Radiance or MDRZ1R, they make any genre smooth and enjoyable
Planars have amazing sound but they all lack bass. That's how this technology works. I have Fiio FT7 which should have good bass but still it sounds sometimes paper and not enough as I am used to dynamics. Even after more than 6 months of use i still want sometimes "different" kind of bass. Thats why i bought Focal Radiance just for chill and bass. It's all about what music are you listening and do songs have all the features that planars can provide. If you are more into hard electronic, very powerful music - planars are no go. I would suggest planars if u are into slower and less dense type of songs.
For clean clear detailed bass slam and slap the focal radiance are a clear winner if you can find them on the second hand market they discontinued a while ago or a cheaper option with a similar sweet spot are the v-moda cross fade 100M they both shine with edm but the radiance will sound astonishingly good to my ears with any music I put through them 🎧🥁🎤🎲❤️🔥
I may add my opinion, since I have currently the Focal Radiance and the ZMF Bokeh Closed and you are curious about that one. The Radiance is fast and dynamic, but the timbre always feel a bit dry, and there’s a bit of treble that bothers me around 12–13 kHz. The bass is excellent, but maybe a touch too boosted around 70–100 Hz. The Azurys is much more tonally balanced than the Radiance (and Bokeh). The Bokeh is more natural in terms of timbre and much warmer overall. With the hybrid pads, it’s even a bit too much dark past 8 kHz. The bass isn’t quite as tight as the Radiance, but it’s still bassy and delivers enough energy. The staging is much more enveloping (more depth and height) than the Radiance, and the dynamics are fairly close. It sounds both laid-back and punchy at the same time, while the Radiance is more lively and fast. Both headphones complement each other. The Bokeh is also less comfortable — my stabilized pair weighs about 606 g, which starts to feel heavy after a while.
Listened to a lot of headphones in stores, bought the ones I thought sounded the best (Focal Radiance and Focal Clear OG).
Focal Clear OG, if it's a bit loud for them then Focal Radiance, if it's really loud then Jerry Harvey JH7.
2 or 3 unless you're a multi-genre listener. Focal Radiance (warm leaning yet very detailed and fun) - HipHop/Rap/R&B HE6se V2 Modded & EQ'd (neutral yet dynamic and punchy) - Rock/Metal HE1000 Stealth (holographic and natural) - Classical/Movie and Videogame OST's I also listen to EDM, House, and Trance which sounds fantastic with all of the above. For playing video games and watching movies I use the HE1000 Stealth. I have also noticed that some headphones sound better than others within their respective genres depending on the specific track. But as a whole this is how I split my headphones apart for their use cases. I haven't tried any estat headphones but would like to the try the STAX SR-009D or even the Stax SR-X1 which is considered a great entry level known to be better than many estats that are much more expensive. I might give them a go.
I also eq the FT1 to the Focal Radiance, sounds different and quite good. I realize we're supposed to tailor eq to our individual preferences ... this process helps me do that, it provides a starting point for me. Filter / hz / gain / Q. PK / 20 / -3.1 / 0.6 PK / 93 / 1.1 / 2.0 PK / 170 / -5,3 / 1.8 PK / 240 / -0.6 / 2.0 PK / 420 / 1.4 / 1.4 PK / 3300 / 4.0 / 2.0 PK / 5200 / -12.0 / 2.0 PK / 6000 / 9.2 / 2.0
Sony MDR-Z1R is most certainly missing from that list, got mine for $1000 used. Without a doubt my favorite pair of cans. They are a good all-rounder, made for very casual listening and mainly work with the genres you mentioned, The bass is very deep and impactful, but there's still bleeding/bloat (muddy sound) in 250Hz-300Hz. Treble on the other hand might be fatiguing without EQ and I needed to get rid of their 3.5KHz peak You might want to take a look into the prices of replacement parts before considering this headphone. Another headphone that is barely talked about is the Final DX 3000 CL, elevated bass that is tighter and not as bloated as in the Z1R, but they are currently hard to find. Other suggestions would be: Meze Liric 1/2 if you want to increase the bass, and also the Meze Strada if you are more into dynamic drivers. From Focal you got the Azurys, Radiance and Stellia (still on your ballpark if you get them used). Radiance's bass is wider and slammier. The Stellia's mid-bass is tighter and direct with more kick. Focals are a good decision considering you like a neutral sound. Not sure about open backs but I know the Philphone is a good one, and the Focal Claer OG
My brother owns the Focals and he broke one his Stellia's drivers while hot swapping into the Radiance and opposite. Haven't yet gotten to try the Stellia with original drivers, Focals are decent but not my favorite. I like the my Z1R's more because their sound stage depth makes the bass feel like a shockwave coming from the driver to the earcups, especially with their wide diameter.
Headphones mostly last for a long time, besides all the mainstream consumer stuff that is usually wearing with time or bad QC. Usually you end up with swapping pads or changing a headband strap. There are headphones like the HD 800/S lasting years, and others that have proven their longevity.
There's r/AVexchange, head-fi, ebay, xianyu (aka goofish purchasing via proxy services like superbuy), yahoo auctions (purchasing via buyee), fujiya avic (japanese store) or buying locally. I had experiences with all of those, but always be cautious for scammers / payments. Usually I pay with PayPal G&S because it saved my brother after getting scammed for a Liric 1.
For a relaxed and slamming bass you'd want a closed back dynamic driver headphone. I don't know what's your budget but based on my experience, these headphones are really doing a great job at that, especially for EDM: Sony MDR-Z1R, Final DX 3000 CL, Focal Radiance. Planar magnetic headphones usually produce a slight punch but they don't move as much air as the dynamic, resulting in that same experience you get on the Edition XV. I have the Edition XS and Aeon 2 Open back, I feel the same way about the bass on them. Aeon 2 feels really identical to the Z1R in my opinion, even though their drivers are completely polar opposites of each other. So you might be wanting to look for the closed back / Noire versions as they're half of the Z1R's cost and still are really comfortable + light in weight.
