DSO mentioned! My HD 58X do a good job.
agreed. my sennheiser HD 58X can be completely taken apart without tools and back together and aren't glued together, making repairs and just dropping them not a pain. paired with a standalone mic and they have lasted me a long time. The only thing needing replacing is the foam between the driver and ear, and the removable wire.
because difference of "generally" accepted good performance is right at the $200-300 level. The exceptions are known... The pair of FIIO FT1 and FT1 Pro, Philips SHP9600, Koss's 4 on ear "headphones", Grado SR60x, Sennheiser x Drop HD6xx (sale price) or even the HD58x...🤷🏻♂️ There's a reason why IEM is competitive with headphones at that under $300 price point. Price to performance...IEM usually perform better than headphones
I run HD6XX's with an external mic (a modmic turns them into a great headset). I almost exclusively use them for gaming at this point, but they're phenomenal headphones as well. The HD58X's are excellent as well and easier to drive. Both headphones are around $200 on Drop, give or take sales they have going on. I'm sure they'll have something going on for black friday.
sennheiser hd58x jubilee, with an antlion mod mic. Alternatively the antlion kimura duos come with a mod mic and are rather good iems. Desk mics take up real estate that im not interested in giving up, tend to be stupidly expensive for whatever quality, especially when getting routed through something like discord with all of its compression. Gaming headsets tend to be closed and have some pretty bad soundstaging and rough response curves. TLDR. Mod mic + Solid Openbacks or Antlion kimura duos or good iem and desk mic.
I have the Sennheiser HD58X and I never had anything bad to say about them. Ditching "gaming" headphones was a great choice
The Sennheiser x Drop HD58X has more bass than the HD600 series but open backs with stronger bass may require a jump up in price. The FiiO FT1 Pro is another open back option that you should explore based on your stated preferences.
absolutely not. i use entry level audiophile headphones (hd58x) and use them for gaming as well as music. the soundstage makes them great for gaming. im an open back person.
Not even a little, no. Buy a FiiO BTR17 or something similar and then buy the best cans on the market (whatever that is to the reader) and that might be. The DT770 are pretty cheap and are easily bested. I don't really use mine anymore, the HD58X Sennheisers just destroy them on every metric. But hey, I'm sure it sounds good, and I'm glad you're happy, but best, no.
Sony XM4s hit that sweet spot for your use case tbh. Yeah they're not gonna blow away dedicated audiophile cans but for all-day work + casual gaming they're solid If you can skip the ANC though, definitely check out some open-backs like the HD58X or DT770s - way better sound quality for the money
