I have the 1060, used off FB marketplace,is my second projector, and I love it. It’s been a good reliable unit, used for Xbox and sports. I get lights and bulb housing off AliExpress for about $15, lasting anywhere from 500 to 700+ right now for my second bulb. I don’t know anything about the 3800. But used, for $400, seems a little high to cheapskate me. See if you can get the, to knock off a bit more.

Decent deal. Not very good contrast on the 1060, but plenty bright enough and should be a good experience.

They're both great projectors in their respective classes. The 3800 is 4k, has much better contrast and input lag, lens shift, 3D, and is quieter in Eco (both of these are so bright, you probably won't ever have to leave Eco). It's also a chonker compared to the 1060 at around 15 pounds and physically around twice the size. Re: curtains, I would just bite the bullet and get blackouts. Deconova makes some very affordable ones.

Thanks for the review. I currently have an Epson HD1060, and outside of having an extremely noisy fan (for some reason mounting it upside down and telling the settings to invert the image causes the fan to run high), it does ok and nobody has ever complained about the crappy contrast or image quality because the novelty of having a 130” viewable area more than makes up for it. But I do thinking about making the most of the space and upgrading when watching a dark movie. I’ve thought about splurging on the Sony xw5000es - I thought it looked amazing in a store demo, but it’s good to hear I might not have to go crazy to get an enormous gain.

I have the Epson 880 and 1080.  They're both fantastic projector and some of the best values you can possibly get, especially in the 200 - $250 range, which is phenomenal value.  1060 is, as I understand it, similar to between the 880 and 1080 so I would absolutely recommend it.

epson 1060 or 1080 can be found used and refurbished and will project an extremely satisfying 1080P image.

The previous homeowner of my house painted a border and painted the inside with Valspar "cinema screen" - I have a Epson HomeCinema 1060 projecting onto it.

Agree re: price. We got our other 1060 for $275 a few years ago off FB marketplace and it came with the mount and an HDMI audio extractor...it would definitely hurt spending $150 more for the same projector and fewer add-ons

I would pay the extra money for the 3800. The 1060 is an entry level projector that weighs about 6 pounds and uses a 210 watt bulb. The 3800 is mid level and weighs about 15 pounds and uses a 245 watt bulb. You will have better contrast and more color saturation with the 3800. Assuming you keep the projector for several years, there isn't much difference in costs per year.

Great deal. I have a 3800 in my home theater but have a 1060 for outdoor usage, primarily for the side of a building at the bar I manage. I actually have two 1060s in case one dies on me. The throw on the 1060 is a bit shorter. Perfect for what I'm using it for. https://preview.redd.it/r2zd4hwrnw8f1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a047de06b62109a5aec83e96075d0d13ff6f811

The Epson hc 880, 1060, and 1080 are wonderful little light cannons and great quality for value. If I find one at that price I'm buying it for a secondary or movable protector They still won't compete with the sun but will work well at night/ late evening and they are physically small and easy to move

Epson sells certified refurbished projectors on eBay. I got a cinema home 1080p projector for super cheap. It’s worked flawlessly and I absolutely love it.

I think you have the right instincts here A 4k projector will do the trick. Heck I have a 1080p Epson I picked up open box and a denon avr that can do 7.1. No atmos. And it sounds and looks amazing So nowadays an atmos capable receiver and 4k projector ( even just led ). Will look and sound amazing Just need a few small extra back speakers if and when you decide to use all the extra channels

I don’t have a 4k tv even. I will probably get one soon But I am really impressed with how good even an 1080p Epson can project at 110” image that is totally cinematic So I think any 4 k Epson will be totally good I feed it an Apple TV I have a marantz cinema 70 which is their lowest powered one and use an extra 2 channel amp I have to power fronts. That room looks pretty big so I would go with something cinema 50 and still have the option to add extra power later.

I had a 1080p Epson before it that was really good but this one is super crisp, and there are some calibration settings online that take it to another level. Not sure what you mean by image rendering but the keystone adjustments worked really well when I had to use them. I upgraded to a $2500 JVC 4K projector because it was slightly brighter for my golf simulator but to be honest it’s better but not $1500 better so the Viewsonic holds its own pretty well. I told some guy on here to buy one because he was looking for a cheap 4k projector and he ended up doing it and was blown away by the quality.

with cheap 100" 4k LED's available (walmart has a 98" Samsung for 1997 right now, costco has 98" TCL for 1599), maybe look at those before spending over $2k for a projector. Unless your screen is bigger than that, then a projector still the way to go since budget TV's max out at 100" right now (another couple years and you'll probably see 120" for $2k). Redoing my basement this is my dilemma - will stick with my 1080p Epson until the price comes down for 120"

Probably something second hand? I recently picked up quite nice Epson 1080p projector for 160€. Not really portable, but does it's job. You could try to look for units retired or being replaced from business use areas to find cheap projector that has high light output. It won't be too terrific for movies as those projectors are designed for maximum clarity in lit room, but it should still be decent.

If that's the case, see if you can look at an Epson 1080, maybe refurbished or open-box. It will be a good starting point and its retail price is around $500 US. The Epson 8350 (my first ever projector) is also a good option. They have been out of production for awhile but they can be had for $250 or less. Only down side is they are larger than that Optoma or the 1080.

I love my 1080 Epson projector. Quality seems plenty good for me, and I strongly prefer the experience of watching it over my 4k TV. Not sure of the purpose of OP's post, but my enjoyment factor is in no way influenced by your opinions.

Your previous projector only had 1000ANSI lumens not bright enough. I'd say at least 2500-4200 is perfect for daytime viewing. If you pair it with a grey screen even the cheap cloth ones it will improve contrast an reduce the light washout you get in the day. There are also paint mixes you can paint on your wall. For $1100 on Amazon you can get a new Epson 2350 with 4k uhd/pixel shifting 2800ANSI lumens. The Epson 1080 is a decent option for $700 at 1080p 3400ANSI lumens. I have 4 Epson projectors the home cinema 3100 at 2600 ANSI lumens, the 696ui at 3800 ANSI lumens, the 2247u at 4200 ANSI lumens and the LS650 at 3600 ANSI lumens. All bright enough and I have them all in eco mode.
