In that $ range, I would have to go with the Sennhesier HD6XX or a pair of reburb HD600 off the Sennheiser Outlet Store. FYI: I'm a huge Sennheiser fan just to let you know. I would also have to include the very solid Fiio FT3 in that group. I'm not really a big fan of ribbons yet so I won't even try. I also own a older pair of ATH AD900x and while it's really detailed, it lacks sub bass than modern music needs to have and also can have sibilance on some recordings. If you have a bass boost option, that might not be a problem. I've never heard a pair of the R70x, but I have never seen a bad review on one. \*\*\* As always, headphones are all about personal preferrence, get a demo or a return policy if at all possible.

Go to the Sennheiser Outlet website and get a pair of refurbished HD600 for $229 or a pair of HD650 for $279 a pair. Both of those are great enough to be your very last headphone purchase.

A pair of Sennheiser HD650's were my first introduction to real audiophile headphones. The best headphones I had prior to them were V-moda and Beats. I was impressed by the detail, but especially how guitars and female voices sounded. I learned that I needed an amp to get the most out of them, as well as a dac. So I did some research and came across JDS Labs Element Dac/Amp. At this point I got the bug and wanted to see if pricier headphones were better. Next came the Audeze LCDX. I was very disappointed on my initial listen. Then I downloaded free eq software and loaded up settings from a guy on a headphones forum and WOW! Nothing I had ever heard before had the clarity, detail, and bass these have. At this point I began to learn and understand that headphones have personality and you need to pick ones suited to what you like - both interms of how you like music to sound, and what you listen to. I have to cut this post short, but higher end Headphones ARE objectively better if you pick ones that have the type of sound you like. There are plenty of experienced reviewers who can describe the characteristics of headphones to help find what you want. In the case of the HD650 vs the LCDX - the LCDX does everything the Hd650 does, only better. Better base. Better clarity. Better detail. Better imaging, deeper and wider Soundstage etc. I finally settled on my LCDX and Hifiman HE1000 Stealth as my two primary headphones, with my HD650 as backup for them. You better believe that if I had the money there are a handful of headphones I would like to buy in the + $2000-5000 range. Same goes for amps and days. I think it's best to start cheaper but good quality, and learn how you like music to sound, and then make educated upgrades. As this process repeats you gain a better understanding of you and headphones.

The drop HD6xx are a crowd favourite for a reason and only $200. Which Audio Technica are you moving away from though? Been considering moving to the ATH-R70x

The HD6xx I think is the best value in the price range really enjoyable to listen too and very easy on the ears. The R70x, hifiman edition Xs, Sony MDR-MV1 could also be considered depending on what your preferences are and equipment.

Same when I got my HD6XX. I was switching from AKG K553 and strangely enough it felt like vocals were really muted on the 6XX. After a week of buyer's remorse the 6XX started sounding great and they've been my dailies since

Sennheiser HD598. I think I got them on offer for around £150 a good 15 years ago. They opened my eyes (ears) to how headphones could offer greater fidelity than HiFi speakers at a much much cheaper price point. I've since upgraded to the 6XX which is a clear step up for music even if not quite as comfortable. Seeing the 599SE on Amazon for £99 today makes me happy that a lot of people are going to be experiencing that same feeling for the first time.

Yeah, Hadenys is definitely an intermediate step up from something like the 6XX. I have them and like them.

If we talk about diminishing returns, you can’t really justify anything beyond the HD 6XX, but we’re all here lol

I find open back while playing instruments to be distracting, and the musicians I've had try them have agreed. So if that is going to be important I would stick with closed backs. The FT1 is a very cool choice. I find it to be a great value, but you may need to get pads and a head strap to help with the fit. Many have. Just remember to consider that in the cost. Their are a lot of option in this range, but you also can't go wrong with the tried and true sony mdr7506 either. Great for instruments and an easy daily driver for other things.

The Fosi doesn't do much to the sound other than provide more power. You might not need it for most things, but something like a dongle dac will choke out as frequencies peak and the impedance curve of the headphone gets very high. Something like Why So Serious? around 3:20 in is a decent sub bass test track that is pretty obvious when the stack falls apart. Superstition by Stevie Wonder has very clear cymbals and tambourines, that will clip and sound weird without enough amplification. Also the hd 6xx are 300ohms and really shine on OTL tube amps imo. Something like the ta-26 is a good start. lol, if you don't hear a difference between that the Fosi, you'll need to get your ears checked. Also, when auditioning new stuff; I recommend spending a week or two using only the 6xx and fosi as much as possible. Make sure you get well and used to what it can do on your head and in your environment. Then when switching to something else the changes are more obvious.

It'll mostly be about making a seal, and it looks like the Q30s have a larger ear cup so they should have a better chance at that. However for flying and over ears IMO you really need ANC. Plane noises are a thing. My dt770s are modded to have excellent passive isolation and i brought them on a flight once and it generally sucked compared to anything ANC. Perhaps a solid closed IEM? etymotics are fairly fantastic. Or a more standard option with foam tips? Although I'm not into IEMs a lot to be too specific beyond that.

It looks like it's poorly made and a risk to anything plugged into it. On the USA Amazon we have access to UGreen products which are still cheap chinese garbage, but generally have a reputation for meeting specs and being durable enough. Still, we have a lot of problems switching USB inputs at CanJams. When you plug in USB there's power, data, a handshake, all sorts of stuff going on. A DAC is not a PC made for USB fast switching. Even the best devices get annoyed with constant switching and often start needing restarts for a variety of issues. If the topping is working well for it. Great. You're lucking out. BUT, if you introduce a switcher, it might keep providing power while only switching data and a lot of DACs i've dealt with HATE that. When i can for peace of mind, I usually turn off the DAC before plugging/unplugging USB. Just food for thought.
