hz monitor. I promise you won’t regret it if you buy them!
