I run HD6XX's with an external mic (a modmic turns them into a great headset). I almost exclusively use them for gaming at this point, but they're phenomenal headphones as well. The HD58X's are excellent as well and easier to drive. Both headphones are around $200 on Drop, give or take sales they have going on. I'm sure they'll have something going on for black friday.

I have the Sennheiser HD58X and I never had anything bad to say about them. Ditching "gaming" headphones was a great choice

The Sennheiser x Drop HD58X has more bass than the HD600 series but open backs with stronger bass may require a jump up in price. The FiiO FT1 Pro is another open back option that you should explore based on your stated preferences.

absolutely not. i use entry level audiophile headphones (hd58x) and use them for gaming as well as music. the soundstage makes them great for gaming. im an open back person.

Not even a little, no. Buy a FiiO BTR17 or something similar and then buy the best cans on the market (whatever that is to the reader) and that might be. The DT770 are pretty cheap and are easily bested. I don't really use mine anymore, the HD58X Sennheisers just destroy them on every metric. But hey, I'm sure it sounds good, and I'm glad you're happy, but best, no.

I guess that's not a great comparison, then. Better than the DT1350 and HD580, or even just as good as those, but I don't expect ER4S or Stax 009 sound out of a closed circumaural headphone.

Fun headphones are the way. Have owned lots of Sony headphones over the years, including the MDR-V6, but not the 7506 or M1. Loved the V6es when I owned them as they were vastly more resolving than the best loudspeakers I could afford - definitely a fun headphone with pronounced V or maybe a U-shape. Generally, I avoid anything that's too studio oriented as they tend to be brighter and more fatiguing to listen to for long periods. Haven't listened to the XM6 myself yet, but I have the XM4 and they're not terrible flat and you can EQ them with the Sony phone app. For my money, it would be hard to beat the Hifiman Edition XS at $270 or whatever for a good all-rounder. The Meze 99 is another good choice, albeit with closed cup design perhaps better suited to an office or noisy environment, if you want warm/fun without spending too much ($200 from Drop still?). Ultimately, it all comes down to personal preference. Speaking of Sennheiser, I prefer my 580X Jubilees to the Drop 6XX, though I think that may be a minority opinion. And I wasn't impressed with the 2020 Hifiman Sundaras, which along with the 6XX some really like. Sold the Sundaras and replaced them with the Edition XS which I really dig.

58x or hd560s if you want to stretch.... or pc38x if you want a mic

Im a big fan of the 58x. I know people often skip over them in favor of the 6xx, but the 58x is pretty incredible in its own right. Plus they are a little easier to drive due to them being 150 ohm vs the 300 ohm of the 6xx. The sensitivity, however, is almost identical (within 1dB). I use them as a reference headphone but I dont really use them that much these days.
