This is something that’s been on my mind for a while, and I figured I’d put it out here because I know a lot of people are probably in the same boat I was. I learned this lesson the hard way, so if it helps even one person avoid the same mistake, I guess it was worth my time writing and posting here. For the longest time, I believed that if I just bought one really good, expensive headphone, it would take care of everything. Music, gaming, gym, travel, calls… one device to rule them all. And honestly, that idea sounds very tempting. You save money, reduce clutter, and feel like you’ve made a “smart” purchase. But the truth is… it just doesn’t work like that. No matter how many lossless codecs or hi res labels Bluetooth headphones and TWS advertise, Bluetooth is still Bluetooth. At the end, it’s lossy. And while it’s incredibly convenient, expecting it to match wired sound quality while also being gym friendly, travel ready, durable, and comfortable in every situation is asking too much from a single product. I realised this last year when I went through multiple headphones and TWS before finally settling on Sony ULT Wear. At first, I was genuinely impressed. The features were great, the bass was massive, and it felt like a proper flagship product. For a while, I thought, “Yep, this is it. I’m done.” But slowly, I realized it’s not grt for everthing, it’s not perfect. I couldn’t comfortably use it in the gym or outdoors because my ears would sweat, and there was always this anxiety because it doesn’t even have an IP rating. I avoided using it while lying down on my bed because I kept worrying about damaging it. And while the bass was fun, over time I realised that everything else felt a bit compromised. It was enjoyable, but not something I wanted to sit down and truly listen to music on for long sessions. Out of curiosity and honestly, a bit of impulse, I picked up a very cheap, entry level IEM: the Moondrop Chu 2 DSP. I didn’t expect much. I just wanted to see what the hype around IEMs was all about. And that’s where everything changed. Straight out of the box, it was okay. Nothing mind blowing. But after EQing it to my taste using the Moondrop app (which was buggy, but usable), I started noticing things I hadn’t noticed before. Instruments that had always blended into the background suddenly stood out. Small details in songs I’d been listening to for years became obvious. Vocals felt clearer, cleaner, and more intimate. It wasn’t perfect, the soundstage was limited, but for the price, it felt unreal. That was the moment I realised how much I had underestimated wired audio. Of course, the IEM wasn’t practical for everything. No IP rating, wires everywhere, not something I’d take out for walks or gym sessions. So I added a TWS to my setup for commuting, workouts, and calls. And suddenly, things just made sense. Each product had a role instead of one struggling to do everything. What really surprised me was how often I started reaching for the IEM instead of the ULT Wear. Despite being cheap and entry level, it became my go to for music listening. The expensive wireless headphone was now something I used only when I specifically needed noise cancellation, wireless convenience, or that heavy bass hit. I should also mention that I always knew about IEMs and audiophile grade wired headphones. I just avoided them because… wires. I genuinely thought the difference wouldn’t be that big. I was wrong. Once you actually sit down and listen, the clarity, separation, and detail are on a completely different level compared to Bluetooth headphones or TWS, no matter how expensive they are. Unfortunately, after a few months, my Chu 2 DSP stopped working because two connector pins broke and got stuck inside the earpiece. That was disappointing, not going to lie. But the lesson stayed with me. >So if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: don’t expect one product to do everything. Figure out what you actually want from your audio gear before spending your money. If sound quality matters to you, wired IEMs still offer unbeatable value. If convenience, calls, gym use, and outdoor listening matter more, wireless options make sense. And if you’re on a tight budget… say around ₹5000, don’t dump all of it into one Bluetooth headphone or TWS hoping it’ll cover every use case. A balanced setup with a wired IEM for serious listening and a wireless TWS for commute and all use will give you far more satisfaction in the long run. I was a fool, I made the mistake. I learned from it. Hopefully, someone reading this won’t have to.

I totally understand what you’re saying. If you go with an IEM, you’ll get much better sound quality for the price, but you’ll miss out on wireless convenience. Also, if the IEM cable doesn’t have an inline mic, you won’t be able to take calls easily. On top of that, IEMs don’t have an IP rating, so outdoor or gym use isn’t ideal, and being wired can feel inconvenient when you’re on the move. Since your overall budget is around 3k, if I were in your place, I’d go for something like the GK Kunten Type-C variant along with a TWS like the Realme T310. That way, you get the best of both worlds. You can enjoy proper sound quality when you want to listen seriously, and still have a wireless option for calls, commuting, and daily convenience. This setup also makes more sense long term because you’re not forcing one product to do everything. P.S. I have just read that the above mentioned are good options, personally I don't have own them and have never tried them, so I don't have a first hand experience of the 2 audio products. So, please do research more about these two on subs like r/headphonesindia & r/iemlndia, talk to people who own these audio gears and then lock your purchase. I have Tangzu Waner SG 2 Jade Dragon Edition, it's a vocal bliss but it's not that versatile as it lacks bass, the newly launched Red Lion edition has bass and is more versatile it seems but u shouldn't go for these as this alone will cost u around 2.3k (type c version with mic) and u will miss out on wireless convenience that u would get from a TWS. So, do more research about GK Kunten + Realme T310 setup.

The Xm5 and Xm6 have a really good microphone. The Ult Wear does too, but it has an extra bass sound signature that not everyone loves.

ANC can be a bit of a hit and miss on dogs and kids. Sony Ult is an extra bass headphone, but it does have good ANC. Sony XM4 or XM5 are a bit better. Bose QC is quite good too . I use the Soundcore Space 1. With music on low it reduces machine noises by 70 % & voices from TV by 50%. The DHRME YouTube channel grades ANC. Space 1 is grade B as is Sony 720. XM4 or XM5 QC are tier A with Ult about a A-. Playing music like jazz or classical on low helps a lot.

Sony ULT Wear has ANC on par with the XM5, super comfortable, transparency mode is very good, and sound profile is quite good for music enjoyment as long as you don’t use the extra bass modes. It’s already bass-forward sound signature without those modes, but I think done pretty well for the stock sound. Bought some Sony WH-900s for $120 5 years ago and they’re quite good, I travel with them regularly and they haven’t given me any issues, noise canceling works pretty well. Not an audiophile so I can’t speak to sound quality really but they bump and sound good to me, I’m satisfied with the purchase.
