I have the MDR-1000x from launch period, 2017 iirc. I’ve replaced pads, headband wrap, still runs like a champ. I’m never gonna buy a new pair of ANC headphones.
Obviously XM5s have weak hinge structure in order to appease the design. Sony failed at understanding who the target it for these headphones. Just because its expensive product doesn't mean people will take care of it or expect to take care of it. But the rule is simple you put on your headphones with both hands, you take them off the same way no matter if its M5 or M4 design.
Anyway I do have M5 and they are still as brand new but I do hate that cup plastic, that thing will not wear well within few years. My favorites to this day are original 1000X, unfortunately after 10 years in use all padding finally shows cracks.
i head the same thing with the xm5's. I ordered MDR-M1's and they arrived today. Apparently they should be one of the most comfortable (especially if your head is larger than normal), I'll let you know.
The XM5's also hurt my auricle on the left. So, I'm going to be watching out for that too.
