They sound nice for people looking for closed back cans. I've been using 490 Pros as my daily drivers on my home desktop since they were new and I've been very pleased with them.
So the 660s2 I have, great headphone… not the best for competitive FPS, also have the 490pro which is much better for that use case (and a lot more comfortable and cheaper) If competitive FPS or gaming really in general is what your going for and you want Sennheiser, I’d go for the 490pro, also there’s the 480pro if you want a closed back
HD490/480, if you use them for mostly gaming the 490/480 is excellent for that, quite comfortable (honestly at least for me their some of the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever had) and no cable split
Get HD 490 Pro (Open), or HD 480 Pro (Closed) if you want Sennheiser (you didn't specify budget). Can also consider the Kithara if you want it for gaming, mic, music and everything else in easy package. Because you might not used to these headphones and how they sound, you can get very disappointed. I've been using HD660S2 with Oratory EQ and iFi Zen DAC 3 daily for almost 3 years now. It's a real bliss for music and any other listening... I can't take it off. I put even on sleep often. But when I play competitive games (Naraka, Apex), OH BOY it's just trash. Very good stereo imaging, but you can't really know where were the footsteps. It gets you confused.
I noticed on a video the other day that Buster Odeholm uses the 660s2, I’m not sure if that means much to you. If you want to check out the closed back route I would strongly recommend the Sennheiser 480 Pro. I’m a mastering engineer fwiw and I found those to be very well balanced, nice and punchy, and I think would work well in the studio. Any headphone or IEM will be tricky to mix on vs actual monitors, (stereo imaging and center image is off) but there are some noteworthy people that do it. I use IEMs as a second reference- the Thieaudio Monarch MkIV. They’re only known in audiophile circles, not by engineers, but they’re an excellent reference. Very detailed and well balanced. Just my .02. Good luck!
Get the HD480 Pro instead of the HD 490 Pro for closed back (yet still a natural sound stage). Superior comfort, like another galaxy levels of comfort between the two. Audeze also has the world's worst QC, it';s a lottery whether you're getting a model without a ton of issues or not.
Sames! I’ve bought, designed and built home and car HiFi speakers and amps for decades. Total spend in the tens of thousands. I stumbled on some open back Sennheiser HD 480 Pro headphones in a secondhand shop for $50 that are rocking my world. They’ve more than doubled my hours of listening per day. If I had to replace them, I’d gladly pay $700+ for decent open backed headphones.
